There was a big fat warning text on the game's steam page. I don't see the problem. Buying games that are still under development is a risk. Sometimes it pays off, sometimes it doesn't. But you have nobody to blame other than yourself if you're mad now. So because it's an early release your not allowed to be unhappy with progress? Rocket put out a development road map which seems like a promise. KSP is a pre release done properly. Fairly steady progress in all areas of a game built from nothing with much much smaller dev team. Meanwhile DayZ was close to being finished as a mod it just needed touching up. 8 months later it's still worse than the vanilla. Last patch they added sharpening sticks and making fires. If anything the standalone has only gone backwards. What exactly is better about DayZ the modded version for arma2 ? The only thing I really would need at this point is a reliable vehicle so traveling is easier....At this point I hate to say it but I hate playing a running simulator... I love this game but I really want vehicles...should I just play the arma 2 mod? Is it that much better? IMO yes. You have vehicles, base building both modular and other styles and shit loads of servers with tons of different game styles. You can play servers like Namalsk where it's more about survival or you can do Overpoch that is almost GTA with zombies.
Base building imo leads to clans becoming more rooted and allows for more interesting dynamics between players. If you know where someone has a base it becomes 1000x easier to start a war with them/get payback/whatever when you know where they will be. Base building alone makes epoch vastly better than the stand alone. We're currently built on a castle, we walled in the gaps in the existing walls and put up a new structure around the base for a garage. We have a few other smaller bases but it's fun as hell when your being sieged by another clan and you need to call in your allies to back up.
Don't pay full price though I would wait for a sale. And make sure you can find a group of people to play with. Even if it's just you and 2 other people it makes it 1000x better.

I play epoch all the time and it has everything I could ever want from DayZ. I can build amazing bases, shit loads of action from AI missions both dynamic and static and there are alliances between clans and massive unscripted clan wars.
Meanwhile the stand alone is a steaming pile of shit. Somehow it went backwards from the mods. Even Origins was 1000x better than the stand alone its a total joke.
It's like a fucking fashion game. All they release are shitty new skins. I saw a post on reddit about the "new fall line of clothing". That sure makes up for having 2 guns and a glitcher and easier to hack version of a fucking mod >.> Meanwhile vehicles are no where in sight, crafting is basically never going to happen at this point. GG bohemian you got my $20 but it won't happen again....... /rant Yeah. I also think enough is enough. These rants are boring as shit. This is the same game, mind you, that the developers specifically told people NOT to buy because it is nowhere near ready. The reason you can buy it at all is because there are thousands upon thousands of people who disagrees with you. Yet you buy an unfinished game, expect it to be polished, then go on a forum to rant about how the game isn't finished. Keep drinking the kool aid. I wouldn't be bitching if anything meaningful had been added since they released it. Still no vehicles, still easy as fuck to hack, and rocket is already bailing and no base building in sight. I bought KSP on early access and they have not been sitting twiddling there thumbs. I have played the game for less than a year and an incredible amount of progress has been made with a career mode being introduced with budgets, science, reputation, and contracts not mention all the optimization. Meanwhile DayZ standalone is still worse somehow than vanilla dayz mod maybe even worse than Warz... But with even rocket ditching the product I'm sure it's such a good sign right? I'm going to be pretty upset if DayZ doesn't move forward, it has so much potential....people really hack a lot on DayZ though? There was a rash of hacked infinite magazines, there is still some duping. I haven't actually seen a hacker yet. Battle-eye is banning across Arma 2 to Arma 3 now so get caught on one, get banned from everything. Also DayZ is moving forward right now, just people that complain about it not moving forward are stuck in their own confirmation bias, and tend to cherry pick a lot. And several people almost seem to be mad that people somehow enjoy the game. This is pretty much what the last two pages have boiled down to. Someone hating the game, someone else responding saying they don't, and the first poster hating on poster nr 2 simply because he's liking it. Seriously, go through the last couple of pages, look at all the posts with personal attacks and name calling, and see what they all have in common: They don't like this game. Who is name calling? People are mad about how slow the development has been. 8 months after the release and nothing done. They haven't even kept up with their road map. Just because it's an alpha doesn't mean it gets to sit and stagnate like it has. That's pretty understandable IMO. I said read through the last couple of pages for a reason..not for you to guess otherwise. Are you going to address people are saying or just cry about non existent name calling?

Is there a radar / map , easier way to figure out where you are on the Arma 2 mod?

Yeah you can access the map/compass at the press of a button, without having to equipe either. In some servers your position will be shown, most of the time you have to find where you are. Think there's also a gps in the mod.

Is the map / showing position on the certain server on the DayZ standalone or on the mod for arma2?

You can use a easy trick to navigate if you hold shift and left click on the map it will make a way point which you can see when your outside the map with a distance in meters.
You can use this to find yourself on the map by checking if the way point is North/South East/West of your location and home in where you are by working closer and closer.

Yes, mod only afaik.
Theres that, or you just become a pro at orientation by just playing it with like a map on a second screen. Even the ingame map is detailed enough to actually learn orientation, so I'd say that's the best option, as you learn a skill that can be used IRL :D

It didn't work when I've tried it on hardcore just like it was in dayz mod. http://www.reddit.com/r/dayz/comments/2bz5mx/728_047_experimental_unofficial_changelog/

So as a complete newbie... Is this game a MMORPG like WoW where there is only one "world" and your character is saved or is it like "counter strike" where every time you log in you start over? What happens when you die etc? I couldn't find any good information.
Good option to screw around as two survivalists with wife, casually about 10-15 hours per week?

The game is not an MMORPG in that, there is not a large quantity of players per server. At most you will typically 40 in a single server with a relatively large area (will take quite some time to explore the area). You will not run into many people which can be a good thing since well, people will most likely murder you.
There is supposed to be persistence so when you change server, you should keep your gear. Sometimes (since game is still in development), the servers lose connection to hive so you just change server until you have gear back. When you die, you lose all your gear. You can loot bodies but they do vanish after a period of time.
The game is essentially sandbox; you choose how to play (go around murdering, just trying to survive, make friends, etc.). You will spend a lot of the time in this game if you play mostly because there is a lot of running. It is relatively slow paced until well, you meet people. At that point, things can go from boring (in the sense of no action) to absolutely chaos.
My suggestion is go watch people play DayZ to get an idea if it is your sort of game. One person I tend to follow is Goldy

Can also look on twitch for streamers.

I was talking to some TL people about this, and wondered if I should mention it in this thread. I held off since I didn't want to spread false information, but it seems like there might be more to this...sad....

The DayZ Devs stated nearly year ago that they would be increasing the price. Not sure why people are so up in arms about it when this information was out many many months ago. Like all Bohemia games, they start off at a massively reduced price during alpha then get increased the closer the game gets to release.

I dont disagree. But no matter the intentions, increasing the price of a product and then put it on sale is illegal in most countries, and can be seen as trying to trick the customer. They should have waited to increase the price until after the sale.
