I don't know who all here has heard of Warsow, but this game is EXTREMELY sweet and it's free. For those of you who are familiar deathmatch games like QuakeWorld, Quake 2, Quake 3, Quake 4, PainKiller, Unreal Tournament 2003, Unreal Tournament 2004, and Quake 3: CPMA, you're probably going to enjoy Warsow quite a bit.
http://www.warsow.net is currently down, but thanks to Google's amazing Cache feature, I was able to obtain the download link to the installation .zip. Here it is:
http://ftp.club-internet.fr/pub/games/nofrag/warsow/warsow_0.12_win32.zip
Simply extract the contents of the .zip to a folder of your choice, like "C:\Warsow\", and load Warsow.exe
Also, included in the package is a server browser, located in the Warsow directory, named WSWBrowser.bat. This is what you'll want to use to find servers that you ping well to.
I'm currently in the server 69.118.140.152:28000 so if you respond quickly enough you might be able to catch a few games with me before I head out.
To join a server, simply type "connect ip: port" in console, so if you wanted to join the server I was in, you'd type "connect 69.118.140.152:28000". To bring down the console, simply press the ` button on your keyboard.
If anyone has any questions or anything please let me know and I'll do what I can to answer them.
Oh yeah, and for anyone wanting to see some high level Warsow gaming, there was a tournament recently that was won by Vo0 (the 2nd place CPL World Tour PainKiller player) and he released the demo package of each game he played. To watch his demos (demos=FPS replays), simply download the following RAR archive and extract the contents to the demos folder located in your basewsw folder inside your Warsow folder. (sorry the TL.net forum code wouldn't let me type it normally with folders separated by backward slashes), and then load Warsow.exe, click on "Demos", and choose which demo you'd like to view.
The RAR archive containing his demos can be found here: http://www.vo0.nl/files/Excellocup_demos_Vo0.rar
Enjoy!
The following people are looking for people to play against. Given enough people, we might want to start a little mini-tournament here at TL.net. I'm curious to see if anyone here is as crazy at deathmatch games as I am.
If you want to be added to the list - just state so.

i played warsow in one of the very early alphas, where you didn't even have a dash button. but i agree, its very nice.
in the other forum i tend to post one coder and 2 mappers of the project are also active members, so we get first hand info on new maps/releases.
/edit: after they introduced the dash function, i gave up playing as the movent grew to complex for me. its just to fast, to open ... holy crap you can do stuff with this ...
|
Yeah it's pretty crazy, but the implementation of the dash function allows for so much more control of your movement. I mean, to me, this is pretty unprecedented for any FPS game so far - that is - being able to move so perfectly in whichever way you want. You can hop around, go to pick up an item that's in it's own corner, and then turn around and keep jumping without losing momentum. It's really, really nice. I just hope more people get into it and that it becomes bigger, because the current medium for FPS dueling (Quake 4) is just plain fucking terrible.
|
thats sounds awfully like painkiller;)
|
I have been playing it for a couple of days and all I can say is that it rocks. Thx for the vo0 demo links his movement as allways is insane .
|
I downloaded this a lil while back, couldnt find anybody to play with. For those of you interested but too lazy to check it out, one of the selling points is the game is cel-shaded, and you can jump off walls.
|
so how good does your comp have to be to run this =x
|
well it's based on the q2 engine i think.. probably anything around 1ghz would run it fine
|
Hmm I have a huge problem with the setup. I cant look around or strafe when using backpedal. Really annoying and makes it impossible for me to even play.
|
"thats sounds awfully like painkiller"
Heh, yeah. If you watch those Vo0 demos you'll notice exactly what I did: that he moves around a lot like he did when he played PainKiller. He does this thing (that I've started to do as well) where he does a 180 in mid-jump and then holds down space so that he immediately shoots in the opposite direction without losing momentum. The only game I can think of that's done that kind of movement before is PainKiller.
"so how good does your comp have to be to run this =x"
Not very good at all. You can turn down the graphics a lot inside the menu, and you can also use commands like r_picmip 5 to make things a lot faster. I have a GeForce 7800 GT and I have my stuff running on really low quality not because I'm worried in the least about not getting maximum fps, but because everyone does this in deathmatch games so they can better see their opponent.
"Hmm I have a huge problem with the setup. I cant look around or strafe when using backpedal. Really annoying and makes it impossible for me to even play."
Can you explain further please? Possibly look around on Google for something similar to this?

Maybe we can setup a TL.net game on this later.

Can you explain further please? Possibly look around on Google for something similar to this? As I started (and stopped) to play fps in the 90's I use ,. for strafe and - for jump ect as the old standard default keys for most games at the time. Due to that I use alt+gr (displayed as shift at the settings) as back. I'm used to circlestrafe and backing while playng but I can only back then turn/strafe ect. I've got the same problem in counterstrike.
|
Downloaded it tonight and played a game with bots, still trying to figure it out a bit more I'll be playing some more tomorrow though, we need to get a game going
|
Kinda weird. As far as i know, there was no single player =(

for flawless performance i recommend: cpu: 1 to 1.2ghz ram: 256mb ddr (be sure to close other apps ...) gfx card: gf3ti500 or above (gf4mx will be to low .. my old gf4 4200 ti can play it damn fine)
with this setup you should get 125fps in duel situations at all times. but for tdm (don't know if its allready supportet) you will need 1.6ghz or above and even maybe additional ram to maintain >100fps at all time.

"Sounds like GunZ + Quake II to me"
GunZ is a terribly shitty game, and just because it's based on Quake 2's engine doesn't mean it's all that similar to Quake 2. This game is most similar to Quake 3: CPMA (the movement is nearly identical) as well as the gameplay style (mega health respawns 20 seconds after it dies).
"Kinda weird. As far as i know, there was no single player =("
Yeah there's no single player. You just play against bots on LAN or you can look for servers to play against people on.
"As I started (and stopped) to play fps in the 90's I use ,. for strafe and - for jump ect as the old standard default keys for most games at the time. Wow. I can't believe you use those keys for movement. I've heard of people that used to play with really fucked up keys, and they had to practice for a few days before they got used to the now standard ASDW style. I'm afraid you're on your own for this one - you can search around forums and whatnot for a solution or you can try to get used to the normal way. For the record, the people who tried to get used to the normal style haven't regretted it and were very comfortable after the initial frustration.

Should we have our own little TL tourney on warsow?
|
It's fun, I played it in 0.08 and 0.1. But it's inferior to cpma I can play with you if you want and ESDF FTW.

ESDF is Vo0 style IIRC
I still like ASDW better

I went to ESDF because it has more buttons around than WASD. Now it feels normal.

"I went to ESDF because it has more buttons around than WASD. Now it feels normal."
Yeah I tried out ESDF too but...I know this is going to sound weird...my wrist started hurting. I don't know what the deal was, maybe it was the weapon hotkeys I was using around them, but my wrist and fingers were really starting to hurt. I switched back to ASDW and have been feeling fine since. IMO, though, ESDF does have more keys and is thus a bit of a better layout. WHAT ABOUT RDFG, THOUGH? More pinky keys - which means less taking your movement fingers off their keys.
"Care to explain why? :S"
It was just...bad. I saw a demo of high level competitive play and it was really lame. They'd run around in a circle switching from sword to gun over and over and over and shooting occasionally. It was nothing more than that at all, and it was just really lame to watch. The whole walking on walls function is pretty neat I guess but I just never liked the game much at all. When you hit somoene, it never really felt right like you were hitting them well, and overall the game was just bad. I uninstalled it pretty quickly so I can't think of any other reasons as to why I didn't like it at the moment. :|

Ah but Milktoast, the switch thing you saw actually has a point. It's a korean game so naturally the koreans are.. unnaturally good at it Anyway, I never played it much BUT I did try to learn some of the stuff.. Anyway, you change weapons around so that you can move and shoot at the same time without losing speed or something? Can't remember exactly.
Anyway, I remember watching some good korean player's demos; one where he showed different techniques and one where he used them to win 1 vs 5 or something lol. Was kinda art even tho he was playing lower level guys IIRC.

Maybe the replay you saw was sucky.
But yes, you must do all that stuff to stay alive, just like you bunny hop in natural selection or you die, or you use bugs in Quake II.
Those change from gun to sword, is also a bug, it allow you to minimize the time you are shotting and not coevring with a sword.
Next time when you state something try to be informed. :/

There's probably a console setting, but also, in the options under controller (IIRC) there's a mouse speed setting.

First of all, being able to beat CS kids at Quake is hardly an accomplishment at ALL. AT ALL. If you've played Quake for more than a week and you can't manage to beat a CS kid you would have to be a quadriplegic. It's beyond easy. Btw, I've beaten people who've been pretty good at other deathmatch and Quake games on Quake 1 by scores of 51 to -2 easily. Any time you play someone on a deathmatch game who doesn't have much experience with that game's movement/weapons/maps, you can pretty much guarantee you're going to destroy them. It's nothing to brag about, really.
Now, there's a reason that 99% of all the top players for all FPS games (I'm only saying 99% because I've never even heard of a top player using oldschool , . for strafing, but I'm going to assume that there might be a few who do) use the ASDW style. It's because the ASDW format is best. (ASDW meaning ring finger on A, middle on W and S, and pointer on D, and this format also applies to other configs like ESDF, RDFG, etc.).
What you're probably going to have to do is get a program called AutoHotKey and make a script that rebinds the keys on your keyboard that you use for strafing to ASDW so that you can still play with your weird strafing format without having to deal with any problems ingame. I can't be arsed to figure all this out for you, so if you want to play Warsow you'll have to do a little research by yourself.
As for changing the sensitivity ingame, there is indeed a section of the menu that allows you to change the sensitivity, but you can also do it with the console command "sensitivity (number here)".

I've beaten q2 players in warsow (30:-1) but I'm sure they can rape me in q2, so nothing to brag about. /sensitivity /m_pitch (vertical) /m_yaw (horiz) /m_accel /m_filter Also I have my pinky on shift/ctrl and RDFG is too much pinky stretching.

for those of you who cannot find any games, you cannot find games from the warsow exe game.
it is kinda like the free version of age of empires.
you open the wswbrowser file, the ms dos batch file. it will open up a list that shows servers which you can click on and play.
enjoy.

you cant beat some "cs-kid" on quake1
ok, they are no-skill or whatever
but they dont fucking know the maps...
after 4years of practice you should beat a pro-gamer on 815 if he didnt know it and only played luna.. (815=game A, luna=game B)
qtf=quake team fortress?
ps does anyone know a game with playstyle similar to half-life 1 deathmatch?

I'm going to bump this rather than start a new thread, merely to say that this game is fucking awesome and completely addicting. It has such a steep learning curve, and it's so satisfying to start winning/placing well in games because you can use all of the movement shit (bunny hop, strafe jump, walljump, etc.) effectively.
Does anyone on TL still play? Maybe we could get a TL server set up or something :D
(I can only play on school computers or I'd totally set one up myself, but I have no access to the network for port forwarding purposes)
|
I played Warsow up until the last update that started crashing under 64-bit Vista. Then Quake Live came out and I didn't see the point in trying to fix it.
I will tell you something thou. IMO Warsow is THE best competitive FPS out there. I like the movement and the feel of the guns much more than in Quake and the visual style is pure win.
Too bad nobody really gave it a chance in any leagues. The game is faster and is a lot easier for new players to jump in and understand what is going on plus it's free and not browser based.
DM games are on the decline. It's all about camping and sticky grenades no in FPShooters and Quake players will play Quake no matter what comes along.
Fun fact. In Japan Warsow used to have a pretty decent community. I wonder if it's still active...

Version 1.0 just came out. Im gonna give it another go cos warsow 2.1-3.1 was prolly the best gaming of my life.
