Introduction

Old School RuneScape - or OSRS for short - is an old version of RuneScape. The version of RuneScape used was from a backup of the game as it was in August 2007.

This Old School RuneScape service was released on 22nd of February 2013. This was following a poll where players voted if they wish to see the return of the old version.

The poll was up from 15th February 2013 and finished at 00:00 GMT 1st March 2013. Enough votes were cast to reach the first level of the service within 24 hours of the poll being launched, and the final vote count was 449,351.

      Full FAQ available here.
These Old School servers represent the game as it was in August 2007. They are a completely fresh start, with no stats, items, etc. being carried over.

How to play

  • You will need a Runescape account with a membership.
  • Download and install the client and follow this guide to access the Old School servers with it. You can also use the web client (requires browser with java enabled).

Jagex has stated there will be no additional fees for at least 6 months. Should memberships decline it's possible they will charge an additional $5 (monthly) to continue playing on the Old School servers. This seems unlikely, but only time will tell.

Newest: F2P Content Restricted Worlds
Blog written by Mod Mat K on 12th April 2013

So, the second content poll has now finished with over 75,000 of you taking part. The biggest and one of the most time consuming updates will be bringing back F2P style worlds. These F2P style worlds will only be accessible by members but are limited so that the skills, items and areas act as a F2P world. This offers a whole host of opportunities for the community.

The biggest opportunity is going to be for the Pk community. Do you remember the days of hanging out just north of Varrock waiting to jump over the ditch and pumelling someone to death? You will soon be able to do that in a F2P environment.

Of course many of you will be asking what difference does it make whether they PK in a F2P environment or a members environment? The difference is that in F2P you do not have the range of weapons, armour and equipment that members have. This means that the skill involved in PKing becomes more important as the armour and equipment two opponents have is often the same. It is no longer who has the best set up, but who knows when to pray, when to swap weapons and when to eat.

The community which will most keenly benefit from the F2P environment will be the clans. On top of all the skills they have to show as PKers, they will also have to be organised to be successful. The clan that can focus on one enemy, tank when they need to and return quickest will hold the field. Soon we hope to see battles like this happening.

So, when can you expect to see FTP worlds and what will we do when you get them?

We hope to have these worlds in place in around a month’s time, and shortly after that we will be announcing details of the Old School PVP competition. So, get your rune sets and your strength pots ready, F2P war is coming to Old School.

Thanks,

Mod Mat K

No as the votes did not reach 750k.

Also I'd put Tip.it in the useful links I feel RuneHQ is lacking compared to them.

We don't know. If these servers do well enough, they could be added. I think that would be a few months at the least though.

I've decided I wanted tot ry it for atleast one month. It's fun once again! But probably not going to pay 10+ Euro's a month for this. Probably not even the 7 for Membership. Just not worth it.

So... they ruined the game, and are now re-releasing it with additional membership fees and recycling the old content updates? What the hell?

I would love to play this again, but there's no way that it's worth it. It's just another way to squeeze more money out of the remaining players...
After all this time, I still haven't figured out the correlation between sexual orientation and beating an unprepared opponent. Are homosexuals the next koreans? Many players seem to think it's an unfair advantage. - pandaburn

Honestly, I don't blame you for saying that. Jagex messed up big time and this is their way of saying "sorry". I still have a bad taste for them but it is slowly going away as I keep playing. 7.95/month may not seem worth it for the majority of people who used to play and I do wish that they end up releasing F2P servers in the near future as I believe it would bring the mass amount of people back, even there to give it a try would be great.

Also, what I love about this reinstatement of 07scape, is the fact that the community is 100% positive on making this game how it should be with out all the unnecessary updates. We've seen the future and we know what will happen if so or so will pass as an update and since jagex is giving us a chance to vote for which updates we want (with a couple of restrictions of who can vote or not), the community has full power.

I was first skeptic when I saw this posted and waiting 2 weeks until i finally gave it a shot and I have to say I do regret it waiting that long to join back in. The fact of being on the nostalgia train itself feels great and I see myself playing how I used to back in the day. I completely understand that the fee is ridiculous but all I ask is that if you want that old runescape feel that you felt as a kid then you should at least try one month of it. If you don't like then simply cancel your subscription. If you do like it and just don't want to pay the fee then that it alright with me. As long as you tried, all I ask for anyone is to give it one month shot let your voice be heard and hopefully we can get F2P servers back to those who can't simply afford or just don't see the price tag for it worth it just yet, but during your one month try let your voice be heard on the forums and let jagex know your feelings about the game.

I am completely positive about this and am very curious to see which direction it will go. The more support that comes of this the better it will be.

I actually stopped playing this a long time ago too and the 07 servers brought me back for a month =P it's fun to try, making a new account and playing just for nostalgia has been pretty good times so far. Working on my Slayer on a new account, doing most of my own fishing and smithing of armor and stuff too, it's pretty chill... helps that I'm super sick and I don't want to play anything stressful for a few days. Add me ingame, my name is klan kaos if you want to chat, I'm hanging out alone in TL cc right meow so come say hi lol

Lol i love this thread

Such hype a while back for these servers, then everyone gets on them and realises

"Oh wait...nope, nostalgic rose tinted glasses moment, im out bb"

And it dies as quickly as it rose. Im glad everyone realised what a steaming pile of shit this is nowadays, its bad even for browser games.

I loved the touch of the OP quitting too

TL users are so old school. The majority thinks the game was best in 06/07. The game is not going to die any time soon, there's still a lot of people actively playing it.

A lot of things are back, they put the GE in by popular demand, membership bonds are spreading to OSRS as well, and most importantly the game is becoming free-to-play in three days, February 19th.

Feels like this thread could have a resurgence because of it.

RSClassic seems too far back to have enough players for them to have the f2p/bond system, but 2007scape has enough nostalgia from the masses to keep going under its own thing. Evolution of Combat and all the other freemium shit like Squeal of Fortune and whatnot pretty much killed RS3 for me.

I just realized it's basically the RS equivalent of Starbow

I've been playing for awhile. I quit with the addition of the Grand Exchange as that's when Runescape really went down hill for me before. Plus not really a fan of the blowgun unless they nerfed it made voiders way to fucking strong as if void needed a PvP buff anyways.

Was really hoping the game wouldn't go down the same path of OP gear and not having to interact with players at all as RS2 did.

Hopped back on 4 days ago and hooked. Played on and off from 06-11 and just got other interests. Best game to play when you're just relaxing compared to most games I play like CS or Dota 2.

I don't really get what you mean, imo GE was an easy way to make money as a low leveler, get uncommon items, etc. Also your complaint of having to interact with other players is what the GE does best, you don't have to sit in varrock or seer's village spamming selling/buying items and negotiating with dozens of others spamming other trades.

My problem with the GE is merch clans control everything. If a clan decides they want x item to go up in price everyone else is just fucked. You could argue that it can happen with the old trade system but the chances of that happening are slim to none. Now they can just put up an offer and buy the entire item stock out.

The other part of it I actually enjoyed haggling players for better deals. Its just not fun in my opinion and it just makes it more obvious that the game is going to go down hill from here. Pretty soon Dclaws, Curses, Dungeoneering and what ever the hell else they feel.

Just not my kinda of game.

Also your post confused me a bit as I WANT player interaction and the GE doesn't do that on ANY level.

All added features are player-voted. If they can amass 75% of the player vote for a given feature, it can't make the game go downhill in the eyes of the majority of the playerbase.

As far as merch clans go, they can't permanently raise the price themselves - as soon as they cash in, they release all the quantity of item that they bought and the price goes down again by the law of supply.

I never said they could? Just because 75% of the player base wants curses and dclaws doesn't mean I do. I stated I didn't like it I'm not speaking for the entire player base obviously. The merch clans can raise whatever items price they want as long as they want especially items that don' have that much quantity to begin with. If an entire clan spent a whole week just buying all the gold ores for example the price would raise to an extreme high and normal players would be screwed. Sure you can argue that a few weeks later things may normalize but that doesn't help the player right now does it?

With things like gold ore they're running on a timer because people will mine gold ore and sell it to deflate the price.

I just feel like there's more to be gained, since bargaining, specificially someone who's open to haggle, has been typically hard for me to find before GE.

I might have to check out 07scape again. I recently quit WoD after coming back from a 5 year break--I couldn't justify paying $15/mo just to login for arena, LFR, and garrison dailies and not enjoying it at all.

I was a huge RSC player back in the day and stopped playing a little after the release of RS2. The current RS3 is beyond confusing to me with all of the updates and new combat system.

I wouldn't mind getting back to basics and playing a bit of a grinder. I never got close to end game content anyway.

I feel like it's got the good old F2P grinding with more rewards, namely membership bonds. There's an exchange rate for RS2007 to RS3 gold, so you just amass money playing oldschool, and either buy the bonds on this one, or just forward the money along to RS3 and get one there. Eventually of course it'll all stabilize and it won't really matter anymore.

A lot of the members' quests (and the free ones too, but those are pretty easy) are really well thought out and engaging, that's something I've found lacking in SWTOR when you move aside from the main quest storyline.

God I missed this game. Hope they release the F2P highscores, I feel like I'm doing pretty well now that we all started on an even playing field.

I think the exchange rate is still running at 1:8. If you get ~850k in OSRS you can port it over and get your bonds for a lower price.

With GE that might have been shot and it could've stabilized more. I haven't been able to play since a few hours before they released the GE. I even saw the post at 5 am. History being made

I've been playing this game again for some reason. I really just like the market, I need to find an MMO that is more focused on the economy, I don't really enjoy skill grinding at all.

Not sure if bonds are available for sale in RS2 yet.

Well deadman mode tournament seemed to do well. Competitive pk'ing should have been a thing a long time ago; mains fighting with dharoks, ags, piety etc. is a beautiful thing to see.

Oh and props to faux for completing monkey madness in like 5 hours of starting a deadman account LOL

Honestly the tournament during the week was fun to keep up with but the ending was TERRIBLE...

I haven't been watching streams much but most streamers do stuff so quickly cause they have viewers feeding them supplies which makes it less impressive if he did that.

Yea I know that but its the fact that he did it without melee protect at such a low level (30-ish i think) with some mad kiting with the bone crossbow.

Population is spiking sharply to all-time highs right now since the mobile release! (143k simultaneous logged on, vs around ~70k on previous peaks 2013-2017)

Anyone around?

>150k now

I've been playing a ton over the last week, made my first OSRS char (i last played before OSRS, maybe 2011-2012 timeframe). Missing some of the changes that were made after 2007 like the 2008 graphical rework that added textures to everything but i'm glad that a lot of the other stuff is gone. A lot of other people must also be, given the player counts
