$4million is pocket change in terms of industry, pretty much any industry at that.
Making a typical AAA game will run it at over 20 mil easily for development costs alone, ignoring marketing. A lot of the huge games cost in the hundreds of millions.
$4million is about on par with the original Baldurs gate series, although BG2 probably cost more. Tools have improved but so has inflation, either way $4 million isn't going to get you the most omfg mind blowing graphics, but with talent it can get a really nice art style which I think this game definitely has.
I actually agree that the 3D models are sort of ugly. Mostly the animations but the models themselves too. All the prerendered stuff looks absolutely gorgeous though imo. And yeah, this game could have looked like torment and I would still have bought and played it xd. Any prettiness at all is icing on the cake.
Question though, do we know if the entire development cycle was paid for via kickstarter or do they still need to make some sort of sales goal in order not to consider this project a failure?
Only had a quick look at the Giant Bomb video cause I'm at work but it just looks. So. Fucking. Good. The game just has such a cool "Baldur's Gate" feeling to it, I just can't wait to get my hands on it. Environments are absolutely beautiful, characters are a bit meh but that's something they can probably improve once they get feedback from beta. I just hope the combat system lives up to its predecessor and is challenging enough...
I'll have a closer look at the video this evening but I'm already sold on this game!

The site states "Spring 2015" but no specific date yet. Should be soon though.
Damn.I was hoping for a late december.
That was the first plan, but after they released the beta to backers, and got lots of negative feedback they decided to delay it a few months to polish the game more. And it was a very good call.
There was a "let's play with a newbie" streaming event for this game. Sawyer helps Jesse Cox go through the start of the game in a 2 hours play session (he also helps overcoming some bugs or cheats).
I would have preferred someone more familiar with the IE games so that he could ask questions to the developer instead of panicking every minutes but it still show some of the game.
By the way this thread should be renamed "Pillars of Eternity" everytime I look for it by searching pillars I have to remember it wasn't the project's name :p
On a side note. After some forum reading on rpgcodex and on obsidian forums, the general idea is that mostly the combat need some work in the beta before release.

I've always wondered about this, for kickstarted games in general (well, at least ones of large enough scope, like this one, Wasteland and Broken Age for example).
Also, I never noticed Paradox was in this project. Nice!
Paradox is simply the publisher, I doubt they had anything to do with the game, it's really Obsidian outsourcing the marketing / customer support / etc, since Paradox is probably more equipped to deal with that than Obsidian.
damn this game looks amazing. love how they put in all that nostalgia service. if that game is as good as its first impression then thats def instabuy praise kickstarter material
Yeah, I'm still excited about that one. I didn't have the chance to back it up on KS, but I still pledged on their site afterwards. Looking forward to it ^^
