First time posting a thread, but I thought it was warranted. What is space station 13?

The brief overview from http://nanotrasen.com/
/tg/station 13 is a paranoia-laden roleplaying game set against the backdrop of a nonsensical, metal death trap masquerading as a space station. The game is 2D, sprite, and tile-based. It's written in BYOND, which accounts for its attrocious controls and limited graphical capability. Despite its shortcomings, it's amazingly fun for what it is. Prepare to lose many hours to it.

From http://nanotrasen.com/wiki
Space Station 13 is a two dimensional, multiplayer, role playing game developed on Byond.
The game takes place on a fully destructable space station which is in orbit of a nearby gas giant.
The primary purpose of the station is to research a newly discovered material called Plasma. Unfortunately Nanotrasen, the megacorp which owns Space Station 13 is not the only corporation interested in this mysterious new substance. Dealing with the threats posed by the many enemies of Nanotrasen becomes an important part of the daily lives of the crew.
The game begins in the game lobby where you can customize your character and select which job you would like him to have. Jobs range from the captain, to the heads of staff, to engineers, medical doctors, scientists, security officers, atmospheric technicians, the chef, bartender as well as the occasional clown to lighten the mood.

I just heard about this game recently from a friend, and was honestly astounded I'd never heard of it before. Imagine a game played in intense hour long rounds where you role play one of the crew members of a fully functioning space station, complete with labs, engineering, botany, mining, and even robotics, genetics, and a played controlled ship Ai that can open doors (or electrocute people if it's hijacked). Now on top of the difficulties of running the ship, there are randomly chosen enemies for each round. These can be syndicate agents looking to steal items or assassinate specific crew members, revolutionaries who can indoctrinate others to their cause and want to kill the captain+all the division heads, cultists, aliens, zombies, even wizards. A few players are randomly selected (depending on preferences you set) to be secret antagonists, all are assigned jobs on the ship, and the round starts.

Typically, the situation on ship soon devolves into blood stained, flickering lights, robots-gone-haywire chaos, as the infiltrators hijack and abuse all the ship's complex systems and items, while the rest of the crew attempts to hold things together long enough for the traitors to be exposed and eliminated, or failing that, make it to the escape shuttle in time for launch.

Sounds deep, yes? Maybe too deep for an internet world filled with trolls who enjoy ruining things? Fortunately there are admins on each server who monitor the action, ensuring that the game is kept as realistic as possible (for example, spreading info in chat about what killed you after you're dead is disallowed... Though you CAN be brought back to life as a clone or cyborg with some memories intact).

Game is free to play, would love to get some tl members involved and maybe have our own ss13 server.

Yep. Yesterday I was playing a server with about 40 people on it. Was confusing as hell until I figured out the controls. But interacting with everyone was fun as hell. The security guys interrogate you for no reason and say stuff like "you wanna end up in the brig, punk?" and I'M asking the questions here." the head engineer overhears the captain dying violently on the radio and says "huh. Guess this solar panel maintenance can wait." the clown places banana peels in critical areas of the ship and laughs at you when you trip. everyone's role playing lightly. It's cool beans.

Keep away from all Clowns just around to Grief, alot of people know this game as a griefing engine. I used to play on the goons server. Heres one story that happend a while back i started the round as a robotisist traitor i was ordered to kill one person and then survive untill the end of the round.

So i pulled out my pda and got myself a det pack for the pda to blow that guy up, I kinda messed up and blew up my own pda causing massive damage to the robotics lab, I spot my target running down the back engineering tunnel so i gave chase with a air bottle i managed to swing and hit him, he disarmed me. I switch the coms to tell security that he assaulted me, we both had a battle on the com channel the sec arrest me but buying my bluff that i was the victim of an assassination attempt on my life using the robotics lab proof. i kept chasing this guy and tried to kill him, lag spike happend and i was spaced. I stuck around to the end of the round. found out we were both traitors tasked to kill each other.

I am banned from a server since i was caught overloading the singu core, i pleaded with the GM that someone else had done it. but like Security they over react.
Drone untill i die.

I know it's off topic, but I saw Space Station and had to plug the fact that I spent 2 hours yesterday slogging through the Swamp of Eternal Stench in "Space Station Silicon Valley". God I love that game.

As far as this one goes, I just haven't been impressed with these types of games so far, so I'll probably pass.

If anyone wants to go on same server, My byond account is lethediver.

Still pretty newb, but I've been specializing as a botanist and having awesome, wacky times. Nearly resurrected someone as a pod person (failed cause he was afk)... Played one game where our chef was a lizard person who had hijacked the ship ai to think lizards are humans and vice versa. let the lab be overrun by fungi until eventually the Nettles had poisoned the air and me and my assistant had to have CPR done on us by the bartender... Twice. (first time we didn't know wtf had happened)... Nearly died again when the ship ai finally started trying to purge the hostile "non humans" but my buddy dragged me to the escape shuttle in time. He didn't make it out himself though cause he went back in to try to save someone else.

Epic round...

I tried it and didnt understand anything that was going on. I just ended up roaming in the maintenance corridors and stealing stuff from the other departments when no one was watching. I think I also rigged a pressure thingy to lower the pressure but I don't think it did anything lol
Plus I had horrible lag on that server, it was barely playable ...

I think you might want to read a tutorial. It's a bit complex.

I think it's a much better idea to just specialize in one role; I first specialized in Cargo technician and now I know how cargo rolls. Now, I switched to security cause I find it a LOT more fun, and I play that every round.

I think the hard roles are station engineer, Atmos, and medical.

What server are you guys playing on? The game seems fun but it looks like different servers have different roles and I don't know if I want to bother learning a complex game just to play with 4chan people.
