One of the spriters from the Terraria team decided to start up on a new project earlier this year called Starbound. It's basically Terraria with ever so slightly better graphics and a much more expansive universe (literally).
The game is still currently in development, but when I checked out their website, I was very excited for what they're doing over there. You will be able to play on multiple planets with their own generated biomes and landscapes. You will be able to explore, collect fauna, craft items and mounts(!), and customize endlessly. I have been on their site less than an hour but this game has gotten me very excited!
If you guys want to support Starbound's development, you can pre-order here.
The game is currently in development, so I will update this post as more info is released! Update (4/28/2013): Added Glitch, Roadmap, music, and pre-order links.
Keeping a close eye on this one. I've put 200+ hours into Terraria and this looks really promising, even though it might be quite different gameplay wise.
I really didn't like the idea of Terraria originally, but I was playing Minecraft at the time and had only ever heard it described as a 2D Minecraft, which didn't sound appealing at all. That description doesn't come close to covering the depth that the game offers and boy was I glad I gave it a try anyway.
Now Starbound is a thing, I can't wait to get my hands on it. It looks like it will really expand on the strengths of the first game (exploration, procedural content generation, tech progression). Definitely one to watch.
Preordered a few days ago when they were almost at 4k preorders already. Now they're almost at 22k and reached the first stretch goal. I'm pretty sure the next one will be reached as well.
On April 16 2013 00:57 Simberto wrote: I want this. But i still won't be preordering until they release a beta, since blind preordering is bad in my opinion.
It depends. Sure you can always end up with a bad game, but it also helps the developers, especially if they're independent. It's a good way to gauge general interest and in this case enables the team to put food on their table without taking a 2nd job on the side, thus being able to also spend more time with developing the game.
Sometimes you still have to have a little faith. Also it's not really a $60 game this time, $15 is quite affordable.
It's true though, that some companies/publishers have strained that faith

you are not blind preordering, there is quite alot to see already (in my opinion).
Does anyone know if there will be any sort of GUI/lobby/matchmaking sort of system available for this? My biggest problem with Terraria was simply finding people/servers. I could dig around and find them, but I'd probably play a lot more if it was more accessible to play multiplayer.

Hi there, i'm one of the developers working on starbound, really glad to see a thread about our game here on TL :D (this is me https://twitter.com/legrisoui although i use another name here that i've used online for starcraft since i played sc/bw back in the day.)
Right now we're working really hard to get the game to a stage where we can start beta testing it with all of you who preordered the game, the sales we've made so far is going to make that so much easier, so thanks guys <3

Wow rarely see this kind of community interaction from modern gaming companies, kudos.
Not digging that the million dollar goal are some starter pets. Can't quite illustrate why I feel so but I worry about the atmosphere the pets may impose and whether this was a worthwhile goal. I understand that the goals are not for features but paying the developers so there may be a faster release but I feel like the hype levels dropped a bit.

Yeah not liking the idea of starter pets much either.
What bothers me more is they "are not just going to be eyecandy" which indicates every single person in the game is going to be running around with a pet of some sort which seems somewhat atmosphere damaging to me. If they are used primarily for things such as home defense I would be fine with it though.
Congrats to chucklefish for reaching the 750k mark though. ^^
Likely won't preorder, but I'll be watching for this when it comes out. Terraria gave me and my brother hours of entertainment, if this can come close it'll be well worth it.

i dont mind the starter pets because the pet system was going to be in the game anyway. They had information public for a while now, where we can capture pets and use them for combat. The starter pets, you simply begin the game with them and they are going to be "weaker" compared to the ones we find through the randomness of the game.

Yeah I know pets were going to be in game by default, looks interesting.
Just going to seem odd to me if every single person has a pet following them around.
I mean you are going to be capable of flying around, using mechs etc in this game, do you really want your cat with you when doing this? They said pets will be useful I just hope leaving them at home will be viable lol.

Ellen Ripley would not be complete without Jonesy. And she does quiet some flying around, using mechs and kicking alien butt. So yes, I do want my cat with me when doing this. Although Hypnotoad might be a good companion too.
As someone who played the shit out of terraria with friends, I am super excited at the promise of this game. I know people have mentioned hosting servers will be easier, but will they be Hamachi-free?
Im bumping this thread so anyone still interested in playing the game should know that beta has been confirmed for Dec 4th release. You need to pre order the game to get access. If you haven't been following their daily/weekly updates then you're in for a good surprise on how much they added to the game since insomnia gaming festival.
edit: they're going to be testing beta through steam btw

They have stated that they want the game to be "child friendly" or whatever. When I read that, I immediately regretted backing them.
Not sure why this hasn't been bumped! (Well, 1 week ago) Any persons who pre-ordered get to play the Beta tomorrow! Dec.4th!!! Im hoping at midnight EST so i can play in like 3 hours.

Ahhhg! You didnt need to say it lol. Oh well, ill get a good sleep and plow her hard tomorrow.
Not sure if I want to preorder it just to play in the beta, my experience with preorder betas aren't very good :/ A beta full of missing features and bugs is what I am fearing and a nearly release ready version is what I am hoping.
Would love to know if we could expect the full game to come out in the next couple of months or if we can expect half a year for it to be "finished".

I don't know, with a game like this it can be 99% playable and still be a long way from "finished," look at how much content Terraria ultimately ended up with. From what I've seen in streams/videos, there is already a lot to do in the game, and the "unfinished" part is manifesting itself in occasional client crashes and balance issues with some gameplay elements, i.e. what you would expect from a beta product.
There is some wonky stuff with the quest journal as well, i.e. the game implying you need a distress beacon in order to progress immediately, which isn't true. The distress beacon is one-use only and summons a rather high-level boss for where you are at in the game when you can first craft one, which means most people get quickly raped and lose out on all their materials, when they really should have been jumping offworld and improving their character on other planets before bothering with it.
So far it looks like an awesome experience, especially for $15, even in beta.

They said it's going to be a real beta, so expect it to miss features and have bugs. :p
Been playing this! I can't seem to restore health with cooked alien meat. And my wheat and carrots seem to be taking forever to grow. Also, how do I harvest crops? When I use the matter manipulator, they just give me seeds. So either they're not fully ripe, or that's not how you harvest them?

I haven't farmed anything, but I remember watching a stream where the streamer just pressed E next to the crop to harvest it. You can regenerate health alowly by sleeping in a bed.

I haven't crashed yet, or noticed any significant bugs. I got a bit of lag entering a certain area, but I just played through it. Some details are missing, like item descriptions, but so far it appears to be quite playable.
I have found one bug so far. When you play in a party and teleport to a friends ship and on his ship, teleport to his ship again, your character just vanishes and you can't move anymore.
Apart from that the game seems very well polished so far, which is really nice after the disaster I had a few weeks ago that was X:Rebirth.
Really nice improvements to building, mining, combat, and exploration over terraria. It is lacking in content but it is the start of beta. They've fleshed out the base system, getting in more content will be easier to do.
Wow... so the star map only shows 1 star system? there are more?! sweet jesus. I didn't expect there to be so many explorable planets in the beta. It seems like a full game to me.
I have some weird descriptions like "testflower7". Besides that, this game is such a blast to play! Only had one major crash after exiting the game (Runtime error)
On December 05 2013 22:26 Ramong wrote: Any idea about how many craft able items, furnitures, tiers of weapons and Armour, dungeons and bosses, etc. there are?
I doubt here is a list of all that stuff and considering nobody has explored the entire game, there is no way of knowing.
Yeah that's one thing that has irked me so far. The matter manipulator is a cool idea in a game like this, because I hate carrying around multiple tools to do the things I want to do, but it is made obsolete so quickly by stone tools. Hopefully there is a way to upgrade it to bring it up to speed with specialized tools so it is at least a competitive choice. Right now it's sitting in my inventory and I haven't used it in hours. It seems like a waste for it to just be your introductory tool, to never be seen again once you get a cobblestone mining pick.

I think there will be an upgrade but it would more of a mid-late game thing.

Just to make sure, you did use a PICKaxe, right? because the AXE is only for wood.
Also, how do you make an iron pickaxe? I could only make copper and silver.
And since we are at it, how do you get to a friends ship?
Edit: Nvm, just found it on the post that you can warp to a friends ship once they are in your party by clicking on their portrait.

On December 06 2013 00:07 Simberto wrote: Where did you do that? Because i am pretty sure i looked at least 10 times and didn't find that recipe anywhere.
First I made a Stone Furnace to smelt the iron ore I found. Then I simply experimented at the work bench and saw couple of stuff I could make with the iron bars.
Experimented? I only got schematics on the left, which i can use to build stuff. And none of those is an iron pickaxe. If i search for pick, i only see the stone one.
Regarding the boss, you can cheese it pretty easily, and i think that is kind of necessary since you only got iron gear before you kill it. Firstly, save any bombs/grenades you found, they will be very helpful.
The way we beat it was having a multistory house with a small balcony and beds inside. The ship appeared above, through soldier below and on the roof, and we could pop onto the balcony and shoot it with iron bow for ages until it died. Sometimes you take damage and have to sleep.
I got an iron anvil. There i can craft a lot of stuff. But no iron pickaxes. For me the progression was stone-copper-silver-gold so far, all upgrading the previous one. I even got the upgraded anvil for steel stuff. And no steel pickaxe either. Or is it one of the 6 weapons at the beginning of the list which all don't look like a pickaxe in the slightest?
What the fuck. I just discovered a legendary weapon in my backpack that I hadn't looked at before. It's a Bonehammer and it smashes an area of like 40-50 tiles and destroys them in 2-3 hits. Ridiculous.

Yeah so far I like the itemization in this game. Found a legendary sword on my second planet that does mediocre damage but swings super fast and shoots out poison cloud projectiles when I swing that I've been using to cheese monsters around corners, etc. and kill birds with.
I'm impressed so far. As someone who couldn't really get into Terraria at all, I'm having a blast. It's probably partially helped by the SciFi theme, but the game is solid, even though it's still an early beta. I had one crash about 10 minutes into my first play session, but haven't crashed in 3 hours since.
I'm not sure if I like that weapon or not, it's kind of gamebreaking. Although, it doesn't even scratch obsidian and takes 10-15 hits to destroy cobblestone.

If you want to return to your ship from deep underground, choose save+quit from the menu and reload, you will appear on your ship. It can save a lot of time. Also when you start exploring/mining downwards, don't dig in a straight line for too long, or you might gib yourself the next time you head down your tunnels.
So bread heals you when you eat it, instead of making bandages, ive made a massive wheat farm lol. I think 1 wheat picked, gives 2 seeds back, so you can support this forever. Walking around dungeons with 50 loaves of bread really helps you to not die and lose all the precious time walking back!

Try to find a dungeon. Twice I've found an Avian dungeon which netted me maybe 2-3k and they were both extremely easy, I didn't even get a scratch (used the Iron Bow).

Did anyone find the Ape dungeon or whatever on the first planet? What the hell is up with that place? I made it to the end through the electrical traps, but there was only a dead end.
Hmm, just flew to a moon. Don't have enough fuel to fly back, and mining coal is a bitch as every time I walk away from the campfire I freeze to death in a few seconds.

I'm having fun with this, my mates have got bonehammers and heaps of cool gear but for the life of me I can't find any decent dungeons, just found a village so far.
Does the penguin ship go away if you die while fighting it? Or is it still around on my planet somewhere?

Me and my friends died many time while fighting it, but we always had one guy keeping it in combat, even though I can't say for sure if that's neccesary.
On December 06 2013 08:52 Animzor wrote: I died to the penguin boss and I just ran around the entire planet. No boss.
Yes, that boss is level 10 and the beacon can only be used once. There should be an indication in the quest journal that the quest is high level (for when you get it) and to not place a beacon until you're ready to fight it.
Hey guys, a couple quick tips for the penguin boss. The way to kill it posted on the web is to build a bunker with a tiny slit facing upwards and firing lots of arrows up in its direction. It's tendency to float directly above or slightly to one side of means the arrows will most likely hit on either the upwards or downwards path.
I however figured out an even easier way. The ship spawns directly above your beacon. Once you place the beacon and it spins to show it's a valid location, build a large box of land around the space to hold the ship in place. When the ship tries to move and gets caught in the box it glitches his move scripting he stands still while you build a land path out to him and club him to death. Enjoy!
EDIT: By large box, I mean enough to house 3-4 of the ships. You want to give it plenty of space to spawn, and then run it up into the ceiling of the box.
At first I thought it was a massive gold mine but turns outs its "obsidian" is this any good at all? first time ive came across it. I want to know because its gonna take me years to farm all this with copper pickaxe
The progression is completely broken currently. For the early levels, its mostly just cheese Boss, go to high level planet, dig stuff up while walling in every enemy, repeat. Once you get to higher levels than 30, you can actually get gear that helps you when it helps you. Don't plan on fighting stuff before lvl 30, unless specifically to get pixels. You will never find the metals you need for the next step in areas where you can find the enemies.
Sadly, no enemies in the game can deal with walls in any way, so this isn't really a problem. I really hope for some major changes in the future in this regard. In theory, building a castle to fight a boss seems cool. In praxis, if they can't destroy walls, that means you stand behind a wall and shoot arrows through small hole through which the Boss can't fire back, and if you use anything but dirt for this wall it will never break it.
It is still fun, but it is quite obvious how Beta this is when compared to something like Terraria. (Which i guess is an unfair comparison given how much time terraria has had to evolve) I hope that this stuff will get addressed and the game becomes amazing once it launches, but that will involve quite a few changes.
Mmmyeah, tho I think the fixes will come fast.. one out just now that fixes alot of woes and I hope they can keep up the pace as we find flaws and imbalances.. But, beta is beta.. the problem I think is folks have forgotten that beta is supposed to be used to get the game ready, but I feel some gamecompanies have abused this by releasing a half-assed game and calling it beta just to get away with selling a product they never intend to finish
Can recommend it anyhow, I´ve had fun the 10 or so hours I put in already.
Well it's beta after all and apparently there's a big update coming up again. There are a lot of things in there that I've noticed so far as well and it sounds a bit more balanced.
- Massively reducing the pixel cost (sometimes eliminating it entirely) on early weapons/armor. You can build a refinery in later tiers to turn ores of all kinds into pixels. (done) - Monsters now have a small chance to drop meat when killed with normal weapons. (done) - You can no longer teleport to another players ship from underground (done) - Bandages are now craftable with 4 plant fibres, no longer require fabric (done) - Fix human starter chest showing apex starter items (done) - Monsters now have a 70% chance to drop meat when killed with a hunting weapon, up from 50% (done) - Make guards you’ve summoned refer to you as their boss (done) - Make the refinery appear earlier in the game (done) - Reduced fuel costs a bit to go to other planets (done) - Tweaked wording of starter quests to encourage exploring of more planets. (done) - Added hunting knife weapon that also makes monsters drop meat (done) - Added new legendary weapon (done) - Pixel loss on death reduced to 20% for testing, might change further (done) - [16:27] <Mortvert> Tiy_, Also, could you make silver more visible, please? (Done) - Added new armor that provides a good amount of warmth early on in the game at the sacrifice of armor levels. (done) - Tweaked the UFO boss to make him smash blocks. (done) - Also make him a little bit easier by changing him to level 9 from level 10 (done) - Revamping the warmth bar to make it more obvious (suggestion by thedbp on reddit) http://i.imgur.com/O2IYd6k.png (done) - Increase mining speed a little (done) -Add numbers above the hotbar slots http://i.imgur.com/qTJiFrS.png (done) - Craftable climbing ropes! (done)
- Make sure hunger bar is always shown when eating food (done)
- Make hunger bar display when the alt key is held down (done) - Added a dumb, quick way to advance through some of the tier 4-10 content (armors, weapons), just for fun. Complete tiers of content are coming really soon. I’d like to get 1/2 tiers of content done per week. (done) - Fixed a bug where minibosses over level 11 were not dropping the rare items they were supposed to be dropping. They now drop guns. (Thank you to <ippia> for finding this) (done) - Ufos should hopefully not fly off anymore, they were actually flying off to attack birds! (done) - Tons of bug fixes - Bartwe is working on the windows XP issues, not sure yet if it’ll be done by tonight but fingers crossed. Might be tomorrow.
I just clicked my spinning wheel and now im able to craft "snow infrantry armour" this armour gives better stats then silver armour and is much easier to craft, you need leather only Oo. Is this correct? I went to a lot of trouble getting the materials for silver.
I kited the penguin boss half way across the planet with my iron hunting bow and 30 bandages and just endured it, it was a really really annoying and tedious fight but I got it.
Are there are any quests after the penguin boss or does it just stop giving quests after that?
Will repeat what I said few posts up, this "snow infantry armour" is kinda op, its better then both silver and gold and costs much much less. Just basicly tanked penguin boss without even using any heals.. everything does 1-5 dmg to me now.
does anyone else gets problems playing multiplayer, seems like i have to create a new char everytime i want to play with someone or we both cant join the world for some reason
Shields seem quite broken. They don't have a block value, they literally just block damage, including things like beast charge, and lightning based attacks. The only cost is that your energy does not recharge while you have a shield up.
Massive updates coming up, i believe they are wiping our characters, but im very happy with what they will be doing, improving on combat mechanics, and eliminating armor penetration completely among other things.
Ok guys so we decided to make this update a lot bigger. It’s going to take a day or two to complete and I wanted to explain exactly what we’re doing with the balance of the game to open it up for discussion.
Currently the damage system in Starbound is built around an armor penetration system. This system was put in place to account for the 100 planet levels, 100 monster levels and so on. Whilst the system works it leads to a difficulty curve that can be confusing to navigate as well as stats that are a little more difficult to understand. (A weapon that does 40 damage, only does 40 damage to a monster of the same level as the weapon. Otherwise as the distance between armor penetration/armor level grows the damage increases/decreases.)
It’s hard to know exactly how much damage your weapon will do to any given monster and it’s difficult to know which of two weapons is the most effective.
Another problem with this system is items that do a static amount of damage. For example in the current alpha sector it’s possible to find throwing daggers with 5 armor penetration. These daggers are extremely powerful in the lower half of the tier but near useless in the upper half.
When working with 100 levels, without the armor penetration system you end up with absurd damage/health values that are far too big to be manageable and that’s the reason this system was originally in place.
So over this weekend we’re going to work on the solution to this problem. We’re going to reduce the number of planet levels from 100, to 10. *This is not a decrease in the amount of content, it’s simply a change to how leveling functions*. The smaller number of levels means that we can remove armor penetration entirely and simplify weapon damage. You’ll be able to directly compare weapon DPS which will now appear on the weapons tooltip. Armor will become easier to understand and will gain additional buffs, such as increasing player max health. We’re also now able to remove armor from monsters and simply give more powerful monsters more health, this way you always know how much damage your weapon will do.
Monsters will no longer have a level, instead monsters will be given an easy/medium/hard marker, that shows you how difficult a monster is in the context of the sector it’s in. For example, a hard monster in sector 1 will be roughly the same strength as an easy monster in sector 2. The difficulty of monsters will increase the lower you dig, but so will the rewards.
Items with a static amount of damage will be manually balanced and useful for the entire sector you find them on. Given that the range of health difference will be lower now, we can ensure that items such as throwing daggers will be useful for the entire sector. We’re also able to make sure that when you craft the best armor in a sector, you’ll be in good shape for the next sector. By ensuring that the hardest monsters in sector 1 match the easiest monsters in sector 2, you’ll be able to progress without having to face instakills on either side.
I suspect this game will drastically improve the balance of the game and make the extra wait worth it.
Coming along with this update will be a bunch of bug fixes and some new content.
Shortly after this update we’ll be adding a complete sector 4, delta sector.
This update will probably require a character reset (I’m sorry! Beta )
Seems like they are working day and night all week fixing bugs and adding things. Respect to that
Would have loved it if big companies like Creative Assembly did that before releasing TW:Rome2.
Even tho it is a beta and I have been running into weird bugs and balance issues, I have still had fun with it. Can't wait to see what this "big" update is changing
I like the update! Already gotten to the "end game" where I cant progress any further. Found some awesome tech that, along with my energy regen, lets me constantly fly around planets shooting stuff with an awesome shotgun I found. Game is fun, but progression and tiers are really weird atm!
I remember playing terraria and basicly just farming until my character had the best armor / weapon and killing all bosses. I played with a friend and in the and we were 100% equally equiped because there was just 1 best of everything, also there was no character spezialisation, felt really dull to have this random, soulless clone outfitted like probably every other player who played through the game.
Is there a skill tree of some sorts this time, something to make characters more diverse?

Weapons are procedurally generated which could mean many 'best' weapons if they add enough good modifiers for them. I don't know about armor.
Characters also have techs which are basically abilities like double jump and such, but you can only use one at a time. I think they will change this to having multiple techs active at the same time (pure speculation).
- HUGE balance patch, every item, creature, armor and weapon rebalanced. Leveling system entirely rewritten Although the balance is early the new leveling system, the system is much better than the old one and we can now improve balance over time.
- Added early implementation of creature taming (more features coming soon) - Added new mining items - Added new weapons - Added new throwable items - Added grappling hook - Added new boss and new sector of the galaxy - Added a stance system to weaponry, not currently used but will allow us to add secondary attacks to weaponry very soon. - Tons of new sounds - Guns more common in tier 3 - Underground detached/rare biomes more common - Underground random encounters more common - Underground chests more common - Ore rebalance (probably way way too much ore at the moment, will be fixed later, enjoy it) - Baby monsters - New monster palettes - Added pixel compressor for high cost banking (idea from Ncrpts) - Disable using the beamaxe to light caves underground - Added new hats - some monsters now graze on grass (can look ugly, needs finishing) - Small bipeds now socialise with eachother - All the monsters behave smarter and are less likely to get stuck - You can no longer attack through blocks - Fix the game on XP (hopefully) - Tons more fixes and smaller additions - More coming really soon!
While the general consensus is that this patch is great and needed, it still seems to have brought a few serious balance problems with it. Though with a weapons system remake that was to be expected.

Indeed, people are getting weapons with like 4000+ DPS, the iron bow alone now can 1 shot all the creatures on my planet, and apparently 5 shots the penguin boss.
Changelog for v. Frustrated Koala 10/12/2013 Hi guys, so last night we pushed the major balance update. We'd tested it for hours and at the last minute a bug crept in that broke crafted weapon damage, making them crazy overpowered. Hence the name of this version. That's been fixed. It was an interesting bug. The old leveling system used a "level" specified in each swords configuration file. The new system no longer uses "level", instead each sword is hand balanced. The bug that crept in at the last moment reenabled "level". Given that they are now unused, levels weren't changed from their previous values that went all the way up to level 100, and now that the game is leveled up to 10, they were massively too powerful. Also.. -Uranium, plutonium and solarium now work as fuels -You can now REALLY craft a grappling hook -Boss balance has been tightened even more -Platinum armor is now unlocked on tier 5 -You can now 'recapture' pets -some more fixes More coming really soon!

Does this wipe your characters?
Doubtfull Seems like the patch isnt live on steam yet?
Update is released! Verify your game cache in your Steam Library if it hasn't updated. Changelog for v. Offended Koala 15/12/2013
There are a whole bunch of improvements to balance here, particularly in the early game. We aren't wiping characters or worlds, but if you want to experience the proper balance you should make a new character/worlds to play it on!
Also..
- Experimental gun rebalance - Experimental biome settings - Streamlined mod support, more details here - Unique monster changes - Enable plasma guns - Fix naked NPC merchants - new portable pixel printer item (you must unlock tier 2 for it to show up in crafting). - Tons of new blocks and items to craft - New random encounters with unique items to find - Lots of work in progress server changes - Pets only attack npcs that are attacking the owner - New songs to play on instruments including christmas carols - New novelty hats - Pets now level up - you can no longer warp to gas giants - Lots more fixes and small additions More information - Experimental biome settings Explaination: Normal biomes were added as sub-biomes to other normal biomes. Sub-biomes are "biomes inside of biomes" to say. Each planet is generated with one sub-biome type. The change makes it so that a desert or a tentacle biome, for example, can be apart of a forest planet by making them a sub-biome.
Game is closely getting more balanced, now we just need them to add tons of more content.
There is a subreddit for servers, or google I guess. Sadly TL does not have one yet but seeing as how minecraft and terraria got theirs, its a safe bet we will get a server for TL peeps eventually.
This looks amazing. I watched a few videos of it. One thing that bothers me is the fact that the planets are more or less set and the good stuff only seems to spawn on a few specific ones (i.e. in fixed treasure chests/establishments rather than as drops from random encounters or w.e.).
Just bought this game and I can say that this is an amazing game. Just as I'm about to say "This wasn't a particular interesting planet", I found more interesting parts to explore.
Is it just me, or does the game randomly free all together/drop to really low FPS for a very short period of time before going back to normal again

I'm playing it, although with the way I'm playing it, I'll probably play single for most of the time., Like, there is so much to explore!

It's definitely worth the money. Starbound solves some of Terrarias flaws, but has some of its own. I can't put my finger on it but there is something about Starbound which stops me from playing hours at a time like I did with Terraria. Maybe I've just grown old...

I feel similarly to you about sinking loads of time into Starbound, but for me I think it's the whole early release thing. I sank multiple hundreds hours into a locally hosted server with some buddies on Terraria and we're holding off playing Starbound to that level until the game is finalized. Individually we all played solo for 20+ hours each at the beta launch but the wipes and drastic rebalances have softened our collective enthusiasm until everything gets ironed out.
