Does anyone have a recommendation for a place to get a SNES? As it is right now I'd be buying it from jjgames.com. I've seen some good reviews of their site. If someone else has a better place to go for whatever reason(cheaper, better quality used systems, etc) lemme know. Thanks.

Watching Carl and Trihex run it looks like it would be fun. Plus the art in the game still looks amazing to this day. I also never owned a SNES as a kid, first system was an N64, so it would be fun to play a system I could have had when younger but was denied by my overzealous parents. You can use ebay/amazon and probably be able to find a fairly well used console, that's where my friend told me he got his, but JJgames does look like a pretty respectable site. I've never used it however. If you're planning on running Yoshi's Island, I'm pretty sure as with many SNES games that the Japanese versions are faster due to text scrolling faster. You should probably look into finding the Japanese Cart if you are really serious about running the game but the wiki I have looked at says that you only lose 4 seconds or so on the introduction and time for every dialogue box that shows up afterward but it doesn't quantize the actual amount of time lost. It's probably no big deal but something you might want to think about. Aside from that, I haven't found anything about Yoshi's Island having multiple revisions that have gameplay differences making one better than the other, for example, I am learning aLttp and apparantly there's a 1.0 Japanese Cart that is superior to everything else (there are 1.1,1.2 carts, think like how OOT has multiple revisions) and it's been really troubling me to find one I can afford. I was asking people on the speedrunslive irc and they were telling me effectively that North American SNES will be able to run Japanese cartriges, so long as they are the ntsc? versions and not the pal ones. However, the only problem with this is that the super famicom cartriges don't fit into North American Super Nintendo's and the only solution to it is to either cut the tabs into the cartridge's frame or remove the plastic tabs from the super nintendo with a dremel or similar tool. Sorry to add things that weren't directly tied to the original question, but they are probably things you might want to consider when buying the super nintendo console.

Thank you for the thoughtful response!! I am aware that some modding would be required to play a jpn cart on the american SNES but I at one point looked into jpn carts on an N64 and the modding is similar. From what I've heard the modding on the SNES is easier than the N64. The way I'm looking at it now is to just have a SNES to have it and play some classic games I never got to play as a kid, while also seeing if Yoshi's Island would be a game that I might like to play thousands of times for a speedrun. So I figure the US version now and in several months, if I'm still playing it, I can look into the famicom cart for it. Baby steps in a sense to avoid possible burnout. Good to hear that the reviews I read about JJgames weren't in vain either.

Trihex/Carl have the japanese cart because they wanted to make sure that their times were exactly comparable with the japanese ones. Modding a US SNES to play famicom games takes about 30 seconds. You literally just break the tabs. Also, sounds like you're going about it the right way. Going straight into learning Yoshi's Island 100% is not something 99% of people should do. Play it a bunch, probably learn the any% route casually (say, sub 2:40) then go up to 100%. There will be plenty of 100% World X races on SRL if you want them and a bunch of other people are learning Yoshi's Island at the moment. 100% is a real beast to tackle so good luck if you start off. Taking steps to avoid burnout is always my advice so you may want to pick up an SNES -> USB converter and do some emulator learning in the future. Yoshi's Island is on my list of games to actually finish this year and I'm looking forward to getting around to it. -------- In other news, The Sunday Sequence Break is blowing up! We got 1364 peak viewers in our show on Sunday and we're nearing 4000 followers. We've got a Pokémon Fire Red & Leaf Green episode this Sunday (00:00 GMT (+00:00)) with Werster and MexiricanBassMonkey (record holders in red and green respectively) so it should be a blast. We're applying for partner after this episode so wish us luck and come watch the show!

Then Garrison gets a sub 47 in Super Metroid Kryssstal streams Any% no EG (Exploration Glitch, turns Any% into a 4 minute run) and crushes it sub 40 (sets the WR with an impressive run) In the middle of all of this Werster streamed FireRed after getting his sub button and got fucked by Gary Round 2 because his Defense was too low and he was out of Full Restores. Werster says he's only finished this category twice...

Sub 3 hours can cut more time off that because of a minor mistake at the beginning which cost time on every split. Right now Discs 1+2 are around 6:40 could cut it down to maybe 6:35. Disc 3 is pretty short as well, and Disc 4 is pretty decent size. Right now I'm aiming for 12:xx final time, I think that's reachable with eventually getting under 12.

Like for example, Cosmo is learning Paper Mario and is using his Gamecube controller. While iateyourpie uses an N64 controller. If Cosmo were to take the record for Paper Mario would it count since he uses the gamecube controller? Its all about personal preference. Some people like the N64 controller (pie, sigl, etc), some like GC (cosmo, zfg, etc). Input does not matter for the record. All counts. What matters is what console/language you play on.
