Me and my friend have always wanted a competitive game where we can play together without relying on anyone else, but it seems that literally every 2v2 game is just a variant of the main game. StarCraft 2v2 is nowhere near as competitive as 1v1, Halo is typically 4v4, LoL is 5v5, etc. So what I'm wondering is if there are any good competitive games where 2v2 is the main competitive mode of the game. We don't want a game where 2v2 is an offshoot, we want a game designed for 2v2 competition.

Ideally, the game would be real-time and free to play, but neither of these are necessary. As long as the game is competitive and decent, and balanced around 2v2, that's good enough.

Any ideas?
<@Wikt> so you are one of those nega-fans <@Wikt> that hates the company that makes a game and everything they stand for <@Wikt> but still plays the game <@Wikt> (like roughly 30% of blizzard's player base, maybe much more...)

As far as I know, nothing like this exist unfortunately but I would love to see a competitve 2v2 game. You honestly opened my eyes on subject. I would love to be able to play a competitive game with a single person. That would be so great.

Alright, so afaik the only really competive 2v2 games are RTS and mainly sc2 or scbw. However i feel you may have been mistaken in dismissing LoL out of hand. While it is indeed 5v5 when you get to ranked play you can do "solo que" as a 2 man group, thus allowing you to always play together with your freind with people that otherwise have joined solo. you will not be aginst teams, just either solo players or duo groups. But wait there is even more, the current meta game for lol calls for 3 solo lanes i.e., jungle top and mid, and one duo lane i.e., bottom. The bot lane plays with one ad (attack damage or physical dmg) carry and one support. together this is either the most important lane or 2nd most (as mid can also "carry" a team), and a well played team duo queing can be game changing. This not only would allow you to both play together but also play the same lane almost always (usually your team will let a 2 man run the bot lane if they ask, not 100% of the time....but most of the time). The downside to this plan is that you guys will either like playing carry/ support, or be forced to run solo lanes if say you like to jungle or prefer ap play of mid etc.

So all in all my answer is a cop out, but i feel it's a decent one.

You're right in that there isn't a game that focuses on 2v2. Though I wish there was one, I love 2v2 and I'd probably be super competitive in a game built around it but it's always a second rate version of something else in every game out there. Some games that you can 2v2 in besides Starcraft or the obvious RTS: Quake Live TDM (they have 2v2 servers), Bloodline Champions (you can queue 2v2), WoW Arena.

I long for the day a 2v2 mode is taken seriously in a game. Shootmania's competitive format is 3v3 so that's kind of close.

Halo CE is best played as a 2v2, but unless you've got a good group to LAN with you're kind of out of luck.

Other than that I have no idea

This actually. I was going to post about Street Fighter x Tekken. Definitely hit it up if you are into fighters at all, the 2v2 scene competitively and online is a considerable fraction, if not majority, of the game.

I also yearn for a great game truly based around 2v2 though, in the shooter/RPG/RTS style that is. Closest I ever really felt was WoW arena, but 2v2 was so random and dumb at times compared to 3v3 (any expansion). Dark Souls DLC is going to have 2v2 matchmaking queue, friend and I are INSANELY HYPED for that. 2v2 could work really well in that game; any more and it's a clusterfuck.

I think there is a fairly large competitive scene for 2v2 smash brothers melee/brawl.

I think Company of Heroes has a 2v2 mode which is reasonably popular.

Probably 2v2 fighting games, or RTS may be your best bet.

There's a competitive scene for 2v2 L4D2. I don't know how serious it is beyond some scrims but the players are generally competitive-tier players. It's super fast paced and really fun. Unfortunately, it came out like right as I got out of competitive play so I only played it once or twice.

Yeah, Two-Headed Giant isn't a format played in serious tournaments.

We've tried it. In the end, we couldn't handle having to deal with three other players on the team. We generally played mid + jungle, and we had fun, but if the other two lanes couldn't do their job, we were basically screwed. This wouldn't change if we played duo bot, either. Hence why I'm looking for a game that is 2v2, not a game where we can both play co-operatively.

I really wish for some more arena-ish games that focus MAINLY on 2v2's. Or maybe even an RTS, which it's main focus is a 2v2 would be unique too. Other than some fighters, some rts, and maybe fps, that have 2v2 as an side-option, i don't thikn there's any game that it's main point is 2v2's
i kno i r badass no need to repeat

If you have ever played the game super smash bros as a kid and enjoyed the style of game (I forget the name specifically) but in the sense of a fighting game where you hit your opponent to increase the percent/knock back they get after hitting them to try and knock them out of the stage, but try a game on steam that is free called Brawlhalla it is a game with the same style as super smash bros but has its own personal style of tech skill like instead of the famous wave dashing from melee being a meta tech skill dodge management and gravity cancelling add a big skill element to this seemingly simple fighting game. As for the 2v2 aspect they have 1v1 or 2v2 ranked play and tournaments for both, they're even trying to grow the competitive scene right now (the developers are even pushing for this came to see a competitive future) give it a shot! It's guarantee fun if you like smash bros.

Battlerite (successor to Bloodline Champions) is 2v2 or 3v3 with both modes having good support and balance (as well as tournaments). 2v2 is a bit more popular with the general population I think, while 3v3 is a bit more popular with ex-BLC players.
