I've noticed that there have been a disproportionate amount of really hyped games that ended up being rather disappointing lately. I don't know whether is gamer standards that have skyrocketed over the past few years or developers that want to rush their games out as quickly as humanly possible and compromise on quality. A few weeks ago I bought COH2. Played the full three hours before I got bored. On the other hand, there's games like HL2, WC3, SC2, Skyrim, etc. that I keep coming back to, no matter how old they are.
I agree that there is a dangerous trend to skip on proper beta tests and push out games as quickly as possible, especially for games of established franchises, and CA specifically has been notorious for buggy games. Another thing I really dislike is planning for DLCs to either promote preorders or cash in later on - stuff like this should be part of the vanilla game
On the other hand, unlike CoH2 (for which I fell too, really regret having spent money on that game), Rome 2 has a ton of potential. I'm 100% sure that after a few patches this game has the potential to become a classic, especially considering the moddability.
My problem is exactly the pushing out of games without proper beta testing. I don't mind having to wait another year or so if a game like Rome 2 can be as polished as a Blizzard or Valve title. It's been the same thing over and over with every Total War release, but still CA releases games riddled with (the same) bugs.
I've got to agree with you, I think something fairly ominous about the modern pc gaming landscape is that companies might start relying on steam workshop to 'complete' the game for them, and expecting most of their sales to come through Steam Sales so they don't bother making a fully polished game on initial release.
It might actualy look that way, the game is downgrading your settings ... my game looks better than your screenshot does, and Iam running on mostly medium settings with textures/unitdetail/shader on high.
I'm sick of dealing with 3 fps throughout turns, but I want to finish this campaign so bad.... I hope the patch they send out today optimizes the junk out of the game.

Only thing that really irks me is the naval blockades. Epirus is annoying me with numerous agents but I can't take his city because someone is " sieging" it with 2 boats for numerous turns. every time he is about to fall he will drive them off and they will be replaced by another admiral with again 1 boat or something.
rather annoying that you can't either replace them as siegers or simply attack via land while they are there. other than that, still love it.
Naval blockades are my biggest problem so far as well. My idiot trading partner is the only thing preventing me from finishing off Rome's last province. Epirus did the same thing to another one of their provinces earlier in the game. Thankfully, somebody took them out. I don't have such hopes for the Etruscans. I'm going to have to do it myself.
Seriously guize, don't take people's word for it if they tell you the co op campaign is no good, try it out. It might work for you and it's fucking awesome if it does. The ability to share every battle is soooo great.
Patch notes say nothing about the naval blockade bug or am I simply missing it. I haven't got the time to see if it's fixed ingame or not. Does anyone know yet?

yeah once they will be rid of all the bugs it will surely be at least as good as in shogun 2. i don't really get why they don't allow the human player who's turn it isn't to build stuff like it was in shogun. that way you had at least something to do while you partner was moving units around. does any1 know if there are changelogs for the patch? didn't really search for it, but steam doesn't seem to offer one.

From what I read here, performance wasn't the main target for this patch.
I think this patch was probably in dev before release, and they may still be working on fix performance issues. Hopefully it does come soon.

I thought that may be the case. When I first launched the game it was set to Extreme by default but everything looked really awful. Once I set it down to Ultra is started to look better. It's kind of confusing that I could be set to low but it allows me to adjust settings. My Shogun 2 looked better on release than this at any rate but maybe a few patches will iron that out.

I think it was some helper thing or whatever that I clicked OK to, and then everything was normal again. Something like that. I had the problem for about 20 seconds before finding the solution so I can't remember too well.

In the options? I feel really dumb for not being able to fix this problem over the last couple of days :D
anyone feels like its pointless to make a navy? i mean land units that you transport onto the water are just as good or better at boarding enemy ships. normal naval vessels have a marine crew of around 60... while transported land units can have double that. and since ramming is a big mess :S why bother with a navy?

The normal navy indeed feels bad because of limited numbers but ive found the siege ships to be pretty effective. There range is high enough to be safe while there damage sinks other ships in 1-2 hits.

It seems to me that navy ships are more durable and faster, and if you work out how to ram (seriously it's not that complicated, just keep moving in circles or figure of 8), they can wreck anything and avoid being boarded. So an army full of cataphracts could be raped hard by a reasonable navy with barely any losses...
its nice how they join when the overlord is being attacked, but they should make peace with that nation when the attacked nation makes peace. now they just keep being at war even after i made peace :S
and they shouldnt just be able to declare war on their overlord =_= subjugate a nation one turn, and they immediately betray you the next... just to be destroyed the turn after =_=

It can get even worse. I was Rome at war with Carthage. Carthage was also at war with Garamanita who i had a Non-agression pact with. I capture the last Carthage city and client state them. The war with Garamanita doesnt end and they proceed to butcher my new client. I cant even talk to them to propose a peace between Garamanita /Carthage.
Heck since you cant trade city's either you will almost always end up with controlling half a province and then clienting the last one if you want to create a buffer and then the province is broken up forever since I cant gift the mostly useless small city's to my client to help him develop.
No, what's worse is if your stupid client state or ally has a naval blockade on an enemy city that you are about to conquer. And especially when it's the last city you need before controlling the entire province. The AI is too dumb (I guess it's actually smart with the bug present) to lift the naval blockade and you can't conquer that city unless you declare war on your own client state or ally and clear out their ships from the enemy's port.
