I think I just demonstrated how not to play this game. Spawned in for my first time playing, saw some sort of pier with some building around, went in and looted a tin can. Success.
As I backed out of this little enclosed area, I noticed It was connected to a small town.. There's got to be good stuff to find there, right.. right? In I go, feeling very confident after having seen only a few dead zombie bodies around the pier. None of the small houses seem to have doors that open, so I keep walking through, until I find myself face to face with a zombie. My natural instincts are to unload everything I have at its face, forgetting that noise will attract more zombies. To cut it short, I ended up backed into a corner with no ammo and several zombies wanting to get very familiar with me. Fantastic first 15 minutes in the game.
I think I need to play this slightly differently! I'll probably hop onto TS and see if anyone takes pity on me! :D
Edit: Looking at the map, I was in Balota.
Edit #2: It happened again.

+ Show Spoiler + today's nighttime raid so far, this game is so fun (bad and amazing at the same time)

Holy shit this game is awesome! Just ran into some russian guy at a military/medical base being chased by 6 zombies, decided to help him. turns out he had a huge stash of weapons ammo and meds, we started going together but then server disconnect =/
Inventory system is so messed up in this game. Once I dropped a crossbow then couldnt find it again. Then I put my handgun in my backpack and i couldnt get it out.

What server do you guys play on? I'm usually on Dallas 33 and 34.
I murdered my first guy today. I was looting the tents in Stary Sober when I noticed him running around. I asked a few minutes before if there was any friendlies in town and I got no response, so I was inclined into shooting him. He didn't have much but I got a new backpack

Whelp, my brother and I took forever to find each other at first. We had no idea where we were, and actually found each other in the woods by shooting our pistols in the air. We met outside of Tulga.
We ventured to Three Valleys as night fell, but as I found a Winchester in a barn, my brother aggrod a good 10+ zombies. We were routed all the way back to Tulga. We hung around and licked our wounds, but eventually heard gunshots. We look around to find the source, but spotted a Jeep that wasn't there before, with a dead body near it. We book it to the Jeep and jack it for a joy ride.
Unfortunately, my brother can't drive for shit, got stuck, and we got yanked out by zombies in Kamyshovo.

Anyone else having troubles with getting it to start. I followed the install guide but when I start it a command window pops up and goes away and then nothing happens. I have uninstalled and reinstalled and it still does this, any ideas? Also if I just try and play the game ArmA 2 works but Operation Arrowhead does not work and gives a Bad serial number given in Setup error.

You have to run both arma and OA once before installing the mod. Make sure you ran as admin for EVERYTHING. If you installed with steam, I just go to the directory and run the arma_CO_dayz executable as admin, and then it started to work. I was having the same problem as you.

The way i see it you are getting basically two full games, ARMA and Dayz which is more fun than many 'full' games that i've spent far more on (and i have probably logged more hours into it as well). It's better value for the number of hours of entertainment you get than many AAA games. If you want to keep thinking of it as just paying for a 'mod' go ahead.. I have no desire to play arma, they should cut the price is all
If you do indeed like to play games of this nature you should have no trouble putting in at the very minimum 50hours into this game. You think that paying half a £1 for an hour of fun is to expensive? I'm almost certain that you've spent far more for far less in the past, i know i sure have.

He had basically everything, apart from NVG's. Problem was he had a buddy on the upper level and I could see his shadow above the ladder waiting for me to come up. Looted the guy, took his M4 CCO and got the hell out of there and logged out. Log back in, and I'm under the ladder unconscious and can see the shadow of the guy above me.
Felt entitled to ALT F4 and try another server later, that shits so unfair. Almost had a heart attack killing the guy in the complex, such an adrenaline rush! Alt F4 to save your skin is so lame... I can't wait till there's a timer before logging out like in MMOs. Yeah but I think I killed one of the server admin's/clan members. Since when I logged back into a different server later in the day I was unconscious for at least 4 minutes, with no blood loss, shock, broken bones or anything wrong at all. I've heard of admin's with access to the console can do stuff like this, on one of the OCUK servers (DE4) they would detect heli crash sites and lock the server when it spawned and only they could get the loot. I think its OK to ALT-F4 when you get knocked unconscious by someone using the console code just so they can safely come down the ladder to shoot you in the head and collect their friends gear. That is a feature implemented specifically to prevent people from escaping danger by logging out like small baby children. I didn't take any damage though. I had 12000 blood and nothing wrong whatsoever. Also I was knocked unconscious before I disconnected
Maybe inflicting PvP damage counts too? You shot a guy, then logged out to hide from his friends. When you logged in, you were unconscious. Is that accurate? If so, working as intended, I'd wager.

I've had the 'shock' thing happen to me seemingly randomly while running around. The way it triggers is either bugged or not fully known!
|
If you're low on blood, you will fall unconscious or disconnecting after taking PvP damage will cause you be unconscious for 3 minutes when you return.
|
Has anyone experienced not being able to pick up / drop items?

It's supposed to happen only when you get shot by another player or take a large amount of damage.

Guys join Teamliquid DayZ group, and get in the chat to team up ^^
|
Today, I experienced the most surreal and epic moment in Day Z history
Myself and two friends (we three were on voice comms) decided to meet up in Cherno; we looted random buildings, had the usual bandit hijinks for a while, and eventually made our way to the apartments. We took turns looting the apartments while one covered the stairs. I tried going prone on the first floor steps of the stairs and went into shock (some sort of bug) as a result. I professed some surprise at the random bug that occurred on voice chat, and my friend who was on the stairs above + extremely close to me decided to try the same thing and also got put into shock and was somehow bleeding.
At this point I turn to my right and I see a female survivor bleeding out RIGHT NEXT TO ME. My friend (who was literally within meters of me and who was ALSO bleeding out because of the bug) has a male survivor skin.
At this point I started freaking out on voice chat saying basically: "WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON!? WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU JUST TURN INTO A GIRL???? WHAT THE FUCK KIND OF BUG IS THIS, FUCK THIS GAME!"
I was just looking at the female survivor for like 3 seconds while she was bandaging herself and was being completely mind-fucked because I thought my friend was suddenly turned into a female survivor through some insane game glitch.
Suddenly I hear the voice of ChrispySC, the third bandito in our group saying "SHOOT THE BITCH!!!!!"
I proceeded to immediately unload a full clip of Makarov ammo into her face, killing her.
It was someone else who happened to just log in RIGHT beside me and happened to be bleeding AT THAT PRECISE MOMENT (as my friend was bleeding).

Last night in UK6, after having just respawned outside Elektro thanks to a G17 bullet to the head, I made my way in. There was talk of a meet up at the church and I could see the flare too so I ran towards it.
It was night time however, and when it is night time, I AM THE HUNTER. The firestation next to that church always seems to spawn WTFGUNS so I prodded into there first. I pick up an AK and proceed up the next steps.
A sniper? COOL. First time I've had one. Also found a silenced pistol.
It seemed the guys were still at the church so I left the firestation and climbed up the ladder on its side, to the roof. There I lay with my sniper. I had the shitty FPS bug going on so I did fail a bit but I managed to take a few potshots at a guy going toward the church. I loved the chat with "WHO'S SHOOTING" and what not and I carried on.
I may have lost sight of that guy but two others had taken cover behind the wall next to the church. I had one bullet left so I thought I'd just wait longer and use it and then collect back the AK.
I waited some more and then I see a head poke out. THERE I SEE IT. IN MY SIGHTS. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM right between the eyes. Chat erupted again and the word "roof" was mentioned by his partner who was then apparently murdered by the other guy I had been shooting at.
Anyway, I collected the AK and went to hospital roof. Some guy asked in chat who I was and that he had his sights on me so after a bit more of a wait, I see him on top of the school but can't get a shot off. I wait some more and see a guy crawling in the school. I pop him with a few shots and the roof guy shows his head again. Popped that mother fucker too and then looted them.
Anyway, logged on this morning on the roof and I think some guy logged on behind me. We both proceed to murder each other and now after getting stuck in loading, I had to close arma and now I can't remember the server I was in.
Still, that firestation is bound to have more good shit.
There was also a long standoff between me and this guy who gradually flared at me.

I can't really think of any other shooter out there that makes you remember each and every bullet you fire and each and every firefight you get into quite as much as this.
Imagine trying to recount all of your BF or CoD stories in the same way. It just doesn't work. I'm not knocking those games in any way, they are completely different and, in fact, calling this game a 'shooter' doesn't quite cover it either, but just for the sake of my point.
Every fight feels personal. Every death is frustrating (not unique to this game at all, I know). Every kill feels huge and nearly always carries some kind of emotional baggage with it (guilt, relief, anger, etc.).
I've been struggling with 10-15 fps at best recently, so I haven't been playing quite as much, but even just reading other people's stories makes me feel connected to the game-world.
Keep em coming!

this game is always so intense if you're going for kills at electro/cherno because you're always dying and having to start over from nothing, and you always need to outsmart/outplay people who are going to have better weapons + supplies than yourself.
(....or you can do the lame slow+patient route of slowly gathering loot from random spawns...YAWN <-- this also happens to take like 10x longer)

I'll have to play the devil's advocate here: while there are quite a lot of ways to play this game, the "fun" factor is relatively subjective. I oftentimes come across people who like to follow this plan: 1. Spawn 2. Go to electro / cherno 3. Kill people until you get killed 4. See: step 1
What do you think about that? Now I may be exaggerating but that looks like a call of duty deathmatch game to me. Not to mention the whole perma death thing becomes irrelevant.
Anyway, what I mean is : to each his own Some people actually enjoy exploring the map and gathering loot from random spawns.
