They said from the beginning there would be a cash shop. They were very careful not to go into the details of its content until after the CE were sold out, but still. During the first "outrage" of the CE, Zenimax pointed out that it would be possible to upgrade from the standard version to the CE, and obviously, it's going to be done through a cash shop.
Now, they're introducing a mount, and people rise back up again. It's both funny and sad. I am so sure this game is going to crash incredibly hard now. They're already selling hard content and locking races behind pay walls, within two months of release they'll be selling additional inventory bags, and after 4 months they'll be selling skins and stuff.
Then, after 10 to 12 months, the F2P model will arrive. A race, not races, and it looks exactly like the human counterpart everyone else has. Imperial style can be gotten by anyone, and the only thing different are the racials. Vanity shit, who cares about it. Actual content? Like dungeons and what not? Stop pulling stuff out of your ass no sign of that coming. And about the mount, you can get a mount by lvl20 by normal means. The average lvl when you get mounts in every other game. Except the ESO mount is not even close to the same lvl as in other MMOs. The thing sucks until you upgrade it at least 20x. It's also almost an annoyance to use beyond fast travelling when you don't want to wayshrine. No need to be so aggressive. I'm not the only one having that particular opinion, look at the thread. It'd be silly to deny that Zenimax's attitude with the game seems incredibly greedy. Exclusive CE content is one thing, a whole race (it's a race, more than just a style, it has racial traits and what not) is something else entirely. If you like the game and intend on playing it, more power to you, I'm not attacking you personally, but you don't need to go out and attack anyone who thinks ESO is adopting a greedy approach. You may think differently, but you can be civilized about it. I'm not attacking you, I was just setting your facts straight since you wanted to blow something into a big deal.
It's not exactly a matter of facts. More a matter of what one deems to be tolerable or not. They are locking content behind pay gates and adding a cash shop with a mount before the game is even released. Yes, the pay gate content is a race "with styles you can get in the game", but again, you can't acquire their racial traits.
Also, right now it's a horse in the cash shop, but who is to say it won't be more in the future? Like I said, the game isn't even released yet, and it's box price at $60 + $15 sub + cash shop with "additional services". All I'm saying is that I happen to find that greedy. Feel free to disagree, but please have the decency to not believe your opinion is an irrefutable fact.
I could still do without your aggressive demeanor, too. It is possible to disagree and be polite about it.

People being mad over a cash shop is just ignorance imo. Every MMO has one and it's the commonplace thing to do, and going to become even more relevant as we progress. The horse is the same horse everyone else can obtain early in the game, why do people keep bringing it up? They "pay-gated" a specific racial out of 9. I can agree with you about that being lame and they shouldn't do that. Everything else I'm fine with. Until they start selling xp boosts, items, dungeons, we don't need to start a mad panic and start claiming it's the end of the world.
Mostly just tired of people complaining about something they should expect to be. Just a little frustrated atm. None of what I originally said was my opinion, just stating what was actually available or not.

I don't think its unreasonable to be mad at eso double dipping into your pocket. I wholy think its unreasonable to expect it.
And its not just "some design" or "a horse". Its, in fact, a whole race with its own racial traits which you can play on any faction. In fact, you can play any race in any faction. What kind of clusterfuck wont that produce?! Think back to wow if people where allowed to play any race in any of the factions depending on whether they pay more or not. Not to mention people with the collectors edition will be able to get more loot with their treasure maps. If they where maps to where treasures might be then that would be fine, but apparently the treasure will ONLY spawn if you have those maps.
So in one swift stroke they've managed to fuck up the factions, put a paygate behind loot and a race, and they're planning on adding more things with an ingame cash shop.
Do you not see why this is bad for -everyone-?
I really wanted to play this game. But after what I've seen in the beta and now this bullshit, I've decided to wait until it becomes, inevitably, free to play.

I think the horse itself is fine, since it is as you said the same as the imperial horse. However this is a clear indication that there is plenty more to come, because there is no way they would implement an entire cash shop just for one item.

I fail to see how having a race be in a different fraction is game breaking. Omg you can play an Undead in the Dwarf starting area and be on alliance. What does that honestly change?
Forgot about the treasure maps so ya that's kinda bad. It's 4 maps so that could give you a slight advantage. A whole race, that looks identical to another race, but yes different racials. They aren't double dipping, you aren't forced to pay for anything extra and you can compete all the same as anyone else.
Understand people will always be mad at a cash shop and having items you can buy with real money and normally I'm against it. I hate how GW2 had boosts you could buy, not to mention repair/bank bots you could buy and special ink etc to color gear, that sucked. But then again GW2 was f2p (after you bought it) and their wasn't really an endgame to rush to so I was ok with it mostly.

Basically, it is just this development towards shameless greed that is disturbing. It used to be you bought a game, then you had the game. All of the game. Sometimes they released addons later on. Then you had stuff like WoW which had a subscription and you had to buy it. Or as a different model F2P stuff with a cash shop.
And along comes ESO which has a box, a subscription fee, a collectors edition with real ingame benefits, AND a cash shop. To be honest, i wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if they started selling map packs too.

Its about atmosphere, lore, and the whole feel of the game. Yes, Undead in Dwarf starting area and alliance would be incredibly bad. Its not much of a war between the races when factions involves everyone. Sorry you're failing to see the problem here.

Its about atmosphere, lore, and the whole feel of the game. Yes, Undead in Dwarf starting area and alliance would be incredibly bad. Its not much of a war between the races when factions involves everyone. Sorry you're failing to see the problem here.
I've never been one to care too much about lore and storylines. Long as the game is balanced and well made I don't care. I think I've actually paid attention to 3 quests during the beta and I'm lvl20. Otherwise I spawn click through and don't care. If you want to have a reason for why a certain race is with a certain fraction just rationalize it as them being an outcast and they were exiled and chose a different path, problem solved. I mean theres even a certain quest chain for why the Raptor guys (idk name) are being friendly to the Aldmeri Dominion and how they wanted to change sides.

There are actually a couple of outcasts around in the game as npcs. But it doesn't work out when half the population is.

It is pretty much directly connected to the pricing model. It's a box price + sub game, meaning that if you buy the game and pay the sub, you should have access to all the content in the game. But in ESO's case, you do not. I ask you then, what is the purpose of buying the game and paying a sub if you still have more purchases left besides the other subs to have access to the full game?
A night and day comparison would be FFXIV vs. ESO. Square Enix has stated that they are firmly against in-game cash shops. So, in the case of FFXIV, you buy the game (for $30 mind you), you pay the sub ($15 also), and then you actually do have access to the whole game. There is no way to get a race, a mount, a treasure map, or any special feature of any kind what-so-ever by making a purchase in the cash shop, since there isn't one. Granted, I personally believe FFXIV got many things right, but that's another topic.
The main point, and the main reason why people are not liking the whole cash shop + CE race thing, is that it sets a very, very bad precedent. The game isn't released and they're already pulling that kind of crap. It just reeks of greed, and it heavily implies that they will not stop there. As many people here, I'm pretty much convinced the game will eventually go F2P. No matter how good of a game you have, you can't sustain it for long with such a greedy business model.

I am blown away that people are defending anything about this game. Let alone something like a cash shop and CE only race. Among the already terrible gameplay, graphics, questing, etc. you still think it's ok to double charge things? Lol. No wonder video games are being made with only 4 maps and releasing 40 pay to get DLC packs with 2 maps each. People will just spend money on anything.
|
I guess I'll just hold my tongue and see how the game does. I'm also on the side thinking it will go f2p at some point. I'm also fairly sure it will do better than people think.
It's a companies job to make money. If this is how they see the best way of doing it than so be it. If it fails then it set's a precedent to not do it. But I'm sure enough people are going to pre-order or use the cash shop to warrant it being a good idea from their end. Just need to find a good common ground which doesn't intrude too much onto either side. But then again, it's up to the masses to decide.

I played the beta and I have to say I am thoroughly disappointed. I played Skyrim too when it came out and liked it even though I never played the series before.
From the very beginning they bombard you with some souls-otherworld-godswannabeconquerors bullshit which really put me off because it seems to me they want this game to be epic, but apparently they don't know that ''epic'' doesn't mean everything blown out of proportion. Skyrim, even though had that cheese story about dragonborns, wasn't even that bad storywise.
The graphics were only slightly better than non-modded Skyrim, but the world as a whole has much less details, everything is much more spaced and characters you meet are blank. The enemies are too weak and the fight isn't fluid at all, it's I hit you, you hit me and then repeat. Considering they are making an MMO they could've improved the fight from the one we see in Skyrim. What's unforgiving is that everything seems randomly thrown around. At the very beginning you have a place. when you exit the prison, where, you have ''good guys'' singing around the fire, then few feet apart you have an enemy just standing, and some people dying or transforming into zombies, then you have some prisons. Nonsense.
When you consider that you have to pay for the game and then pay a subscription fee on top of that it seems that the game wants to make money on the back of Skyrim's glory, nothing more. Some free MMO's were much more enjoyable.

Unless I am mistaken the cash shop is only for cosmetics right? I don't know to much about it but don't care for it as it doesn't effect me at all. It doesn't force me to pay for anything and it won't make me level up faster or anything. So who cares, I have always wondered how people can spend money on it, but people do and they enjoy it which is their right if that's what they enjoy.
The graphics are far from terrible and I find the gameplay fun. A fun fact, your opinion doesn't = fact. People can enjoy a game you don't enjoy and they do.
The only thing I agree with your silly post is imperials only being for CE. Otherwise I think you are just a typical ignorant hater who can't stand that people can enjoy a game you don't. It's like me and my opinion on LoL/Dota/etc, I find them boring and can't enjoy it to save my life, but it's just my opinion and obviously not a fact.

I am ignorant because I think the gameplay is shit? I'm ignorant because the graphics look like d2? I'm ignorant because I believe something which you have to buy, then pay monthly on top of that shouldnt have ANYTHING else to purchase becuase you're already paying out the ass just for access to the game? Sorry you sound like a typical fanboy. See how easy it is to just come up with shit out of your ass and dismiss people as "haters" when they have fair points? A majority of people agree the gameplay is bad. A majority of people agree that the graphics are trash. If you don't, that's fine. It's your money spend it how you want. I have no will, or want to support ANYTHING that a game company does to try and squeeze more money out of you. I hate cash shops, whether the game is f2p or not. I would rather buy the full game for 60 dollars then get nickle and dimed in the cash shop for 200 dollars for the same shit. I do not think that when I pay 15 dollars a month for a game, I should have to pay more for anything. The entirety of the game should be unlocked. Why is that ignorant? That I want my money to actually you know...pay for the game. I don't care if it's as simple as unlocking a different color of grass. The fact is they are trying to squeeze money out of you. And they are going to do it simply because it has "Elder scrolls" attached to the name. Keep defending it though, this is why the video game market is saturated with DLC after DLC after half release. It's because people will eat that shit up. It's terrible. It's not ignorant to dislike it.

I can't think of the last thread that saw the same level of arguing and tension as this one. Anyway opinions on a cash store aside, my time with the beta has left me unimpressed. Any mmo I've ever ended up spending a good amount of time on always left me wanting more during the climb to max level. This game there just doesn't seem to be anything down the road on the skill system that I would be excited about.

Its natural for a successful series like Elder Scrolls to have polarised opinions about the move to an MMO. Add in high expectation and a disappointing game shown sofar (for a fair few people anyway) it leads to discussions :p

The game is controversial because it was trying to do an impossible balancing act. I actually quite like it, as MMOs go, though I'm certainly not dropping everything for it. It's fun, though the <10 level content is quite spare. Cyrodiil is great, the quests are fun, and its an Elder Scrolls game I can play with friends. Sure there's missing stuff, but I'll pay the sub for a while with the game as is.
But there are certainly a lot of folks who wanted Skyrim 2, or TES:VI, or WOW 2.0, and all those people are disappointed, resulting in a lot of the flame. (the people who wanted DaoC 2 seem happiest of those wanting a continuation of another game).
There will be a TES:VI, this isn't it. And that's fine.
