PlayStation Vita - The World Is In Play
Here's an Article that describes what the PlayStation Vita is: Article by TIME, Matt Peckham
Everything You Need to Know About the PlayStation Vita
We’re just a few weeks out from Sony’s U.S. PlayStation Vita launch, so now’s a great time to review what it is, how it works, what it’ll cost, what’s under the hood and what you’ll probably need to buy a la carte. Ready, set…
What’s a ‘PS Vita’?
A device formerly known as NGP, or “Next Generation Portable.” Sony announced this successor to its PlayStation Portable dedicated gaming handheld on January 27, 2011 (it had been rumored for months) with that unsightly codename. Six months later at E3 2011, the company revealed the device’s much smoother name would be “PlayStation Vita” (the Latin word vita means “life”).
What’s So Special About It, Design-Wise?
The Vita retains the PlayStation Portable’s hockey-rink-style shape, but it’s slightly wider and taller. That’s to accommodate the super-sized 5-inch, 960 x 544 pixel, OLED capacitive multi-touch screen capable of displaying up to 16.7 million colors. By comparison, the Nintendo 3DS’s top screen is 3.53 inches, the PSP’s screen is 3.8 inches and the Galaxy Nexus smartphone’s screen is 4.65 inches (the only smartphone I’m aware of with a 5-inch or greater screen today is Samsung’s unreleased-in-the-U.S. Galaxy Note). The spec to pay attention to here is OLED (organic light-emitting diode), which means the Vita doesn’t need a backlight, thus improving contrast ratios and allowing for the display to be housed in a thinner, lighter design (the Vita weighs just 260g — that’s 20g less than the original PSP).
While Sony’s eschewing 3DS-style features like stereoscopic 3D (I say wisely) or dual screens, their contribution to the “look, innovation!” pool is the Vita’s rear capacitive multi-touch pad, a back panel wallpapered in Sony’s trademark face button symbols that your fingers can “tap” while wrapped around the handheld. You can use the rear pad to “shoot” the ball in a Vita game like FIFA Soccer, for instance, or to “zoom” the sniper rifle in a game like Uncharted: Golden Abyss. Oh, and the unit includes Sony’s six-axis motion-sensing system (a three-axis gyroscope plus a three-axis accelerometer).
In the “standard features” department, the Vita includes both front and rear facing VGA (640 x 480) cameras, stereo speakers, a microphone, a d-pad and four PS-style face buttons, Sony’s classic PlayStation button, “start,” “select” and volume buttons, a rechargeable (non-removable) Lithium-ion battery and built-in Wi-Fi (3G + GPS optional). Slot-wise, you’ve got a place to stick in PS Vita game cards, one for memory cards (the Vita lacks inbuilt storage memory), a SIM card slot (3G, GPS), a headset jack, a multi-use port (mini-USB) and an accessory port.
The Vita also includes dual analog sticks, and by “sticks,” I mean actual raised control columns with convex-shaped grips (contrast with the flush nubs on the PSP and 3DS). While Nintendo plans to sell a cradle-style peripheral for the 3DS that adds a right-hand joystick, the Vita’s the only gaming handheld on the block with dual analog sticks built-in.
What’s Under the Hood?
The Vita employs an ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore processor and a PowerVR SGX543MP4+ GPU. To put that in context, Apple’s A5 processor (used in the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S) is based on ARM’s Cortex-A9 core architecture, and you’ll also find the dual core version of PowerVR’s SGX543MP technology in those devices (the ’4′ in the Vita’s GPU indicates the quad-core version, and the ‘+’ refers to features designed specifically for Sony).
How powerful is it really? Sony’s made several comparisons to the PlayStation 3. They don’t mean spec-for-spec, of course, just that the Vita’s games are expected to look much like PS3 games, detail-wise.
What Colors Does It Come In?
Sony’s offering the Vita in one color only at launch: “Crystal Black.”
Joystiq: Review: PlayStation Vita [updated for US launch] (No Score):
"The only consideration that really matters for a game system is its capacity to play games, and in that regard the PlayStation Vita is a resounding success. It offers the most power, the widest variety of input methods, and the most convenient method of getting new games, of any handheld system in history." http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/13/playstation-vita-review/

A lot of titles are missing please suggest some that I don't know of and I will update this thread

Sure, you can be as closed minded as that. On the other hand, the Vita has just as much potential as the 3DS (I favored the 3DS before as well but when you try it out and get into it the Vita is much more appealing. I really hope it does well. Sony has taken larger strides to stop piracy, also many other great titles are getting released for the Vita. I'm not finished updating this and I will add those future titles as well. It really is a great device.
already got it, anyone got any questions, just ask me.
I give it a 9 out of 10 as well, the only flaw imo is that content transfer thing. But damn oh damn, gravity rush defines how amazing the vita can be if the motion control is utilised well
ninja gaiden is coming out soon MGS HD remake, FFX remake, bioshock, street fighter x Tekken, so many good games coming
Yikes, 0 RPGs in the near future. I'm probably going to wait a long while before getting these. The games I like are rarely launch games anyways. I'm actually still going through some DS and PSP backlog of RPGs.
ugh only handheld that was ever good to me was gameboy color. DS/psp was so bleh and i watched the whole vita thing at E3, wasnt very impressive for me

persona 4 is coming out, now that's a seriously awesome rpg

P3P is what I got the PSP for last year. I played it for the female MC. Persona 4 doesn't seem to be that different to me and I liked P3's story better. I guess it depends how many new goodies the portable version is going to have. 5 is what I'm really waiting for, though that's not going to be on a handheld yet.
Can't say I'm really all that interested in handhelds since the dissapointment that was the PSP. It's cool that you can listen to music or watch videos, but the games were pretty bad imo.
vita is actually really cool on the go since it has lots of old and probably soon new jrpg/srpgs ! still to expensive and thats why my n3ds is good enough :D
edit : really dont care about all those ps3 titles made for the vita tho.. who wants to play a shooter or anything on a console :S

P4 golden has quite a lot of add ons, even more than the ones for p3 my gf loves Persona and she said 4 is better because of the gameplay improvement

Sure. Maybe I'll buy it if good games comes out. On the PSP I only enjoyed LocoRoco and Patapon. What a disappointing console

The portable version of Persona 3 contained almost all of the gameplay improvements they made to 4. I just liked the playable characters and story better in 3. I couldn't find out what new things they added to P4: Golden. The only major one is the new character and even the wiki wasn't sure whether she would be playable or not.

they added a lot more voice acting, almost 1.5 times more than the original one new OP new character voiced by one of the most popular japanese voice actor and you can earn motorcycle lincence and it can create new events and also be useful in combat also got new evolution for some characters' persona (so far only one is known)

Oh nice. That's quite a few more additions. Hopefully, there's more. I wonder if they're going to change stuff like Yoshimitsu's Hassou Tobi.
I have a PSP, used mainly for emulation (PS1 and lower) and portable internet. It seems Vita is harder to hack though. But playing PS2 games on a handheld sounds appealing. I'm a bit concerned about the battery though.
Bought a PSP during the first month or so (used, lol). I still have the free UMDs to come with it which reminds me of painful failure with Sony handhelds...
I still liked my PSP but that's becuse I flashed it and had full access to custom firmwares, including 16-32 Bit emulation. Played through a bunch of my old PSX favorites on it but only really love Lumines, Loco Roco and maybe half a dozen other games actually made for it. Software sells hardware so let's wait and see. I can see this being very succesful from the pure specs. Plus, it comes out on my birthday^^
Quick question, can you somehow get the signal on your TV? Considering its power that might be pretty cool.
when ppl crack it so you don' have to use their sd cards and you can use your own, I will get one. $40 for a 8gb sd card! HA! i have several 16 and 32 gb sd cards from my psp 1000
Another failed idea sony. Just give up on the handhelds and make phones. Cost me 100$ in games on my phone and i have em all, why would i spend another 300$ and then buy games for somthing i have on my phone.? Herp derp vista was a stupid idea on the drawing bord. Consols either need to come into the 21st century or die.
right now there aren't many cool games on the system. the new lumines looks awesome but that's about it. sound shapes may be real cool down the line whenever that comes out. although both of these games could be on PSN or even PSP and be fine lol
I think the vita has really big potential with so many control options, it's just a matter of if a developer will make a game that is fun and utilizes these features well (IE a good game that can only be played well on the vita). sony publishes a shitload of first party games for the PSP/vita, I just wish they would use original IPs that are designed around the system instead of trying to squeeze gimmicks onto PS3 franchises (such as with uncharted). there are a lot of first party developers from sony that could make really cool games for the vita if given the chance, it's just a matter of if they will.
btw i dont like sport games at all but i thought the way the fifa game on vita uses the back touch is really cool. basically the back touch screen represents the goal, and wherever you are touching is where your player will shoot the ball toward when you shoot.
i think the system is definitely the better designed handheld compared to the 3DS, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see what sort of games come out on the system. there's definitely a niche that can exist for near-console fidelity games that take advantage of the vita's touch screens and stuff for a cheaper price/budget than actual console games, but i dont want to play just a low budget ps3 game with a bunch of gimmicks tacked on for nearly the same price as a real ps3 game.
I watched giantbomb's stream where they reviewed the vita and played pretty much every game available at launch. While the console itself looks decent (honestly the OS looks lack luster and nothing really screams I WANT IT, at least to me..), the games look god awful. I realize these are launch titles and there will be a wider selection later.. but christ almighty.. remakes, terrible games that look almost like iphone/android ports (that will ultimately be purchased because theres nothing else available) and maybe 1 or 2 that look decent.
Wish it was different, but I felt like i almost had to force myself to play my original PSP over the years to justify my purchase. The vita looks like itll be more of the same from sony.
didn't expect this post to be so negative, so I'll add this in: The hardware itself does look nice. The screen looks amazing (albeit the touchscreen doesn't look as responsive as some quality smart phones these days *from what I saw after watching giantbomb use it for nearly 3 hours), D-pad looks 100x better than its predecessor (especially for any fighting/platform games!), dual analog sticks (FINALLY), though slightly smaller buttons (doesn't look like that would be a problem). The back touch feature seems.. weird to me. Doesn't appear that many, or any game developers really know what to make of it. Screen touch within games seemed almost useless except as a novelty feature.
anywho, i'm still excited to see what comes out of this system
Got mine in Dec when I was on a trip to HK. Not sure how terrible the system was selling, but a month and a half ago I brought back 3 vitas and reselling it recovered my flight expenses...
Similar to PS3, I think vita is something people will eventually get. The Vita, imo, packs a lot more than the 3DS.
Sooner or later people will start making 3rd party mem cards for the Vita. Games are also on the expensive side...
There was a previous thread that I made about this a while ago, but this one is more recent and updated so no matter . Anyhow, I'm definitely getting a Vita. Love handhelds.

oh come on. you have to admit it's better than the 3DS's launch lineup.

Selling 20k a week compared to PSP 60k, original DS 60k and 3DS 240k. I'm no 3DS fan but if nothing changes it's won Japan more than PS3>360 did.
3DS had monster hunter 3G and also they are going to have love plus. Vita still lacks the big japanese hits like those, though gravity rush is selling pretty well apparently. Just wait till we get yakuza and that ninja gaiden, probably will boost the sales by quite a lot
I bought a PSP and regretted it. Wound up selling it. I will probably stick to Nintendo portables, especially so long as the Pokemon universe is still around.
apparently gravity rush got a like 38/40 at famitsu, which is really good. I know the basic premise of the game and saw the TGS gameplay, butg that was only like 3 minutes of gameplay lol. I wonder what that game is actually like and why famitsu likes it so much. sometimes famitsu gives really shitty games good scores, but usually they are a good indication of the quality of a game.
Havent used portables since gameboy color or something so completly out of the loop. Anyway, if you have purchased PS3 games from the PSN Store can you play them on the Vita? I'm not just talking about connecting it to the PS3 but on the go? Also, what about PS3 games you got on discs anyway to play those on Vita? If I'd buy one I'd probably do it if there were lots of Final Fantasy titles which I can't seem to find when I googled around a bit earlier, anyone knows? Also I checked a couple "most booked games" list and they all seem to be somewhat crap games? For example: http://www.game.se/acatalog/PS_Vita.html - I realize it's a new system but what are some of the best titles it will have? Thanks!
I've had this since December (Japanese version) and I can tell you it is definitely worth it. The games that are in English look pretty bad, but the games coming out in the Japanese market are quite good and fun to play. :D
for those shocked by the lack of the old psp and ps1 games they are currently still converting them to be able to emulate
from wired q & a with Sony's Shuhei Yoshida
The goal was, we get all PSP downloadable games to work on PS Vita, and the PS1 games to work on PS Vita. From a PSP emu standpoint, we are almost there. Ninety-plus percent of PSP PSN games are already on the Japanese store to download. And the team is focusing on getting the U.S. and European launch as good in terms of coverage of the PSP titles on the store. So that’s the focus. Because of that, we are really trying for a high percent of the PSP games to go on the PS Vita for launch in the U.S. and Europe. After that we will shift focus to get PS1 games on PS Vita.
can I play the article I bought in the psn store on this? like FF VII and FF IX, I bought it to replay those awesome games but it's not very tempting on my ps3 at home on a big tv but on the road or during classes @ university would be awesome^
