I made this thread since I've started noticing quite a few crossovers from my old favorite progamers in the current eSports scene.
I wanted to have a place for people to post an old favorite, and see if the community knows anything about what the player is currently doing, whether they've retired from eSports, or are playing another game.
I knew that Nadagast and Huk played both SC and WoW, but I've seen a few other names pop up that I had no idea- a few quick examples:
Noxn: One of the best Shadowpriests of all time, now playing SC2 at a gm level Rambo: Is the LoL player the same ex-3D allstar?
So, I was curious, what are the other oldguard progamers doing? The Ksharp, HeatoN, SpawN, Knoxville, etc.
Anyone heard of icefox? Oh man hoodrych is awesome I loved his videos and same with Akrioss~ I can only remember Celex and Glickz at the top of my head but there a lot that I know of but just can't remember -.-
Oh yeah I remember that. They already declared one team the winner and started the award ceremony. Then aAa complained and one of the refs saw they were like 10 seconds overtime. So they had to replay the last game and aAa won.
CS players are still at it at a high level with a decent amount of tournaments, not nearly as exclusive as sc2 of course. HeatoN, SpawN and co. mostly make gaming gear and such or do advertisements of them like in the IEM you may have seen them in a few advertisements. I finally made an account yay! been watching streams and lurking for so long... :D
rofl Serennia, wasn't he a legendary hunter/dk whiner aswell or something?
Serennia played whatever was overpowered as fuck in WoW.
He went from Warrior S2 - S3, Druid S3-S4, Deathknight S5-S6.
This kid was notorious in wow for doing everything from shitting in peoples' shirts instead of using the bathroom, stealing ipods, and just in general being a complete sociopathic compulsive liar.
Ciderhelm from TankSpot plays LoL now, he posts videos of it on his youtube account. Not sure if he still plays WoW but I've heard friends say he quit because he was bored/whatnot.

Serennia had some real problems. From raging during tournaments, to stealing iPods, to just being, as cydial said, a total sociopathic compulsive liar.

I keed, I always liked coL.Black. Especially that one finals against... I can't remember... maybe Dignitas, where in the final game the opponents swapped to TSG on Blade's Edge, and coL blew up the DK before they even crossed the bridge lol.

Oh man, I can't believe Orangemarmalade isn't a top SC2 pro right now. Such micro.
Enigmz team outplayed Col.Red by far, Col.Red had a comb that outright hardcounter them, but still they lose(and they lost, fair and square due to the rules).

And I'd really have to rewatch the match to know which team played better, since there was huge USA vs Euro bias in pretty much everyone's report on what happened >.>
I have played Method from CS in sc2 ladder match.. I have also played a couple more cs pros in sc2 ladder matches I will think of there names later and edit it. One was Glockateer from CSS and the other was Cuhz from DIE in cs... I know that DARK from NoA and xeqtr from NoA play sc2. Alot of the pros I know moved to HON Alot of team WEW and Turmoil went to HON.

He played a Hunter on Warsong (I believe) named Avatar, before he bought the Serennia account. He was the hunter that tanked Nef. He also stole from his guild and lied about loot drops so he could take them after people left the instance, and the rest of his guild absolutely hated him. That's why when they decided to transfer to a newer server, they tricked him into transferring to the wrong server, while they went to a different one.
Abandoned by his guild, bought the account of a warrior on BDF and was let go by FH for being a useless douche, and then became Serennia.
The only thing that's surprising about that is Serennia didn't have the balls to challenge people in real life, but I'm glad he got what was coming.

Swifty still plays, his still pretty far up his own a** and making videos. Most of them feature his awesome and extreme lifestyle that he wishes to portray in clips at the beginning. He's made videos for some other games too. He really only touches on basic strategies but you would think they are uber secret or phenomenally good by the way he talks about them. Yes thats avatar. He was also an awful hunter.
Later he moved to my guild (Impervious) and we kicked him out after he couldnt stop being himself. Healing that guy was such a misery.
F^Holden from clan Forsaken. I remember him from CAL-I season 6??? or so. He's a professional football player now playing for Bolton Wanderers in the EPL and the US National Team.
Well, I only know of Vurtne and Drakedog to actually qualify for the progaming part, but that's because I mainly played a Lock in WoW and they were super good. They did not really earn money from WoW I think, but their level of play was great at the time. Drakedog was all the shit back in 2006. And Vurtne was pretty damn impressive with how he slaughtered ppl lol.
Drakedog was so awesome to watch. If you don't know, go check Drakedog 4, it's on Youtube. At the very beginning there's a fight against a Retribution paladin. Now for those who don't know, Ret paladins were pretty much the laughing stock in terms of PvP. Their damage output compared to other classes were pathetic, but they could heal and survive longer.
Anyway, in that fight he gave DD a run for his money. DD killed him just barely, had to use almost all his CD. It was a very fun fight to watch, as how terrible that class was in Vanilla.
Koreans man. Doesn't matter it's Sc or anything, they know how to tear em up.

Just gonna put a firm end to these beliefs:
Being someone who actually saw it, and also followed the huge cluster-fuck that was the thread on AJ (WoW forum) - aAa had won the game on DMG several minutes before they died. It wasn't seconds, it was MINUTES. The seconds were just a rumour / failcommunication. :p So no drama there, if I remember correctly.
I know of several people who play other games who sued to be pro in wow / cs =P Can't mention them though or they'll murder me o0
isnt hydra and kalamist playing on arena tournament ? Zilea still plays WoW and SC2 - Master Grim is playing SC2 - Master Neilyo - still playing WoW Pookz - still WoW
It's kind of sad to be a pro gamer with the way the masses move from game to game. From Quake to CS to WC3, to WoW, Halo to COD etc. etc. One minute everyone supports you, the tournaments, the fans, the big organizations and then bam out of nowhere everyone is gone, tournaments drop you, fans don't care about you. They are all onto a new game calling the game you're a pro at all sorts of negative names and praising the new game they are all hyped up over. Were seeing it now with League of Legends and all the pros of LoL will be left in the dark with their hands in the air once the collective drones move onto the next big "esport" game.
Wonder if orangemarmalade and numberone are playing Sc2? Honestly they were the only good players in wow and leagues above every other "tournnament player"

Blizzard killed competitive WoW with rated battlegrounds and "balancing" for them. They for the most part were just sick of trying to balance a game that could not be balanced, there are just too many abilities. Furthermore the only reason WoW ever had a competitive scene with sponsors and a place at MLG was because there were 12 million people playing it. Valve and Riot's games only have competitive modes, and WoW's was an experiment that failed. If I remember correctly they even said that "arena was a mistake" right before they killed it in Cata.

I understand why something like WoW arena was killed. That's not really my point though. Pro gamers from different games such as CS, Quake, Halo even Brood War, and it will happen with League of Legends in the future, all take the same fall because of the way people move from game to game.

Not really true.
What was a mistake was attempting to balance for PvE, RBG's and Arena all at the same time.
For people to hate on WoW pro's they'd have to also ignore GW1, which was one of the first big eSports.
If WoW had just made a PvP only game, and only balanced for that, it would have been really fun and competitive. But as it was, some retarded raid change would break the entire competitive meta, and that is just completely unacceptable for a competitive game.

The comps Vileroze played was never about survivability or damage, just ridiculous amounts of CC his comps could pull off during S8.
Also you gotta remember since vile never intended to play in tournies he could use all the addons he wanted to basically play for him, which none of the tournament players did because they played without addons because that's how you had to play in tournaments. But yeah comparing a ladder player to a tournament player (say, vileroze to orangemarmalade) is dumb, that's like comparing deezer or destiny (ladder players) to idra or huk (tournament players)

the same comp that had over a 70% representation in game, so it wasn't like some hardcounter to the super comp that allowed it, it was playing the mirror match with every disadvantage possible and winning 9 out of 10 times

Sorry for the depressing post.
I wouldn't say this entirely. Progaming does change scenes quickly tho, but its more about genre than game.
Starcraft has been huge for a while, and the transition between BW and SC2 isn't huge. It would probably behoove the RTS community to just all play SC2 (BW vs SC2 aside, just as a spectator sports SC2 is easier to watch, prettier, etc) from a viewership standpoint.
MOBAs are the hot new thing, and I doubt that, if LoL faill, top LoL pros will have any difficulty changing games to whatever new MOBA is hot.
Really, FPS is the most fragmented community (because console gamers are so cute. They think they're people!)

Destiny is still just a ladder player because he does almost nothing but ladder and stream, rarely goes to tournaments, and when he does doesn't get very far. But that's not really what this is about, if you're a big fan of destiny and want to pretend like he's more than a ladder player, then you can pretend I used someone else as an example instead of him, like say combatex or some other ladder player.

It wasn't just about the abilities.
Blizzard attempted to balance PvE/PvP at the same time. With the way the mechanics work for both of those things that is pretty much impossible if you're talking about simple abilities. However, with nine different classes, each with 20 some odd abilities to balance, and a full gear loadout to balance...yea it's never happening.
If WoW had just stayed the way it was, and Blizzard had made a new game based on WoW for PvP and balanced around it then you would have had a pretty strong competitive game. WoW PvP is pretty comnplex at the high levels, it was just impossible to balance properly.
A lot of European Counter-Strike players are still playing, but North America is pretty much dead. I haven't followed the CS 1.6 scene since 2009, but I do check HLTV.org now and then. I think CS:GO will revive the North American scene a little since retired players such as method, Volcano, etc have been playing it. Valve sent out a lot of beta keys for North American CS 1.6 and CS:S former and current pros. Last time I checked (like others have mentioned), SpawN and HeatoN are working for Zowie and the EC1, EC2, and AM were designed and tested by them. I think moto of Team 3D worked (or still working) at QPAD, but there hasn't been any information on him. I know that method and Volcano plays CS 1.6 and CS:S now and then, but it seems that they are just playing a mix of games for fun or semi-competitively.

WoW used to have a scene and it used to be a featured game at MLG. Imo, it was pretty bad. Nothing more than FOTM bandwagoning. Whatever composition was the FOTM won whatever tournament was going on at the time. As for LoL, they have a $5,000,000 prize pool spread out through the season so there's your answer.

I follow the CS scene non-stop since 2005, the european CS scene has almost every single pro from 2006 till now still playing, the scene is still huge outside the US.
About the oldies, I know cogu retired to play football soccer in Qatar but returned to brazil to play the CGS for Rio Siniestro, then joined Mibr and after a losing streak he retired together with his pal KIKOOO. Johnny R is working for the ESL (or Steelseries, can't remember which exactly). Ola 'Element' Moum retired after an unexpected third place on the WCG 2008, to me this guy was the CS dream made flesh. XeqtR tried to go pro in DotA, played for mouz around 2007, saw him as stand-in but that didn't work out. Shaguar is now a (american) football commentator. Snajdan made some top 3/4 sweden teams the last couple of years, he's still got his in-game leader skills, he's probably inactive atm. prb and real keep playing gathers and for norway in the clanbase nations cup. Can't remember more old CS stars :D
I'm really impressed with so many people here knowing about old CS pros. TL.net should open a CS section!

Flyn plays arena tournaments @ lvl 80 in WoW still, Heaton is diamond~ sc2 and plays wow at a high level, kalimist still plays wow, so does hydra (hydra is masters in sc2 too)
aAa v col.red was LSD v MLS (with Sodah on priest for the last game)
Wait.. so Flyn is playing WotLK on custom servers? o_o
rofl Serennia, wasn't he a legendary hunter/dk whiner aswell or something?
LOL omg, I played on warsong during vanilla, I remember him so clearly, did world bosses like kazzak and dragons with him sometimes. Was a douchebag x100000 but he knew how to lead a raid properly. Funny to see him getting raged at.
2011-08-08 20:33:39 No :0 i used to ,and very loved it but i dont play on these days
Its very fun to see the GSL sometimes !
Paperkat is actually at University in my city, but doesn't play/follow esports at all. Is SK ocelote the same guy? I thought it was just a coincidence that they had the same name. Orly, as mentioned, is a high level zerg in SC2. I know the old SK US WoW team played some SC2 for a while but never got seriously into it as far as i know. I haven't spoken to Realz in a long time though, so that might have changed.

Probably playing WoW still. I remember him and his team (EYE) won CPL and a couple of months later, he quit CS because of WoW. He tried making a come back along with old school pros like ScreaM, but it never worked.
Oh man this thread bringing up all kinds of nostalgia! I loved watching all the rogue pvp movies; Buddhist, Reckful, Woundman, Neilyo, Ming (lol), etc - I think I actually still have some on my hd - they really helped me improve my rogue-skillz. I'd have been interested if more of them got into SC2 to see how their skill tranferred.

I recently beat a zerg named HeatoN in diamond I asked if he was the CS one and he said he wasn't sure (??) so maybe we have both met a fake one.
Saw method in the ESEA LAN finals the last 2 years. Volcano is playing Source for Team Dynamic. bsl was europe's coach in the match USA vs Europe in IEM New York. sunman is playing Source for 3DMAX. fRoD and storm keep playing 1.6 they are in CheckSix.zet returned to 1.6 after his run with coL on the CGS, his last title was Dreamhack Summer with MYM, he's retired. walle chose to retire after getting kicked by SK. Tentpole is going to the gym very often, the same with jaegarn. You just brought up so many names from my teenage CS days. Shit, I had to watch the old zex and eol movies. I looked up shaguar, according to his twitter he is a poker pro now though.

I played on BDF and my guild <SPAM> merged with his and we became <Just Wipe>. In a few weeks we went from being top 10 to being right behind <Forgotten Heroes> in progression. We cleared all the way up to 4 horsemen and C'thun but then I think the guild fell apart.
He did buy a a warrior on BDF but the guy who bought Avatar actually was in our guild and raided with us and sometimes they would hop on the others character in a given fight if one of them knew how to play that class better on it or whatever.
He was pretty fucking crazy. He was raid leader (obv) and if you were on the waiting list (had 5-10 ppl on waiting list every night) he would put you in your own channel in vent and you had to sit outside of the dungeon NOT AFK because he would message you in the game if your spot was open, and if you didn't respond within like 30 seconds you lost your spot, so you couldn't even like tab out unless you had a whisper alarm.
If you made 1 mistake in a raid that caused you or others to die (very easily in vanilla WoW...not so much anymore) then you would get kicked out of the raid and put on the waiting list lol.
I was Haga if anyone on BDF remembers my dwarf hunter xD
