He draws up a lot of really good offensive plays. He's not a major innovator like lets say, Rick Adelman but he does very well with what he has. Many people point to having Lebron James but Spo really proved his worth in 2009 and 2010. When Miami was tanking and Wade was pissed Spo had that shit team playing way above their level on both sides of the ball. When Miami lost to Boston 4-1 in 2010 not many people remember how close those games were and how awful Miami was outside of Wade. Point blank given the cast he had he over achieved. Another major selling point is his defensive coaching is very good. Miami doesn't have a core of super rebounding bigs but they do have Lebron and Wade. One of the biggest differences since Lebron came is that Wade has to be a better rebounder due to not having anyone outside of Haslem (who's sketchy) dominate it at their position. So Miami gang rebounds a lot and normally this would leave you open to tip out rebounds (which happens against them often) and fast break destruction when you try to hog offensive boards. Somehow, Miami even when the ball is tipped out still gets back in great defensive position in a snap AND they don't get beaten down in transition on the other end. There are also things like developing young players, how you run your practices, and how well you work your guys. Spo despite the criticism from armchair bloggers, has never as far as I know been bad mouthed by anyone that's ever been a part of the Heat organization or even the entire NBA. In his relatively few years of coaching I don't think I've ever seen him have a really disastrous stretch or lose his team.

It helps that he has two of the league's best players, but he still has to put the systems in place to give them the best opportunity to win--and I think he does a pretty good job of that.

Well, I don't think this is entirely fair on D'Antoni. Given the right players I think he's one of the better coaches in the NBA too. The Phoenix teams he coached were strong, highly entertaining teams for a number of years. He was never able to quite get over the Spurs/Lakers humps. As positive a start as Woodson has had in NYC, I don't think there are any coaches that can salvage that situation. NYC is more a case of front office failure than coaching problems.

This is true, but Spo did pretty well with Miami pre Bosh/LeBron when he basically had Wade, Beasley and Haslem as his three best players. He does have some pedigree.
