Im glad We tried to launch early, but due to server hosting issues (which were rushed, I must admit) we are going through some growing pains. New server tomorrow.
Everyone still had a blast and tons of laughs on the server though. So all is not lost
The old server is still up for everyone to have some fun with, its currently hosting a HUGE water-freak world that we ended up with.

im in that screenshot. Im famous!!!
edit: also, this was almost fun with stupid lag, so w/o lag it should be epic!!!!

Some guy named "Mirotox" (I think) completely destroyed the TL Mafia area. He said "eat my right wood," started attacking me, and whenever I try to go into the server I just get the empty menu background (dirt blocks) with no text or buttons.

Next time call for some help from other factions. Most factions are more than capable of helping you... at a cost.
Or contact the "Sentinels" and we'll look into it.

I can't get onto the server at all. He was probably hacking.

Factions are useful even if you plan on doing most of your stuff by yourself. Most factions will let you in even if you are not going to do much with it.
So...drowning wheat farms is a go then?

If you can pull that off. Go for it.

Okay thanks. Though I guess redstone might be more useful through the bow and arrow.... hmmm...

I toned down the redstone arrows a tad. They no longer fire nearly as fast.

When the new server comes up tomorrow is it a reset map, or the one that was saved before the server went down?
(I don't mind either way, the start was hella fun)

When you claim land does it clam that land beneath it.
For example could I set up a shop at the surface and an underground fortress below to store personal goods?

how can you tell what land you claimed? It seemed kinda flukey when I was claiming. It would suck if you accidently had part of your wall not claimed.

This is correct. Claiming land claims the entire chunk (16x16x128) that you are standing in.

My start was a bit rocky. Connecting from Europe a bit of lag was to be expected but i still set out towards the desert city full of hope.
I traveled across the road until i passed out of the straight road and decided to claim some land for my faction (wich was just me) just before the desert started.
I formed the "Merchant Guild" and claimed some land. It didn't take long before i noticed someone with a sword watching me make my humble start.
Irony had it that literally adjacent to my Merchant Guild land was another faction named VTC or the Valgur Trading Company. Irony soon met iron as upset owner of said VTC decided to forcefully remove me from the land with his sword.
But european lag plus the current server made this epic sword battle little more then suddenly being notified that a billion damage was dealt to my face.
Still it was fun while it lasted because the server popped out pretty soon after.
The server somewhat reminds me of an MMO called Wurm Online, not strange because Wurm was created by Notch (partly) before he started working on minecraft.
Wurm is basically Minecraft but far more realistic. The game was most defined by the fact that literally everyone in the world wanted to rape you, kill you or perhaps both.
Considering the similar settup i think people will quikly find themselves ending up dead at the hand of their fellow players. Monsters are scary but it's players and the utter lack of consequence that will make approaching anyone a dangerous task.
Should that be changed? Ofcourse not, i think that's part of the beauty. How do people react when killing another player means getting a ton of advantages and if he has no faction to back him up, no consequence at all. Will players band together to prevent this kind of rampant slaughter or will people make it their main goal?
Perhaps more intresting then the start of the server will be to see how the server has changed in about a week as players truly begin forming big and lasting factions.
Take heed that going solo isn't as romantic or practical as you might think. You will get your face smashed in very often and without a faction to back you up, you are literally free game. Your creations and items will literally exist at the grace of the more powerfull factions.

/f map on (its kind of a silly tool, but gets the job done through a map in text, I personally like it).
As for the server map on tomorrows server. There is a pretty good chance we'll be able to use an older version of the world (5:27 PM was the most recent map Jezarith had access to). Jez was able to debug the faulty blocks and as far as we know this should remove that problem.
So if it works as we hope it does, the map will be the same one with Aspenwood, Andoril, Kamadan and Droknars all together as well as many of the faction bases and walls/buildings/shrines/etc still there. Also worth noting some of the "/f home" locations may be offset (but they may also automatically re-correct themselves when the world guard (or whatever the mod that limits the size of the world is) is on.
tl:dr - Jezarith may have fixed the server map, some slight rollback will have happened and hopefully the server will be up and going smoothly sometime tomorrow.
edit: @ Zalz - there are some factions such as my own that call themselves Mercenaries for a reason. If you can pay us, we'll ally and work for you/help you when you need it. Obviously may not sound as practical as it does in books/movies as you are likely not going to have the most money - others will not have need of us at all so you may well not need to pay as much as you might think. I know tonight the Ravens (our faction) was extremely dominant on the waterworld map and eventually no one messed with us.
I also believe a lot of the spontaneous ganking will slow after people have their own backs to worry about. I think eventually a food chain will form and people will focus on those above them instead of those below them (out of fear and ambition).
Also today there was a lot of spikes, tomorrow (hopefully) there should be less spikes and more consistent ping.

When you walk into/out of a claimed chunk a message will appear on your screen. It will display the name of the faction that claimed that chunk or 'wilderness' if the chunk is unclaimed. Also using the '/f map' command will display an ascii map of all claimed chunks near your location.
Claiming can sometimes seem unpredictable because chunk locations are predefined by the server and have no bearing on where the player is inside the chunk when claiming (aka the area you claim isnt centered on the player). If your wall for example goes one block into an adjacent chunk you will need to claim the entire adjacent chunk to protect it.
