I used to play 1.6 at a semi-pro level, then quit, after few years tried CS:S, couldn't get into it, but now I'm having a blast in CS:GO.
Sure, the spray patterns are different and you have to aim differently(beating the muscle memory is hard even after several years), but it's still fun and I don't mind learning a "new" game.
If your aim is really bad, I suggest a few hours of aim maps instead of dying in competitive after a few seconds and then waiting for the round to end. You'll get better much quicker.

If you want to argue the game is a fun shooter to sneak in a quick match to get your fps fix, TF2 is far superior in every aspect. I for one hope for an amazing 1.09 patch from the CS ProMod Dev team, if they do indeed implement the things they've been talking about ie. goldsrc sound engine & the 1.6 model size + movement it should be quite close to 1.6. But with much better admin, spec/hltv, gui & hud interfaces. If all the big 1.6 teams and organisations would so eagerly embrace the trainwreck go is, i imagine csp will definitely take off and become the new global team fps esports so desperately needs.
It's funny how similar the 1.6 vs GO discussion is to the BW vs SC2 one. On the one hand you have a bunch of conservatives who won't play anything different unless it's a carbon copy of their beloved game, on the other hand you've got people who used to play 1.6 (or CS:S) and are now rediscovering counter-strike through GO. Anyone who has been following the Halo competitive scene has seen this same transition happen three times already (Halo 1 -> Halo 2 -> Halo 3 -> Halo Reach), and it's always the same: There are the people who want a re-skinned version of the previous game and will think of any change as bad. Most of the time they won't be able to give any reasons to why the new way is worse of the old way better. Even if a new and interesting gameplay mechanic is introduced, it will be completely written off, because "that's not how it was".
Eventually though, those people will leave the community and be replaced by new ones that embrace the new game as it is. Then the community will be back to normal again. Until it's time for another sequel...

I'm having a hard time adapting from Source. I've been okay'ish for a long time in Source but right now in GO I can't kill shit. It's getting a bit better after 2 hours of Deathmatch this morning. Nevertheless it's been fantastic first days for me. My friend list is finally filled with cs players again. Yesterday evening we played a few 3v3's and 5v5's and there aren't a lot of things in gaming that I can enjoy as much.

For some reason I do a lot better with the Deagle than the m4 or AK, spread is more predictable and headshots come more easily.
Edit: 500th post

I feel like we should just declare a server the unofficial TL server(s) (probably best to have one for EU and US). Even playing on my own I have a blast tho. Especially now that a huge wave of newbies populates the servers again :D
|
i think MOST people playing cs: go are former 1.6 / source players, mostly all who played casually and are now able to experience the joy of counter-strike on an updated platform.
i'd imagine a pretty small portion of the playerbase has GO as their first cs game.

OK so every server I join is just filled with bots, zero players. Is this just me or..?

Every 1/3 posts is "I used to be pro / semi pro" i had no idea professional FPS games were that easy to get into xD Or does that just mean people played in the leagues? Like Cal and shit? Or scrimmed with their friends? :D
I still think theres a huge problem with head hitboxes and spamming, everyone in this thread seems to think its ok, but i think its bullshit, the amount of lucky shots and pure spamming that results in 1 shot your dead from miles away is ridiculous, Sorry, i should be able to burst someone down before they can spray me down at mid-long range, its called fucking accuracy xD once in a while is fine, but every damn time is just silly to die in 2 seconds from someone spamming half a map away.
Also the ragdoll physics are fucked up, the slightest touch on a gun will send it flying miles away. (I watched someone shoot an M4 at spawn with a pistol and it flew up in the air and didnt come back, xD) and it effects grenades sometimes too, they hit certain objects and "bounce" away. Also object hitboxes seem to be off, or the grenades hitbox, one of the two, sometimes you'll throw a grenade through a gap it should be able to get through, only for it to bounce off the wall and come back at you, resulting in suicide. xD
When that doesnt happen, the game is wonderful though! :D

When CS came and got popular, every motherfucker(in my country atleast) played this game, it was THE game to play. BW was soo tiny in comparison. And back then, it wasn't some infrastructure in the eSport as today, if you earned a few money from LAn tournaments, you would call your self maybe semi pro if it happened on a regular basis. No streaming, no nothing, just LAN and showing off in ladder (clanbase comes to mind). Today you have to maybe quit your job or be plain genius to be called semi-pro.
Today people have more games then they have friends, so it was quite an era when CS came >)

He is absolutely right ^^ Back then, there were no contracts even or that much sponsors. But the competition was always on a high level and there were tons of players and teams. It was where esports defined itself that CS was the pinnacle of teambased esport. As far as I can remember (and im quite "old" for a gamer), it was the first huge teambased tactical shooter.

Easy? I wouldn't say that, depending on the time you started, it took two to three years to get close to the top and that was only on a country level. The scene was really huge back then, because CS was the game to play.

Counter-Strike was so damn popular back in the day that you could find a LAN center filled with CS players every couple blocks in a major city. Compare it to these days where you only get one LAN center per city.
When I first discovered CS back in beta 6.1, it was already the most played mod for Half-Life, even more than Team Fortress Classic, which came with Half-Life.

Oh the best part: CS:GO has LAN :D

Second the idea of having "TL" official (if some guys are willing to use the server space) or unofficial servers. Would be nice anyway :p

Yes please this. Would be amazing to play on a server with this community. Could log in just to be social while being killed or killing stuff.

It would be basically like the good old times where I had my fav. server where I was hanging out with cool people. ^^ I approve!

It's too easy to cheat the casual games. I keep seeing a certain clan play horrible until once of them dies and suddenly they know exactly where to aim.
Need to learn how to use the ak and m4, pistols feel so much better.
Edit: a TL server would be great. Back when I played TF2 I'd always join No Heroes/TBR because they had a great community.
