Two quick questions for you guys that play this. Since I can see myself starting to play this after the D3 disapointment:
-Since the game is "released" in some days, is it better to just wait a bit and start playing POE then ? (Massive changes ? Character deletion ?)
-Is PoE a game that requires heavy theorycrafting, advocating having a build well in advance to not screw up too much or is it fine to just pick it up and start playing ?
|
-No, there will be changes but the basic mechanics and such are generally the same. They will change the skill tree (next question) and add a few things like act 3X, but otherwise its the same game. Characters will not be wiped.
-They are overhauling the skill tree (they've mentioned they'll do this every few months now), most notably adding a new class to the very center , so everyone will be more or less in the same boat. Old characters will receive a full skill reset to make a new build. Having experience will be nice to make a new build, but not 100% necessary. You can look on the forums for some ideas of builds (most will need modifications to be workable in 1.00) and play around with the online character builder to see what you want. You can play around a bit, ask some pros here, or wait a day or two and guides will certainly start rolling out.

I'd suggest leveling to ~40 before the respec, and 50 if you can. Then you can either improve that character or join a fresh league with a decent idea of how not to screw up too much. You can also plan a build on their site, post it here and get feedback. Either way, no reason to hold back.

If you don't optimize a build you will stall out almost guaranteed in act 2 cruel. Either from lack of survivability, or your kill speed will be so brutally slow that it's not worth it to continue playing your character. Also if your build sucks and you outlevel the zones to much the penalties to item drops will make it near impossible to outfit your character further.

I don't think it matters because Facebreaker + Meginords is so stupid OP for leveling.
Searing touch with fireball + firestorm with clarity is pretty good for int classes too, +2 gem level is stupidly strong. Add in Doedre's Touch and that cheap iron circlet unique as well for crazy early level.
I'm far from the best player, but I can to level 30 in a few hours doing either one.

My question wasn't really regarding whether optimizing a build is necessary but rather if it's intuitive enough to do ingame with only a general experience of RPG or if it requires to spend time outside of the game, reading "experts" thoughts, due to the shear complexity of it. Also, does the game allow for experimentation, was implied in the question.

You have to think about it, because some nodes give bigger boosts than others and some synergize better with others. Most of the modes are going to be just +10 to one of the 3 basic attributes, but then there will be clusters that offer different modifications or 20, 30 of a stat or some combination thereof, and there are a handful of keystones with extremely strong effects (can have an upside and a downside).
There is an online skill tree that lets you play around, it has a lot of nice options like identifying similar nodes, shortest paths, that kind of thing. I wouldn't say that you need to be an expert to design a build, but it does help to be familiar with where some things are. You can even respec your build, but it can be quite expensive as you only get a few refund points from quests and orbs of regret which grant more are rather expensive.
You get 1 skill point per level, so distributing them well really determines how strong you'll be. You may end up traveling from one area of the skill tree to another for a few levels during which you will feel like you're not getting stronger, but when you hit that big node the difference becomes pretty apparent. Also, the nodes near the starting area are usually "more powerful", which compounds the sense of an easy start. Bonuses are also additive, so that first +6% damage or whatever feels much stronger than the 10th one.

Does anyone have a +2 bow gem Silverbranch? I have an interesting concept for a low level pvp idea, but it would be even better with a +2 bow one.
Edit: Just got a ilvl 56 one for 2 chaos. I'm pretty sure they are worth a LOT more. According to the indexers there's only about 60~ still in circulation.

It is better to wait because you will have a shot at the new leagues which are from scrap-zero new leagues(Dominion&Nemesis). Everyone will be level 1 and have nothing. Why is that better in PoE? More public parties and your loot is worth more than when a league is allready in full run or you start on one of the permenant leagues.

I played shittons of Diablo2, Ragnarok Online and after that D3 and stuff. I love building builds, I love being creative with builds... but my first PoE build got retired at ~level 25.
There are some important mechanics which you first need to understand to be able to build builds on the fly. Most important is how skills are divided: Attacks & Spells and on an extra place: projectiles (can be attacks or/and spells). The other thing is GGG made it so that mechanics are reflected in the description, read carfuly and u can get alot out of it! But you maybe want to look at some skills and read how they work: http://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Path_of_Exile_Wiki
edit: and what happened to me also; mana pots get worse over the time you progress. When you are playing maps you want to be able to selfsustain ur mana-spending and won't ever or just rarly use mana pots. I think thats one of those things people have trouble with when hitting merciless (all due to %multiplicators from support games -> more progress -> more links -> more mana spending).

And for fairness reasons: The disadvantage is that the general price level will be HIGHER than that of the permanent leagues. Anarchy items in my experience were ~50% more expensive.

So, the official release is getting close. Has the combat been updated recently? I haven't played in a few months and while I like a ton of aspects of Path of Exile, the combat just feels really sluggish. I remember there being talk about this being remidied before release, has anything like that been looked to?

I just notice that every time I don't play for a couple of months the droprate seems to increase.

It just feels unresponsive and inaccurate.

PoE's engine will always feel "sluggish" because it imitates the good ol' D2 where it was like that too. What you mean by sluggish I assume are things like throwing traps and they will land slightly off from where ur cursor tip was. It sometimes feels like the targeting is tiled into pixels and when you hit the edge of one the skill will be place in the center of it.
But in terms of performence they are constantly trying possible adjusments to improve upon it.

I never played D3 but what's wrong with the fights? Aside from desync, which usually happens outside of fights, I don't have any major issues with PoE. In fact that could be stopped with better pathfinding and less objects to desync from, e.g. those carts in Lunaris 3, cages in battlefront, pretty much all of The Catacombs and so on.
|
Anyone has a spare Meginord belt ? I don't have any exalt or chaos yet but I have a few unique to trade if anyone is interested.
|
Did they fix the sync problems in PoE?
|
So.. me and a couple other people might have just broken high level pvp. I don't wanna give any details yet, because we wanna try it for a pvp tournament when they release them if they don't patch it out.

Ah this guy beat me to it. When I was playing beta it felt like constant input lag and the animations were shit. Combat just felt so stale. Assumed it was beta being beta, but maybe it's still the same.
