Basically hats from TF2, or skins in league of legends. You could buy different skins, dragon headed fireballs, or crows which follow you and peck out the eyes of your defeated enemies. )
You should wait until you play the game to say its everything Diablo 3 should have been. :p
If you can buy cosmetic items you can also buy "power" as long as you can trade that stuff. I think its worse to add items to a game even if they are just cosmetics then what D3 is doing since its only items comming from other players who play the game.
However the game does look good and hope it will be awesome!

I signed for the beta last week, this game will be pretty cool

Will still be a "dumb" H&S but it looks so much better than D3. I probably won't play it but competition is always good for Blizzard. They have been slacking a lot lately.

Woah looks damn good. Diablo 3 still looks miles better but this still seems worth a try.

You don't really buy power, the difference in Diablo being that anybody can get these items in the game already, and they are buying from other players, and this ALREADY HAPPENS IN D2! So that's a silly reason to not like D3.
1) Small set of skills that just get better version 2) Run around, acquire quest, kill baddies, loot, return to town and sell. Lather, rinse, repeat 3) Dungeons and at the end, a boss. 4) Group up with pals to take on more and more. 5)Direct ability ports from WoW - Fury = Rage for example 6) Always online.
There's nothing wrong with it. WoW is just WCIII + D2 anyway when it boils down to it. Yet, to say it's not similar...well, I'd like your opinion on what's different really.
Also, considering how much as WoL storyline was...I don't see how you can claim it's going to be a good story already. Same for gameplay/items...are you solely basing this off the fact that Blizzard is making it?

Well it's free so of course it's at least worth a try

The league system looks cool. Reminds me of fantasy football in the way it can be set up, except with swords and killing.

So what you're saying is that D3 is like D2 then? Because everything you just said is in D2 pretty much WoW is all about "Kill 10 rats" and stupid stuff. Diablo has always been about dungeons and loot, and that's exactly what I have experience in D3. Yes WoW took the dungeon and loot concept from Diablo... but what RPG doesn't use that core concept? Diablo just takes it to the extreme and D3 still does that.
|
I don't think it's the core concept of diablo that d3 has lost, it's everything else. Real money auction house, more WoW-style artstyle, RAINBOWS, alwaysonline, instant respeccing of skills and stats, gore, and that sense of horror. And Path of Exile, for me at least, still has what d3 is missing.

Wow, this looks excellent. Gonna give it a blast for sure, the hardcore aspect really appeals

Looks pretty awesome, signed up for the beta.

If anyone in TL gets into the beta please tell us so we, in this thread, get to ask some questions!

I'd hope that purchased items, not having gameplay impacts, are also kept out of the in-game economy. I don't have a problem with what are effectively out-of-game items being sold from outside the game itself.
Looks cool at a first glance, anyway. I want more details.

Just signed up for beta, looks like fun and would tie me over till D3 beta :D

I'm in the Alpha, you can ask me questions and I might answer (I am still bound by NDA). Also, I am really busy with an internship so I might not even answer questions that I can answer (mostly if you can find them in the public forums or dev diary sections).

Oh cool, I didn't realize there was an alpha for people outside the company?
Functionality wise (PvP/PvE leagues/ladder) the game sounds awesome. I've seen the vids on youtube and read the PoE FAQ and taken a glimpse at the Dev Diaries.
Here are some general questions on top of my head:
1. Chat channels/easiness of finding peoeple to do co-op with/play with? Just the "hangaround" feel and being social in the game I guess. Probably to early to say in Alpha. Bnet in SC2 to me feels lonely. Not that i have a great idea on how chat channels should be organized but still. I know that PvP has matchmaking so I guess you can just hit the button "let me in on the action" and the game finds opponents for you in respective brackets/leagues?.
2. Is leagues similar to SC2 leagues? That is within a gold league there are many divisions? Or is there a global league?
3. How long is a average PvP 1vs1 battle? Feels slow, fast or just fine? I guess this is highly subjective but if you could compare to either Diablo 2 dueling or WoW dueling maybe.
4. You overall feeling about the smoothness of the game. Reason for this is because I played in beta in Warhammer Online. A game, specially an IP I absolutely love. But when I entered beta feeling the clunkiness of the game I knew this game was going nowhere, and I never even bought the game. Combat has to feel smooth.
|
Let's go with something a lot more simple:
A person played D2 and liked it. They want a more refined version of the game, as befits a sequel/successor - would they enjoy this game in your opinion? And if possible, what does it surpass/fall short in?

Looks pretty. I don't like the fact that they have literally lifted everything from d2 and plonked it in a better graphics engine though. As much as I love D2, and as fun as it is to play, there are several systems in that game (pot spam, for example) that are just outdated and silly, and only get put in for nostalgia's sake or because "we've always done it this way".
One of the things that made me most excited about D3 was when I saw that Blizzard wasn't pussying out and trying to make some D2 clone with better graphics, they're actually intent on improving the franchise and cutting out the deadwood.
I'd give this game a look if it was released right now, because I have no games to play at all and I'm very bored... sadly it seems like it'll be released around the same time as D3, in which case I can see it getting crushed like so many other indie games..

For PvE people Diablo 3 is probably the best choice by a good margin. Blizzard doesn't dissappoint in PvE.
However if you are into PvP like me, specially want competition of some sort I see no reason to even install Diablo 3.
That being said I would buy Diablo 3 the second it comes out if they decide to put back the ladder in PvP arenas.

I do love PvP a lot, there's no doubt about that. But D2 was never the game I played for PvP. D2 kept PvP as a bonus addition, almost, and never treated it as a serious thing. I was glad to hear that D3 was following in the same footsteps, and flat out refusing to make PvP the focus of the game.
But then, I'll be playing Guild Wars 2, DotA2, etc for my PvP fix. D3 is a different game entirely for me so I guess that explains why I don't really care about the PvP in it.
edit: Should add that I don't resent PoE for including PvP and making it more focused, it's just not enough of a draw for me in a hack'n'slash.
