Help a noob guys...

I've decided to go with essence drain shadow for starters. The build is pretty straightforward and stuff but I have absolutely no idea how to play in the beginning. There are so many available skills and I don't know which ones to use as progression. Right now I have frost blades, lightning tendrils and contagion (contagion will be used in the build so I'm just trying to level it a bit). Should I go for something with more range and AoE? Which skill should I use in the beginning?
Time is precious. Waste it wisely.

First of all, you can level all skills without leveling them. There's no penalty, you just need to socket them and sockets are limited. You can also use your second weapon slots for that, the gems in that level as well.

You told a weird combination of skills. Frost Blades is a melee skill and doesn't scale with Spell Damage. Lightning Tendrils can be used for leveling, but it's basically melee and as such not really beginner friendly. I'd personally use Freezing Pulse and Fire Trap at first. Get Clarity as quest reward when you can, as well as buying Flame Dash from Vendor. You should get and use Lesser Multiple Projectiles for more Freezing Pulse AoE if you got the links for it. Before Merveil you'll have Essence Drain. I dunno how good it is for leveling, if it isn't, there's always Blade Vortex which is from the same quest.

Fireball might also be decent by now, but I haven't tested it so I can't say that.


EDIT: Considering the passive tree you linked is probably the same as yours (up to the level you got)... Use Ethereal Knives and Fire Trap. Should've checked it. I should've known considering you are leveling Essence Drain. Blade Vortex (once you get it) is a great good option when you get it if leveling with Essence Drain doesn't go well.

Essence drain/ contagion probably isn't as fast as fire trap/ethereal knives until about level 28, at which point ed/contagion really kicks off.

FFS, Canyon boss killed me 3 times. Glad I didn't play HC, lol. They switched the boss to the Village Ruin one... I played the map for the second time, the first time I somehow managed to do it without even noticing it being that hard. Second map was with some monster dmg, and bah...

The few new maps I've played so far all were enjoyable though, most even great. Acid Lakes is great for example. Factory is the only meh map I've played. I feared lots of new Phantasmagorias lol.

I am pretty bummed out overall. My shit PC is keeping me from being able to play really. Probably due for an upgrade (i5 2500; AMD Radeon HD 6800) but what I have honestly should be able to run the game without the FPS issues I'm getting. If I turn all the graphics options down to their lowest settings and turn off multithreading, the game runs relatively fine until there is something that lights up the screen. Some loot boxes, boss skills, and other random things take my fps from fine right down to 0 and the game is completely unresponsive for at least 5+ seconds, usually more around 10 and a few times it has locked up completely and I have to force restart my pc.

Only a matter of time before I die to it again in HC and not sure I want to put up with it at all in general. PoE has always been terrible with AMD cards but 2.4 has just made it unplayable for me.

EDIT: There seem to be others with similar issues with 2.4 on reddit and on their technical support forums, but I haven't see anything to fix the issue or any response from ggg.

Bosses are soooo much scarier now. Almost every map I've played so far was harder in the boss department. Either switched to are more challenging boss or new skills. There are exceptions though, like Dunes and Jungle Valley (which for some builds is dangerous anyway).

Like Catacombs necro now spawns Skelettons like from Vaal Summon Skelettons. Vaal City Boss was pretty nuts, i took one hit and didn't bother taking another. Decoy Totem is the MVP lately, I've even linked it to a 20q Minion&Totem Res gem now. >.<

Also quite funny (and sad) how in parties it feels like 60+% play Pathfinder Blade Vortex.

i was tempted to go OPfinder BV but im glad i didnt. chiefy totems isnt too bad, though im wondering if it would have been better to go templar for ritual of awakening (vs warchief marauder). having 4 totems seems kinda cool.

Does anybody else find the map drop system is extremely biased toward maps you've already beaten, rather than ones that are connected?

My pool is like 10+ of 5 different maps and 0 other maps even though they're connected on the Atlas. At first I thought it was just luck or whatever, but now I'm level 80 and yet barely into the Atlas and it's kinda hard to ignore it.

Also, the drop rate on sextants is a joke since they don't even do anything anyway.

Well, since connected maps-that you care about anyway-can only drop as +1s, and +1s can only drop from some mobs, and the lower tier and below maps you drop are limited to ones you've cleared in the Atlas, you're almost certainly going to have a large surplus of cleared maps. It is kind of surprising connected "downgrades" aren't more common, but the architecture of the overall Atlas is kind of clunky in that respect.

That's what I'm talking about, connected downgrades. They never seem to drop.

How does atlas work anyways?
When I open it , it is always empty and there is x/125 on bottom?!

It's not empty, you can see at least one map at each corner if you examine it. As you "complete" maps (hover over them to see how, for low level maps it's to kill the boss in a blue or higher map), more of the atlas becomes revealed. You can only find maps that you have completed OR that are connected to the map that you are currently running. What that ends up meaning is that you always progress on one or two quadrants while the other quadrants are stuck at a super low tier and you never progress in them because the system is fucking retarded lol.

Pathfinder isn't OP in itself, it's just that there are WAY too much options in term of flasks.

It's completely retarded that a Ranger could go CI and be the best build this patch. But no matter, I'm perfectly content to go hybrid ES-Eva as a trickster. Because min-maxing are for retards.

Meh, disappointed to see that Carto boxes only drop maps you know. Had a t3 one with +3 tier, only dropped 3 Vaal City Maps and a few lower ones I already had.

edit: Or wait, I got a Graveyard Map. Which I'm linked to but haven't dropped yet. OR I found it in that map, not sure...

The game sucks before maps its too easy and meaningless specially in SC everybody runs without killing anything,all this repeatitiveness 3 acts 3 labyrinths its too much.GGG should do something to fix this maybe get rid of normal difficulty,even in HC if you die most of the time is because you are forced to play fast than actually mistakes or bad plays, the game should be more difficult and balanced.

What is preventing you from going to low level maps from all quadrants?
