There were two other infantry threads, but neither of them did a good job of describing the game or posting relevant links, so here goes.
What makes this game unique? -Supports up to 200 players in one arena -Intelligent projectile/physics coding, where aim, reflexes, and teamwork matter -Isometric viewpoint: rewards battlefield awareness -Complex damage models (a lot of people don't realize this makes a fun game) -Several game types (Zones) for different tastes -User-friendly (sort-of) editors and open source C# scripting
What are some similar games to Infantry? -Nox developed by Westwood Studios (bought out by EA) -Subspace/Continuum -Asteroids (except infantry is the MMO version, and much better, only comparable on a fundamental level)
How are the graphics? 2.5D allows the game to operate at a very high efficiency rate, dedicating its resources to important game functions instead of shiny/flashy effects that doesn't contribute to gameplay that much, but at the same time avoids the graininess of most other 2D games.
This game is so old, why bother playing it? Some of the best games of our generation have stood the test of time because developers back then better understood what it meant to create a game with less fluff and more interesting mechanics (IMO). This game will challenge you unlike most other games (not quite as hard as starcraft obviously! I don't know if it helps to say that I'm in "master league" and I enjoy challenging games with high skill caps)
I thought SoE owned this game and ran it into the ground? They do, and they did...here's the thing though. The game used to be free and was put on a payment service around 2001. Hundreds of thousands of people used to play this game, and then 95% of the population left. The game is once again free, but SoE does not actively develop it (they use random tech supports from their other games to occasionally check up on the server).
Why is it Infantry "2.0"? Infantry 2.0 is "the people's" server, allowing for open development and constant updates. The game server was reverse engineered by a talented coder named aaerox. This project has been going on for years now, and finally has produced some remarkable results in the form of moving AI with fully integrated C# scripting.
Where can you find players who play this game? Our IRC address is ircd.suroot.info, channel #infantry Forums are www.freeinfantry.org
-Start Launcher.exe, ignore the source code folder unless you're skeptical and want to see what's in the program. -Input a random username and password, this will be yours from now on. -Click Launch and browse to infantry.exe in your Infantry folder. (Only done once) -This should launch Infantry, go into options and remove the directory servers. -Add in infdir1.aaerox.com as the only directory server, hit ok then Refresh the zone list, ZZ should come up, enter an Alias and enter.
New Infantry?!?!?!??! Fuck man I loathe SOE for killing such an amazing game. Extreme and KR were my favourite zones from way back in the day. Then when Free Infantry came along CR and CM were really great too. They had so many good new zones, even fun ones like Zombie Zone. I would play this game for agesssssssssssss. Now when I go on the SOE Infantry server and see like 30 people playing Faydon Lake with like 13 people in spectator or a single dude in EOL fighting against spiders (I never played EOL) I become so sad. Ah.........so many memories.
Haven't been here in a long time. I'm one of the developers doing bits and pieces of coding alongside aaerox. If you have any technical or other questions, feel free to ask, we don't mind doing a mini-AMA.
We have taken an old game that was left for dead and turned it into something way better. Those that played Infantry should come and check it out, a lot has changed with the new additions from the server!
I remember wayyyy wayyyy long time ago that I used to play Medic because Medic was OP as shit. One time, I held a capture point on this hilltop for ages. Ran out of bullets. Started using my knife. I was behind awesome cover so tanks couldn't hit me and knives used to travel down hill, so I would just spam my knife button and just wreck people trying to climb it.
Subspace and Infantry: good memories. If some TL people want to get together and play this, I'll join in. Might be nice to have someone with knowledge helping people into the game on TL Teamspeak.
damn! i remember playing infantry online when i was just a kid and i absolutely loved it. defintely one of the most fun games from my childhood.
i'm trying to get it working right now, but i'm having a problem even getting the executable file to run or appear anywhere for that matter. the station launchpad tries to get it to update, but i dont see what its updating because i cant find the .exe anywhere. any help?

Hey Spoon, check C:\Users\Public\Sony Online Entertainment\Installed Games\Infantry. The executable is Infantry.exe.
Sony's Launchpad is an embarrassment. It sounds like you might not have installed Infantry with Administrator-level privileges.

BUG HUNT OMG
CTF Extreme and Bug Hunt were my favourites :D then soccer brawl
We have a developer working on porting Soccer Brawl over!
On July 08 2011 10:20 Keeto wrote: Are you guys going to be playing classic game arenas like Twin Peaks and Chambert's Moon?? If so I might join in! : D
Of course. Classic zones are hosted in addition to the new zones that the community develops.
"Free Infantry" has been around for quite some time. We initially populated with Twin Peaks, Chambert's Moon, a bit of Fleet! and the like. Later on the community introduced some kick ass zones that SOE later wanted to be ported over, since it was stealing their playerbase
Our current focus is on Zombie Zone 2, which changes Infantry completely. A lot of the zone now revolves around surviving against a merciless AI.

hmm well i got the game to run now, but any time i try and join a zone from the main screen it says "session expired, please run the station-launch pad and restart the game"
any ideas? thanks, cant wait to play this awesome game again!
WHOOPS: nevermind. forgot to add the new directory address
I'm not sure why I can't edit my original post, but anyways, this bump is relevant due to recent events. SoE shut down the official infantry servers some days ago, HOWEVER.
We have our own server built from scratch using their client. You can download the game fully from our servers at this moment in time.
Incase you don't want to visit the reddit link, here is a new fan-made trailer made by me in high quality (which gives it a lot more justice than most current youtube videos of this game):
You can't edit the post anymore because it's too old. I think the timelimit might be six months but I can't remember.
I had a lot of fun playing Infantry. I played it when it was free, back in the old days, but I wasn't particularly good at it. I was good at sort-of-similar SubSpace (Continuum) but I was never that serious with Infantry. The game was so much fun just fooling around that it didn't seem to matter. I'm sure I'll give this free server a shot in the coming days.
Oh I remember this game. I loved piloting vehicles in this one. Eos crater was amazingly fun, I had so much fun building shit and watching people assault it. Bug hunts as well.
I tried fleet but never had enough people to get a legit game going; it was a good concept though.

Yeah, that has always been infantry's problem...getting games going. The AI was never enough to supplement gameplay in a meaninful way...but they may change soon.
I just tried this out of curiosity, and the controls are difficult! I guess I'm not used to it. And assigning weapons to buttons is confusing. I was playing in the zombie zone with a few other people and I couldn't figure out how to use the rpg. It said shift+control but it wouldn't fire every time I used it. And apparently you cant assign buttons to letters or numbers?? I tried it but every time I pressed the key it would go into the chat instead of firing the weapon.
I can see this being fun but the controls are difficult.

That's weird because I never had that problem when I played. The opposite was usually the case: zones were always full so getting a spot was challenging. Game activity changes so much over time.

What you want to do first is hit ESC > OPTIONS > KEYBOARD SETTINGS > "Enter to type". This will make it so you can assign letter keys to weapons.
As for RPG, it is a stand and fire weapon (you have to stand still in order to fire it). You also want to set your strafe keys to something more user friendly, since the default key setups are pretty bad. Go to ESC > OPTIONS > KEYBOARD CONFIG, and at the top, you'll see the options for Strafe Left and Strafe Right. Set those to something comfortable (recommended z and x)

You must have played when it was populated. It is a struggle for zones to fill up and not fade after a few hours (except for ZZ which has AI)
Do people still play this? I'd be excited for a nice ol' game of Fleet! Also one thing I've also been curious about is to see if anyone has any of the old top 200 charts from specific zones -- mainly for nostalgia's sake.

I LOVED this game, especially before Sony got ahold of it and made it silly... I got all excited when I saw this thread and then I clicked the website's page and the server list shows like... no one playing.
Anyone remember when the original game was out they'd have those weird experimental zones like the racing one? Haha, those were the days.
I used to play this sooo much, both the normal version and then the alien one that was released... god i've had a craving to play the infantry vs alien for awhile now is it still there? And how active is it? Got a craving to alt-strafe !!
omg, i was always craving to play this game again, but could never work the SOE installer.. how actively is the Twin Peaks map played? I pretty much only played TP, Chambert's Moon and I think it was ______ Arena (forgotten the name, but it involved leveling your character with different classes like psionics and such)
Infantry seriously has the potential to be "big" again but it needs players to let everyone know its here and what its about. Anyone interested please don't be afraid to ask if you need help. I know there is a bit a of a learning curve but, its well worth it once you understand whats going on.
I think more people still play Subspace/Continuum, which is like Infantry in space, made by the same people. I never got into infantry though, stuck to Subspace back in the days.
He is also one of the most knowledgeable hackers i know, probably up there with R1CH. Really talented guy Now where's rick and ape... you three were monsters together lol
