Out of the few straategies I have played I'd say World in Conflict wins overall. It's the best looking, most cinematic, it's full of good developments all around and the gameplay is decent.

Homeworld was great too, but I did not like the very slow pace of gameplay.

And of course, Wings of Liberty had the best overall design and gameplay.

Do you say it that way because this is a starcraft forum?

I thought SC2 Campaign was pretty meh. I didn't like where they took the story.

WC3 Was amazing though, it really was. Nice combination of gameplay and story. Very enjoyable.

Dawn of War: Dark Crusade and Soulstorm have pretty fun campaigns, especially when fighting on the homeworlds/hometerritories. The other territory fights get pretty tedious fast though.

WoL is definitely up there gameplay wise.

Warcraft 3 and TFT campaigns were fun. Starcraft 1 aswell.

Starcraft 2 was abit cheesy, too many weird missions. I missed the standard build a base and kill the AI bases. Not saying it was bad but could been better!

I think i liked the campaign of WC3 RoC the best. Ending was epic. Also, first missions with the orc campaign were refreshing.

Warcraft 3... I even replayed that once.

It's campaign was way better than SC2 for sure.... (I don't care about Unitupgrades and all that shit, i want cool missions).

I don't have played many RTS campaigns, mostly old stuff like CC1, RA, Tiberium Sun, a bit of AoE 1&2, War III +Frozen Throne, Sc, bw and Sc2.

In my opinion Sc had the best story of all those games and Sc2 had the best missions by far even if the story itself is pretty bad.
War3 RoC was decent too.

Agreed on WC3:RoC, thought that was better than TFT and SC2, but I did enjoy both of those as well. Not sure I've ever really enjoyed a non-Blizzard RTS campaign. The Red-Alert's weren't very fun for me, although I am a big fan of a lot of Turn-Based strategy cames (Civ, Master of Orion, etc.)

I'm personally so glad they changed it up. RTS campaigns revolving around killing AI bases and doing it over and over are more boring than the "Wait for 30 min until reinforcements arrive!", they really accomplished something with SC2. It's the only RTS campaign where I actually enjoyed the gameplay.

It was that good.

Warcraft 3, both RoC and TFT.

I can't count the amount of time ive spent playing it.

Although BFME1 is on the second place (yes, I admit to like a RTS from EA).

Star Craft 1 + BW is my favorite campaign personally. Then again I've only played like 8 RTS games :p.

edit: I loved fenix's zealot and was sad when I realized that it wasn't allowed in melee

The Red Alert and Red Alert 2(not Yuri) campaigns were pretty fun. I still go back and play them a lot when I'm in the mood for something other than StarCraft. Tiberium series before C&C4(;( RIP my childhood) are alright too.
The fact that I can micro now makes them cooler.
Starcraft had a not so great campaign in comparison, though it's worth it just for the story.

SC1+BW campaigns very awesome, especially story-wise.
WC3 RoC campaign was also great. Didn't like TFT much.
WoL campaign had a crappy story for sure, but i liked the design. :p

And i don't know if this counts since it's a RTS/turn based hybrid, but i love the total war series as well.

the diverse gameplay of single player is the best ting about sc2 imo. such a blast to play the sp missions. So much memorable stuff.. zombie plagues, berserking odin, lava rising, survival

Yea Blizzard did an amazing job on the missions. Some seemed inspired by great old games like commando. Definitly better and more varied than the repetition of build army, kill comp, kind of missions.

I love both the warcraft and starcraft campaigns, mainly because of the story line/lore i suppose (especially warcraft). Wings of Liberty was kind of a downer story wise imo, but the gameplay was amazing. Really taking RTS single player to a new level imo.

Edit: My RTS experience is pretty much limited to war3/sc tho, except for a little age of empires and total annihilation.

i foiund wc3 campaing really bad and for me sc2 was also one of the best ever made so its just oppinnion based i think

i also think that C&C always have some of the best campaings ever played

I think World in Conflict is a very under rated gem. It's unfortunate. Like I said, there a couple of others with better story and design but this has no real weakness and excellent production values. I guess that WCIII is a worthy contender for best all rounder, but hypothetical WWIII modern day scenarios > fantasy imo.

I have very fond memories of C&C1's campaign. It was the first game that I 'beat'. The Nod level where you start with like 4 rocket soldiers and 4 minigunners took me forever to beat but I felt like a mad baller when I did it.

AoE: The Rise of Rome! I really loved all the historical people you get to play against and with throughout all of the AoEs, gave a feeling of realism.

I'm surprised to see so many people say RoC. Personally, I played the everloving shit out of that campaign and the game in general, but I was maybe 11 when it came out and it was one of the few games I had, so I always thought my memories were just tainted by nostalgia. Perhaps I had better taste in games than I realise!

+1
lots of rtses had better story than sc2, but sc2 had the best gameplay and most diverse mission design.

War3 RoC

It was pretty easy (even on hard) but it's still really fun.

The final Undead and Night Elf missions are works of art imo.

I also really enjoyed the BW campaigns, but that was mostly the dialogue, not the gameplay. The action mission design was pretty meh.

SC2 campaign was really underwhelming.

CnC 3 was nice. but kanes wrath and cnc 4 screwed it up.
i liked sc2's campaign! it was interactive and made you make choices on what to spend. the different moral choices was a nice touch though.
but my fav is warcraft 3 RoC.
The part when arthas turns is super awesum!!!

In terms of gameplay, I thought SC2's campaign was BY FAR the best. I'm usually super bored by campaigns - I didn't like SC's and BW's campaign, and I've never finished WC3's campaign. Not because of the story, but simply because the gameplay was ALWAYS so boring - either build a base and run over opponent, or run around with a squad of units that are given to you.

SC2's missions principles are the same of course, but what you actually have to do brings a lot of tension to the game. And then of course there is all the other awesome stuff like researching upgrades outside of the actual missions etc.

That's just gameplay though.

In terms of story... I'm not really sure. I haven't ever played an RTS that had a decent story, most of it was superficial standard stuff... SC and BW drew a really nice picture of an original universe and the plot developed fairly interesting, but the characters were just pretty one-sided (unlike actual persons).

One I've replayed the most was probably the first Homeworld, still love that one to death. Second mission still makes me kinda sad even today =(

I also agree with the people mentioning Wc3, some very good missions in there and not bad story-wise. (So sad that WoW leads to it being canon that so many of the characters from that are killed off in such unsatisfying ways <.<)

Company of Heroes was great (the first one), the graphics and style were completely new and revolutionary at the time, the storyline was good too. Seriously, go play it.

WoL was amazing as well.

I am pretty much like others here, Wc3: RoC is probably my favorite.

Sc2 had great mission design but facepalm story.

On top of that i enjoy most of the Age of Empire campaigns. WH: Dawn of War was pretty good aswell.

Red Alert series was fun. But thats also cause Tayna (aka Tari Wuhrer) is smokin hot. But I cant seem to think of a storyline better than BW. It was an all around complete package for me.

in cinematics, I was quite impressed with armies of exigo, tough the story itself kinda sucked

I liked the SC2 campaign alot, also WC3 and TFT had pretty LONG campaigns, i played them for multiple days and ended up using cheats to get through the storyline (I didn't like most missions, but some was fun, especially the Bonus Mission with Rexxar )

SC/SC2 are the only RTSs I ever finished the whole campaign for (including extra missions). However, I loved the campaign for Supreme Commander. Not because the story was any good, it was terrible, but it gave you a feeling of large scale battle unlike any other RTS I've experienced.

Warcraft 3 and TFT for sure. The story alone is so compelling and then mixed with the outrageously fun gameplay is just beautiful.

SC2 for gameplay. WC3+TFT for story.

I tried to like the SupCom campaigns but a lot of the missions felt like they were very repetitive.

Basically you'd have some objective and enemies would continue to attack in regular intervals (including spawning outside the map) until you completed the objective, after which the map expands and you'll get some extra resource nodes along with a new objective. You could even abuse this by massing a huge army before completing an objective and be more than well prepared for whatever the next area of the level contains (because the enemy is stuck in the weaker spawn patterns until you move on).

WC3 was the first RTS campaign I actually cared about and it still has a great story and some great lore. I actually played it before the SC campaign and SC was my first RTS =/

The SC2 story was the worst I've ever seen. Really. It sounds even worse than a Hollywood movie, even the dialogs are made out of stereotypical stock phrases... a true shame. The gameplay is absolutely brilliant though, and - I don't think anyone has mentionned this so far - the brutal difficulty actually is worth it. Some missions are a nightmare to deal with, even if you are an experienced RTS player.

Of course WC3 had a much better story... but even if the gameplay was not as rich, I think there was a true link between the buidling up of the tension in the storyline and the missions themselves. The final missions for each race were phenomenal... the final Night Elf mission is probably the best EVER. Plus, I think being limited to play with the Terrans only is pretty lame, in WC3 you usually was delighted to control a whole new race along with new heroes once you had completed a set of mission.

This was my thought. Although I don't think I ever completed GC1, the campaign I got to see left a very positive feeling. The missions are quite variable, the gameplay feels challenging and even the storyline seemed interesting. It felt like the game was actually designed for people able to think on their own instead of pointing out every slightest bit of detail with huge highlights.

Epic mammoth tanks, the cutscenes.

SC2 for innovative mission objectives + bonus objectives that actually had an effect on your progression.

WC3 for storyline/persistant progression on hero characters, plus the missions were almost as fun as SC2's. At times WC3 missions could feel like Diablo dungeons, which is a good thing.

RA3 was awfully boring, I was really disappointed. Does anyone remember the RA Counterstrike secret missions where you had to fight the ants? Haha now THAT was bonus content.

Gameplay wise, WoL campaign was pretty cool. But overall, I'd say WC3/TFT had a way better campaign. Solid missions and great storyline. Replayed it bout 3 times. SC and BW also had a great storyline.

Age of Mythology, I don't know how the gameplay compared to C&C but I remember having a blast playing that game, probably because I love greek mythology though lol.

I think SC1 was the best for me.

Maybe WC3, it's just I don't remember any of it, but I remember I was delighted when I was playing.

SC2 was kinda... meh :/

Storywise I loved Homeworld. Too bad the game was a bit broken and you could just capture almost the entire enemy fleet.

HW Cataclysm was awesome.

I absolutely hated the SC2 campaign, perhaps because I expected so much better(actually objectivly it isn't that bad). Warcraft III for me(bot RoC and Frozen Throne) the best campaign and story line I have ever played in an RTS game, it was truly something with stuff like Arthas and Manneroth and the blood curse etc. (The nerd in me was happy). SC1 had an amazing storyline aswell. I did like Red alert and Command and conquer, not because it was really awesome, but because of the extremly cheesy storyline, combined with cheesy Real actor footage(The guy who plays Kane is my hero). It was so cheesy that it was good. Red alert 3 went a little overboard though, didn't like it.

PS: The ants in Counterstrike were a nightmare, why the hell would ants have flamethrowers damnit?!

Having skimmed what most people here have said, I'm going to have to agree with a lot of people and say WC3 RoC/TFT. The epic buildup to the final battle against Kil'Jaeden in the original as well as the darker storyline involved with the expansion were just amazing.

I still have a soft spot for the epic orc narrator from WC2. Anyone else remember how awesome he made missions sound before going on rampages?

EDIT: Totally left out half a sentence

Hmmm.. I've played the following rts's campaigns that i remember,

SC (bw) - Pretty good, good story and missions are alright although bland.
sc2 - It was alright, story was fairly meh, missions while well done and fairly unique a lot of the time were simply too over the top. The cut scenes and interactive bc were pretty neat nevertheless.
c&c1 - Classic, but sadly don't really remember well enough to say very much. I did enjoy it very much.
c&c3 - Heh, it was ok.
c&c4 - So bad.... so bad...
red alert 3 - Pretty bad
Wc2 - Classic as well, think the c&c1 campaign was better though. No game will ever be able to top this however
wc3 (tft) - Pretty good. Story was solid and the missions were well done and had plenty of variation. I can't quite put my finger on exactly where the wc3 missions variance was better than sc2's, but nevertheless that is the case imo.

I liked Sacrifice's campaign. Being able to choose customize your army and spell path was fun, although at times frustrating as you were going for some imba combination but certain gods were mad at you and not giving missions. That was necessary though. Animate dead was hugely op. The voice acting in that game was pretty good too. Also, the late game units and spells were just so fun to use.

WC3: RoC. Wasn't that big a fan of TFT single player since it had no real orc campaign (well, the side game thing felt like a precusor to DoTA or something). TA was also pretty sweet, some of those missions lasted hours and felt so epic back then.

Probably Company of Heroes' first campaign (Liberation of Caen). Those defense mission were tight, especially the one where you have to defend the hill from nazis. And they attack from every side, oh and they have artillery too.

Did anyone else like Dow II? I thought that campaign was awesome, albeit repetitive. World in Conflict was pretty epic too, though unrealistic.

Wc3 for the story. But gameplay design I have to go with sc2. I have never enjoyed a single player more for a rts game. I also had no problem with the story since I was looking for somthing cheesy from the terran campaign. I still enjoy the cheesy moments from sc from the terran campaign.

After a while the horrid mission design of sc and wc3 and pretty much every other rts got to me. That never happened with sc2 for me.

Dune 2 isn't very good by todays standards and the campaign is basically the same thing over and over again but I sure enjoyed that a lot

Wc3 and sc2 were both really good but sc2 is the better one.

I guess I have to say SC2. I don't care all that much about story, and I found the missions to be entertaining and diversified, so I really enjoyed it. I also liked WC3 and some of the C&C ones, mainly Generals and Red Alert (the original one).

Imo a good campaing for a rts needs a very good story, and epic moments. i don't give a shit about gameplay, just because for that exist multiplayer, a campaing hardly can surpass multiplayer. Sc2 gameplay can be good, but the story is a total crap, totally uncomplex, so straightforward, zero plot twists. If you want really good gameplay, go for something like "Commandos", really deep gameplay and a nice historical background.

For my fave campaign i just go for vanilla Sc, the best plot ever for a rts, so fking many epic moments. The science vessel cinematic, the "death" of Kerrigan, the Duke capital ship mission (the real "Berserk Thor" mission), the "return" of Kerrigan, the invasion og Aiur, Fenix appearance, the fall of Fenix, Tassadar appearance, the return of Fenix, the quest for Zeratul, Raynor-Protoss alliance, Tassadar sacrifice, JESUS, so much epicness on that campaign. Also, imo, Sc music and voices are better than Sc2.

Honorable mention for Warcraft III RoC, some epic missions too.

#1. Warcraft 3. Blizzard did an amazing job with that game and it expanded the already interesting lore of the warcraft universe into an epic storyline and the prequel to one of the most successful games of all time.

#2. Age of Mythology.I really liked the story of this game. It felt very diverse and expanded historical cultures in a very fun and interesting way.

#3. Age of Empires 1-2. I'm quite interested in history and AoE 1-2 have campaigns that were really fun.

I have to say Red Alert 2, hands down. I think i played through the campaign like 10 times as a kid. Absolutely LOVE that game. The gameplay combined with the cutscenes that wasn't animated was so cool I thought when i was a kid (now i realize how terrible the actors are). And Tanya was hawt ). The Yuri expansion wasn't good though in my opinion

You biased nerds!

Every Westwood RTS were great! BW came close though. EA had to ruin it all with adding Yuri to the story and fucking up Kane's character. I Loved the Dune series. :D :D :D

C&C and RA were great but Dune was the best. :D

Warcraft 3 and it's expansion are the only RTS single player games I've ever really liked, and played through to the finish for everything no cheating.

Starcraft 1 has the nostalgic factor, and the story was actually amazing...but it was just so long ago, and I pretty much was a little cheating bastard back in those days. Good lord I was bad at the game xD

But that was before I knew what starcraft REALLY was, and thankfully iccup saved me YEARS later.

But ya, Warcraft 3, fuckin amazing campaign.

Homeworld 2. It fixed alot of the slower elements of its predecessor while still keeping the excellent larger-than-life feel and amazing atmosphere.

Loved moments like this. The soundtrack is simply superb. 720p this for sure.

Also one of my favorite moments in Homeworld 1 was encountering the Swarmers in the Garden of Kadesh.

"If you will not join, then die. There is no withdrawal from the Garden..."

Fuck there were sooooo many of them in that mission >_<

WC3 both reign of chaos and frozen throne were absolutely a blast. They were quite awesome.
Other than that I recall the red alert 2 campaign being quite good as well.
Now when I think about it the red alert 2 campaign was probably on an even stage with the WC3 ones. I spent hours and hours on that game when I was younger.

Warcraft 1 was the most fun experience for me, but I guess it was because I was younger, nowadays I can't stand RTS campaigns.

The campaigns in Age of Empires 1 and 2 were the best in my experience. Each game contained about 5 historical and accurate campaigns that weren't just "build a base and kill all AI", but actually were interesting. There was the William Wallace Campaign and the Joan of Arc Campaign that I think were the best.

Warcraft:RoC and TFT were quite a blast, I play them through every few years when I get the urge.

RA2 was also quite hilarious because of the cheesy cinematics.

Rise of Legends and Age of Mythology weren't half bad either.

Despite what people say I found the WoL campaign excellent as far as the mission design goes. Never liked campaigns where you had to just create a massive army and roll the retarded AI.

Also remembered Supreme Commander+Forged Alliance. Who doesn't love continuous pumping of T3 units+experimentals and nukes going off everywhere.

Now I realized that the OP asked for my favorite campaign so I'm gonna go with WC3 and WoL sharing first place and SupCom coming in close second.

Homeworld probably had my favorite RTS campaign, I played through it multiple times. It's also a fun campaign to play in that your army carries over between levels and you can either build an invincible fleet or lose everything in one level and be screwed for the remaining part of the game.

The WC3 campaigns were also a lot of fun to play, I liked the aspect the heroes added to the game.

Alright, enough.

William Wallace -

1) There MAY have been a Bridge involved in the Battle of Stirling Bridge (the third last mission)...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Stirling_Bridge

2) Scotland lost at the Battle of Falkirk (the last mission)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Falkirk

The end of the campaign was actually akin to what happened after the Battle of Bannockburn

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Bannockburn

I'm not pissy about you enjoy the campaign, but dont assume it is accurate and DEFINITELY dont assume Braveheart was accurate either.

i got bored of WoL campaign after the like 1st 3 missions lol. the story/narrative was really lame and the gameplay itself was really easy/boring. this is probably just because i was so used to really competitive BW that it was just unbearably easy (basically the campaign felt like I was just waiting for a clock to rundown or for an AI unit to reach a destination the whole time) for me.

Im sure someone with no real BW experience would of liked it more but i thought it was just boring as shit.

I really liked world in conflict and the first company of heroes campaigns. although bear in mind i was still a newb so I thought they were really fun. perhaps if they came out after I got really back in BW i would of found them dull as well and i would feel the same way about them as I had SC2.

although as said before, WiC has such as amazing narrative. easily the best for an RTS game ever, and it still stick around with me now as one of the more memorable game narratives in the last 5 years. a very cool game and I really wish the game was more popular :\.

Age of Empires 2 original campaigns. They were scattered across the different cultures, and fairly short, but I liked the historical tie ins, especially as a kid.

Warcraft series, even though I never played past the first 2 it was a great story and I followed it all the way through just cause it was that good.

But my favorite is Age of Empires for sure. So many good campaigns.

Yeah AOE2 campaigns were fucking insane.
The narrations at the beginning of the levels with the book and drawings and the pages turning were so epic.....holy shit.

I also liked the Novaya Russia Campaign in Empire Earth 1.

Halo Wars on the Xbox 360. I love the game the cgi was absolutely amazing and the controls and the missions made sense and weren't the easiest. Tons of replay value. Might sound stupid but I have fun replaying it.

If this is based on favorite, then RA2 takes my top spot like others have mentioned in this thread. The slapstick cutscenes/acting somehow fit perfectly.

SCBW, SC2, and DoW2, in that order. Broodwar because I just had so many good memories of it. SC2 because it has some of the most well designed missions I have seen in a traditional base building rts. Some of them weren't as cool as others, but you have to stay on your toes going into each one, since you never know what precisely you'll be doing. And DoW2 simply because the tactical gameplay in campaign was just so satisfying. Gibbing puny eldar squads is why I played the campaign, though the boss fights were really retarded.

I'm not just saying this because it's a SC forum, but SC2 campaign was DAMN fun, I even played through it like 3 times. Sure the story was dumb, but I don't care, the game play was amazing and every level was unique, definitely more fun than SC1 campaigns.

I also remember C&C Generals was pretty fun. And Company of Heroes was really fun because I enjoy WW2 a lot but that game was difficult some of the missions were ridiculously hard.

Story line and campaign is definitely Age of Mythology Gold Edition, I like the missions and gameplay overall. :D
With an average game length of 7m36s over his 6 games in GSL3, this is a no-brainer. BitByBit pulls more SCVs than yo momma at a club on Mar Sara. ♞

Warcraft 3 was incredibly fun, and insane mode is so challenging it makes for some awesome micro practice :D Also replaying it after getting into WoW has this really weird effect that makes it feel more... personal? I dunno, but I love it.

Myth and Myth 2 Soulblighter will always be number one in my heart.

Then WC3, Then SCBW and then SC2. Just couldn't get THAT into the campaign of SC2 due to so many story lines just ending without a real conclusion or any connection to the rest of the campaign.

WoL has by far the best gameplay design of any RTS ive played. Most of them seemed to follow the same formula, namely "build base, make army, run over enemy base. rinse/repeat, but this time with a bigger enemy base". WC3 changed that, but it still felt tedious running around with heroes to try and find the good secret items.

After that SC1 vanilla, Brood War and then maybe stuff like Age of Empires because of the little history lessons. I actually remembered quite a lot as a kid and then aced all my history tests. ^_^

Def Wc3 and its expansion.

SC2 campaign was just bad. Decent gameplay, but it didn't really match the addictive fun of stacking up your heroes and soloing bases (Illidan, Frozen Throne Human campaign soloed the game on hard with him lol.)

And the story. don't get me started on that lol.

Gotta agree with the consensus here. WC3 and RA2
Seriously, turning the Eiffel Tower into an omgwtfbbqmegadeathlazor never gets old. So many wacky, out there missions in that game, but enough normal build base --> steamroll missions too. And RA2 is a riot anyway.
WC3 campaign needs no introduction. The campaign was just epic.

Age of empire 1, in one of the first missions, was this: they gave you a single priest and it was up to you to convert a villager and destroy two different civs. :D

BEST LEVEL EVER. I played that level so many freaking times... that one priest was a fucking commando priest. It was like playing as the symbian lybanese army in a video game.

War 3 hands down for me.

Between everything going on between Arthas and Illidan I can't vote for any other RTS. They had the badass rivalry and badass back stories to match.

SC2 was pretty meh, as was said earlier in this thread. It needed a reformed Paladin and a Demon Hunter. Instead you were constantly reminded how fragile, but important, you were to the grand scheme of things.

Playing through the campaign with hero units lends itself to story better I think. Like in War 3 Frozen Throne when you're losing levels as a Death Knight, and gaining them as a Crypt Lord, you have to fight a boss. Crypt Lord labels the enemy as truly powerful and goes, "FIGHT AS YOU'VE NEVER FOUGHT BEFORE."

Got me all fired up.

Well, not in the traditional sense. No base building/resource gathering.

I guess it's more of a RTT... Real Time Tactical.

Hard to fit it in a genre, as there aren't really any games that play quite like Myth. The multiplayer was so much fun.

I would have to say that my favorite campaign of all time in an RTS was the Campaign to Star Wars: Empire at War. I played it before i startred playing StarCraft, and retrospectively, the game pales in mechanics and strategy compared to StarCraft. The multiplayer was a bit lackluster, but the campaign was just great. Not only could you relive some of the best moments of Star Wars, but it was a totally different game alltogether. The fact that units had to be created before the battle began totally made the focus of battles on the micro and the space battles especially were pretty micro intensive, since the inclusion of individual hard points on major capital ships added certain strategic depth when launching an attack. Add to that that planets could be controlled and managed, fleets created and launched to strategic spots and Lord Vader could be used just made the campaign just one heck of a fun experience.
and there was something deeply satisfying about using the Death Star to blow up a planet. Where else could the Death Star clear the planet of Yavin 4 and fire off its shot before Luke could fire the proton torpedos into the exhaust port?

I remember quite a few good RTS that were good in quite a few ways, I rate them by difficulty and fun, and presentation.

Dungeon Keeper 1 - For anyone who's played this they understand, it was an RTS and a First Person shooter where you played the bad guy, defending your realm from those good people. The in between stories were funny too =D. The music was especially notable

Empire Earth 1 - Long LONG LONG campaign takes you true cave man times, where you had holy men who could summon tornadoes and the likes, to futurist mechs. I believe it had about 14-17 ages instead of AoE's 4

Star Trek Armada 1 and 2 - Yeah I like Star Trek, these games were very good RTS games though, and had a great campaign, I remember in the Final Stage of Star Trek Armada 2, you could play as Borg and combine 8 cubes together to make a super cube >.> Nothing like assimilating everything in your path.

Also to note for the Armada series, the voice actors lent their voices.

AoE1 - For the Campaign, but online play was horrid and unbalanced. Some Civs could go T3 in 5 minutes and some could go T4 in 8 minutes.

AoE2 Age of Kings - Great online play mediocre Campaign. I was also known as "GodofWar" on AoE2, it came out before the GodofWar series ever did =/ Kratos copied me =( and I copied Aries.

Majesty - A great RTS, but played with a twist, you'd actually have to play it to understand and enjoy it.

SC1, WC3 and especially WC3:TFT were amazing. That's why Wings of Liberty felt like a let down. Homeworld was good too, especially the intro scenes and the music. I would only ever play the WC3 and TFT campaign again.

Don't think anyone can disagree that WC3 had the best campaign ever. The story, the cutscenes, the music were all top notch, none of that cheesy WoW stuff you see in Cata nowadays.

I really, really love warcraft 3... but SC2 was extremely well done and addicting. I even replayed it right away because I downloaded it first (Couldn't buy it right away but wanted to play badly - don't worry I bought it shortly after) and I couldn't keep the same save.

Hell I even got all achievements, and I'm no achievement whore. SC2 has the best single player for me.

SC2 campaign had some cool stuff in it, but story wise it wasn't that good. Too cheesy overall.

Probably, my fav campaigns would be:

- Warcraft 3 & Warcraft 3:TFT - amazing story, great characters and in-game scenes. They show how a perfect campaign should be.

- Starcraft & SC: Brood War - elaborated story, music, characters and scenes. Just amazing.

- Warhammer 40.000: Dawn of War - This game surprised me with a really well-developed story. Highly recommended.

I'd love to include SC2 between my favs but WoL does not deserve it. Let's see what happens with HotS and LotV exp and their campaigns...

Warcraft 3 was horribad, RA were a caricature of propagandist bullshit.

I would say Warcraft 2 and BW. I can't believe that after all the epicness of W2, they manage to make somethinng as horribad as the scenario of W3 and WoW.

Hm, I'd probably say Warcraft II Tides of Darkness before they wrecked the Elves and Orcs... similar to what's happening to the Zerg in SCII.

Followed by Starcraft BW and Command & Conquer 1.

Then I'd put SC2, but as far as varied missions/ gameplay- definitely SC2 is at the top.

I think mission-wise, SC2 had a pretty good campaign but story-wise... blegh. This time it really is WarCraft3 in space: The Fallen One (ie: Archimonde) is going to destroy the universe (Azeroth) and all of this is foretold by the Prophecy (Oracle/THE PROPHET!!!). He was going to use the Zerg to do it (corrupted Orcs), but they managed to free themselves through Kerrigan (Thrall), so now he has a hybrid army (the Burning Legion) to do it and the only one who can stop them is Kerrigan (Thrall by uniting the races). What makes it even worse, is that some of the music in the Terran campaign (fx: Safe Haven, I think) sounds like it was lifted directly from the Human campaign in WC3.

It was the story of StarCraft and Brood War that made them amazing campaigns (not so much the missions, they were average for the most part). And why? Because there was no cataclysmic event foretold in the future! You had no idea that Mengsk would leave Kerrigan to die. Or that she would be turned into the Queen of Blades by the Overmind. And I remember vividly sitting in front of my screen during the end of SC1, thinking "No, Tassadar, don't do it!" when he steered the Gantrithor head-first into the Overmind.

Story-wise, StarCraft and Brood War are like The Usual Suspects: you really don't know who Keyser Söze is, whereas Wings of Liberty is like Face/Off where you know all along how things will pan out.

BEST LEVEL EVER. I played that level so many freaking times... that one priest was a fucking commando priest. It was like playing as the symbian lybanese army in a video game.

Holy shit that mission was so good! I must have done it so many times that wolololo is still stuck in my head.

I love the lore in the W3+TFT campaign. I couldn't care less about the story in SC2, but the missions were awesome. "Hey let's put this giant thor in the game, that'll kick ass" and asses were kicked.

I liked the AoEII campaign because it sort of taught you history in a fun way. What 6-year old kid knew about Jean D'Arc, but us AoEII players? The missions weren't exactly diverse, but I had a lot of good times.

The C&C Generals campaign was pretty awesome. The story is, again, terribad. But I flooded some innocent people's houses by breaking a dam. That'll teach 'em to be innocent.

I really liked the level designs in the CoH campaign. It could be pretty challenging at times. It's WOII so there's no great story to speak of, but it didn't bother me.

Don't think anyone can disagree that WC3 had the best campaign ever. The story, the cutscenes, the music were all top notch, none of that cheesy WoW stuff you see in Cata nowadays.

Of course I can disagree.

It was way too easy and some missions were just boring. What you mentioned was really top notch, but there is a thing called gameplay, and that matters to me a whole lot.

Z is/was so much better in singleplayer. It's so old that not many people know that game, but the gameplay was extremely refreshing, the cutscenes were very funny and it is much much harder than any of the mainstream rts mentioned .

I'd pick drunk robots over Arthas and Illidan any day of the week, even tho WC3 will always stay my fav rts.

Red Alert 1. I remember how amazed I was by the "real graphics" in the film sequences. For those who haven't played the game, in RA the sequences were filmed with real actors, but the compressions of that time was so ridiculously bad that you could hardly see anything. Or maybe it was just that the computers at the time were too slow to show "TV-quality" film sequences. My first computer had a 100Mhz processor, which is 1/20 of what I have today. Ah, those were the days. Windows 95 and the 2 minute long startup time. No internet. Today's generation is spoiled with totally unneccessary high def graphics.

I remember I liked the WC3 campaign too, for the "story".

Edit: story, not graphics...

WC3 probably because I wasn't so cynical about quality of gameplay back then when I played thru it. It also has "THAT" feeling but maybe because games were different kind of back in days.

SC2 campaign has been awesome so far, but I haven't still even finished it.

Here's my list.

#1 Homeworld series - best campaign ever. And they're pretty challenging too.
#2 Armies of Exigo - campaign was very nice and again, pretty challenging at times. Large variety of missions too.
#3 WarCraft III: Reign of Chaos - human -> undead campaign transition is the best thing ever. Was a lot of fun. TFT wasn't nearly this good.
#4 Earth 2140 - really nice.
#5 Red Alert series - cut scenes were the shiznit, pretty enjoyable overall.

That would be the top 5 RTS campaigns off the top of my head.

Honorable mentions:
Warhammer 40.000: Dawn of War
Company of Heroes, with all the bonus campaigns they added in expansions
Dungeon Keeper series
Sacrifice
Myth

Oh I love DK and DK2. That last mission on DK2 though.. holy hell. I don't even remember if I ever managed to beat it lol.

For me Wc3, but I haven't played many RTS's besides blizzard and AoE

Even though the SC2 story wasn't that great, the missions were fun and varied in style. I enjoyed the campaigns of Age of Mythology, Company of Heroes and Warcraft 3

Hah, tell me about it. I might go dig out my copies of the original C&C and Red Alert... I sank so much time into those games in LAN games against my brother.

Overall I'd say WC3: RoC has the best RTS campaign, although I haven't played a bunch of games mentioned in this thread. I must have completed it about 5 or 6 times at varying difficulty levels, never gets old.

For me, no other RTS campaign comes close to WC3. Amazing story, amazing gameplay.

Myth: The Fallen Lords, and Myth II: Soulblighter. I've played through those goddamn campaigns start to finish like 5+ times. And I love it every single time!

Such good games omg

edit:
Also, Armies of Exigo. This was another awesome game that just never got the attention it deserved.
WC3 vanilla had an awesome campaign too. I really loved all the random units in it. Silly, sure, but I loved facing armies composed entirely of unique units you'd never see in multiplayer. Entire new races to defend and/or battle against was very fun. That being said, I did not at all enjoy the Naga in TFT. They just felt dumb, but oh how I loved rampaging against those high-elf armies!

I admire your commitment to being *very* oily

C&C1 - Classic story, funny videos, first of its kind
Red Alert - Weird story, but super funny cut sequences
WC3 - Very nice story and good mission design + some hidden lvls and stuff + epic blizz animations
Homeworld - Epic story

Not sure bout WoL. Doing a snd run right now.
Too much future star sheriff stuff, story wise. Mission design is quite good, but often relies on "build-featured-unit" and not "think-about-best-strategy". Like the upgrade stuff to individualize your run.
Hope other campaings will improve.

- Red Alert 2 + Yuri's Revenge was fucking awesome, Kari Wuhrer was HOT :D

- Tiberian Sun + Firestorm, the real life cutscenes is Westwood's glory

- SC + BW, the story was really deep and meaningful, great dialogues and missions.

- Majesty: The Fantasy Kingdom + Northern Expansion (ungodly difficult!) I loved it and played it a lot.

- I never got past Homeworld's 2nd/3rd mission and no longer have it.

- The WC3 campaigns and cutscenes where all good at the time although the MP experience sucked.

- Company of Heroes was fucking Amazing! So realistic and authentic recreation of WW2.

- Dungeon Keeper 2, never ever gets old, fucking brilliant campaign.

- AoE2 & AoM had lots of great campaigns and story arcs.

- There are probably many others I could mention but I'm out of one liners.

WC3: RoC and TFT for me. Great character development, setting, and plot.

SC: Memorable characters and lines. As for BW, the storyline went downhill sort of.

SC2: WoL campaign was lacking setting, even though they basically stayed in the Koprulu Sector. Going from world to world too many times just threw away most of the story. In the original Starcraft, you had many worlds too, but they didn't jump so much per episode campaign and they were revisited several times. Character development was lacking if you did not read the novels... Hope they do better in HotS.

C&C: Tiberian Dawn - Nod Campaign - Gosh, i was so satisfied destroying the Eiffel Tower
Clips also were amazing (and C&C just devolved since the first game when it comes to good music, cutscenes and ideas).

Myth II was has one of the most engaging campaigns i've ever played. Plus the fact that the narrator sounded a lot like Sean Connery was cool.

But i'd have to say World at War has the best campaign and the best story.

Warcraft 3 Reign of Chaos and the Frozen Throne are probably the best RTS campaigns I've ever played. The story and characters were very intruiging. I've played them both several times.
Wings of Liberty was fun to play, but I didn't enjoy the story as much.

Generals campaign was awesome to play i remember. Most of the C&C as well. And sure the WC3 campaign where fun when i where little but man it is SO dumb And the gameplay of SC2 sure is fun but the story is even worse than wc3. And my favorite is Starcraft and Broodwar :3 but since being enlightened by Fanatic Templar i realized that the story of broodwar is indeed dumb as well. But i still love the lore of Starcraft the most!

Three Kingdoms: Fate of the Dragon for storyline and Total Annihilation for difficulty. I hated playing those missions where the planet was mostly water. Stupid Core would get their battleships and killed all my stuff early.

Homeworld/Homeworld 2, hands down! Epic story, the whole thing is so tragic, but the faction that you control deals with everything with stoicism and a level head. It's a wonderful, eerie feeling that you don't get nowadays, where there's a tendency to sensationalize everything.

World in Conflict was a very good campaign because you could relate to the characters and the missions were fun. Other campaigns I liked were age of mythology, dawn of war both 1 and 2 and the expansions minus soulstorm.

That is a tough call. I think I really enjoyed C&C Red Alert Soviet campaign the most. It was campy, sure, but in a good way. Also + Show Spoiler +
Kane showing up at the end was A++

Some others are really close though, like WarCraft 3 and SC1.

Warrior Kings Battles. It was an epic game were you could have 800 units at the end of a game. So much time playing the game.

LOVED THAT GAME

Warcraft3 RoC/TFT was SO good!

just, wow

the hero system really worked well with the campaign too ^_^

the story, level design, etc., was all epic (good, and the actual literal feel of epic -- grand battles good vs evil tragedy drama etc.)

My favourite RTS campaign comes from the first RTS game I ever played, I was only 10 or 11 at the time so it may just be major nostalgia goggles. The game was called Impossible Creatures and it was a lot different from any RTS I played since, basically you'd create your own units by combining two different real life creatures, it was also based in the 80s so the music was awesome!

I thought the WoL campaign was pretty meh, although it was fairly diverse in objectives.
