Like I was lucky to get more than 1 kill per game, terrible at skiing, felt like I might as well been unarmed... I couldn't even prevent cappers from taking flag as a heavy by standing on the flag...! I assume TA has a similar learning curve, but with more noobs? How does one best improve at this damn game? Just persistence? Tribes Ascend is infinity easier than any previous Tribes game for new players. It still has a sharper learning curve than today's traditional FPS games but you'll be fine after playing for a bit.

You weren't even playing vs good players, goon haven players are notoriously bad (unless the capper was a smurf, or under a real name...not uncommon). And just playing it is the best way to improve. Ski around a map to get used to skiing and play TDM to perfect aim. Holy shit, really? Lol. I probably won't be going back to T2 for a while then. And glad to hear I won't get killed a thousand times before I figure out the basics of TA.

Being in the air doesn't guarantee safety by a long shot. If youre fighting a pathfinder, being in the air close to them either means youll get shotgunned or spinfusored. Fighting a ranger, you can get rifled down both in close and long ranges or if theyre particularly good they can thumper you at medium/long distances in the air. For people who arent as used to the Tribes fighting style, being in the air is a pretty good guarantee for safety. Once you start getting better and start fighting better players though, youll realize that you need to dodge in the air almost as much as you do on the ground. Hitscan weapons arent needed to make being in the air still a dangerous position.

The extra durability on the soldier, at minimal expense of speed, simply makes all of the difference for me. I average like twice as many kills with a soldier than I do with a pathfinder. Pathfinder is typically for flag running and is really good at it. Not that you can't be a good duelist or make frags with a Pathfinder it's just that medium armors such as Raider, Soldier and Ranger will excel in head on battles more.

EDIT: Newb sniper here, and please, continue assuming the air is safe. It makes getting kills SO much easier.

Ski around a map to get used to skiing and play TDM to perfect aim. Eh, as much as GH has rap, it's not that terrible - It has changed much since its launch at TribesNext release. The player count is smaller, the worst "casuals", nostalgia trippers, and newbies have left long since. As the player count has dwindled, the average skill level has also increased. People forget what kind of places pubs used to be. Like with SC, even the casual pub baddies that are playing have been playing for years. For someone jumping right in it can seem daunting in comparison. Yesterday's pub nub is today's pub all-star, etc. Plus, as the T2 "competetive" community is super small and GH is the only viable pub, it does get frequented by all the "good"/decent players that still care for pubbing. It's just that people often choose to not play very seriously when pubbing.

How in the hell are you supposed to 100 - 0 some guy with that thing? I barely hit one in 20 shots. You're only gonna 100-0 someone with it in a few situations. 1. You sneak up behind someone standing still (sniper) and can get within like 10ft 2. You match speeds perfectly with someone skiing and can just level them from close range. 3. You get next to a heavy who is completely out of jet. What almost everyone does is hit the target with one thumper shell then chase and spray them down from half health, which is very easy. Also remember that you have tons of shots, ammo is cheap, who cares if you waste a ton if you get the kill. Obviously accuracy is better but if you can just wear them down with 2 clips in one of those duels where nobody can land a projectile, thats fine, still got the kill.
