I mean, just don't let them do it if you can't fix it. - navigating around the world for quests is frustrating - when you die you return to last save and have to redo inventory and drink potions, repeat story line... rather more appealing to just turn it off at that point than repeat the last 10 minutes. -drinking potion system is a joke, and crafting adds very little to the game, time consuming and you must have foresight in order to know when to drink on. Its not necessary since the game gets easier as you go along, just pick up a sword and you'll be fine, don't even bother picking anything else up that isn't a quest item it just wastes time when you have to drop things because you feel as if you need them later on when you don't. -Completing the game ends abruptly and is a mystery, I'm still confused as to why it ended the way it did because I thought it was just getting going. I wont be going back to it screw wasting time on other story lines. Game was a lot harder at the start and way too easy at the end. -Over hyped and majority of my friends have given up during Act 1.
-On the positive side, the graphics were good, I'm sure some people appreciated the sex scenes, at least they got something for their money.
- The dialogue isn't childish, it's incredibly engaging. Curse words do not equal childish, especially in the setting that the Witcher 2 is set in, sorry your modern day standards that say cursing is bad make the game bother you, but not really. - Invisible doors are annoying, so is mechanically jumping down cliffs, but you can't do everything you want with a game, there's these things called a budget and technological walls (plus you have to make sure the game will run on enough systems to make sure producing it is worth the cost). - Navigating around the World for quests is not frustrating, in fact it's one of the RPG's I've had the easiest time doing quests for, nearly all of them are self explanatory and those that aren't are generally built TO get you to explore the World, you don't have to do them to finish the game even on the hardest difficulty. - Drinking potion system is not a joke, I find it incredibly interesting, for starters it makes more logical sense that you'd need to drink a potion and let the effects of it actually enter your blood stream before it takes effect (as opposed to chugging mid combat) and it also makes you feel like Geralt is more of a human being who actually has to prepare for battle which I think psychologically enhances the game. It's not necessary again, but that also adds layers to the game as well. As for crafting I'd say it adds quite a lot to the game considering a good deal of lore regarding Witchers deals with Magic and Alchemy, I went down the Swordsman path my first play through and I still greatly enjoyed using both potions and bombs. - "The game was just getting going" Are you serious? Just how much play time do you expect out of a single player RPG for $60 dollars? Thousands? - If a majority of your friends gave up they suck, thank God they wont buy future installments of the game and thus wont have an impact on how the makers build and balance it.
I realize part of what you posted was opinion but you tried to peddle a lot of it as facts that were just flat out wrong.
Edit: Also, what Zains said.
Edit2: Plus the story is incredibly good. There are naysayers, but there are naysayers for every story every made.

Worth noting that patch 1.3 came out, and it's a big patch with a lot of fixes, changes, and some additional content. Here.

just finished playing this + the original game, soooo much fun. i loved the plot and story from both games but the 2nd one had so many funny parts lol. i dont think they have said anything about a 3rd but i dont think they will leave it hanging since + Show Spoiler +geralt knows where his woman is i enjoyed it so much that i purchased a couple of the witcher novels (blood of elves + the last wish) which were pretty good reads too
i do kinda agree with the difficulty, although its still far more difficult than most rpgs ive played (which is good.) its not necessarily hard at the start, its just time consuming but it does get pretty easy later on. i finished the game on hard and the hardest parts imo were the summoner (coz i had that gay skill that made my quen reflect onto other targets so one gargoyle hit drained it -_-) and playing as the ghosts in the eternal battle. still, really engaging story and i like the hard choices you have to make during the game.
anyone know of any similar games?

Dragon age origins is pretty similar in terms of story and world, though more tactical than action oriented, and is much more high fantasy than dark fantasy, though its still pretty dark.
Overall I thought this was a great game. The writing was really good, but the ending disappointed me. I wish they didn't leave a cliffhanger if they are continuing with the 4 year release schedule. Thats just cruel. I was impressed at how well it was optimized. I could run everything on ultra without ubersampling and it ran at 60 fps.
Has anyone here read the books, are they any good? I can only find the short story collection at my local bookstore, haven't found any english translations of the entire series anywhere.

Hmm, seems like there is a big update, version 2.0, coming up on September 29th. I have yet to finish the game (only on chapter 2) since I was sidetracked with other games, so this might be a good chance for me to do so.
Here are the main details that I copy and pasted. Looks really interesting with the new modes and difficulty (people might actually try "Insane" now on Dark Difficulty Setting). I'm also curious on all the technical updates and improvements of the game.
Oh yeah, and the game is currently on sale, 25% off at 30 US Dollars. For those who haven't bought the game yet, this would be a good time. The big updates from CD Projekt RED have always been good. Just like the original Witcher Enhanced Edition.
Main Features:
Completely New, Extensive Tutorial System - The new tutorial helps players fully enjoy the game from the very beginning and systematically explains the depth of The Witcher 2’s combat and gameplay mechanics. It allows gamers to be gradually and smoothly immersed in the game world and Geralt’s adventures.
Special Dark Difficulty Setting - A new, intensely challenging difficulty setting that provides the ultimate challenge for players. On the Dark setting, The Witcher 2 is nearly as difficult as Insane, but allowing players to save the game. It also provides a completely new set of dark-themed gear with very high stats such as:
18 new equip-able items including 3 new sets of dark armor (light, medium, and heavy) 3 new sets of dark swords (3 silver, 3 steel) Other Dark themes/elements in the game
Completely New Arena Mode - Infinitely re-playable and progressively more challenging, Arena lets you hone your combat style and techniques against all the different monster types from the game. Dispatch wave upon wave of progressively more difficult enemies, earning awards that you can use to upgrade abilities, weapons and armor, and to test alchemy. Hirelings can also assist you in battle for a price. Combat waves will continue infinitely until your character is defeated, when you’ll see a statistical summary of results. Players can share their results with their friends by uploading this summary to the forums or to Facebook. Arena Mode includes:
New location, with a dynamic, responsive audience reacting to the events A new monster type, Werewolf Waves of different opponents, looped with increasing levels of difficulty 3 different prizes to choose from in each wave 3 new characters (mage, knight, and dwarven fighter) that can serve as allies during clashes A shopkeeper offering gear and enhancements 3 new GUI panels designed specifically for the mode New dialogue New background music New Witcher Forum and Facebook integration
Technical Bliss - Version 2.0 includes all previous and new technical and gameplay enhancements such as:
40+ new technical and gameplay enhancements 100+ previous technical and gameplay fixes All 9 previous DLC packs - Troll Trouble, Roche Commando Jacket, Ultimate Alchemy Suit, Ultimate Magical Suit, Ultimate Swordsman Suit, Finisher Pack, Mysterious Merchant, Barbers and Coiffeuses, A Sackfull of Fluff
The Witcher 2, in its most definitive version 2.0, will be available on the 29th of the September through automatic update for free, for all existing and new users (all new installations will update to version 2.0 automatically during game installation process).

"All DLC for the PC version is and will remain FREE," development director Adam Badowski told Rock Paper Shotgun. "That's not likely to be the story for the Xbox version, because of certain Microsoft policies that need to be followed. But on PC, once you buy our game, you don't need to worry about any additional costs – we will provide all updates, including those featuring new content, for free." They just sold me.

Can anybody that has played the game pre and post-patch comment with their opinion on the overall feel of the game, please? I'm considering picking this title up now.
What steered me away from it initially was all the rolling and quen-abuse I saw from a few streams which just made the game ridiculously easy.

I've been looking forward to the new update. Don't quite have time to play it though. Looks pretty awesome for when I do get a chance however.

What steered me away from it initially was all the rolling and quen-abuse I saw from a few streams which just made the game ridiculously easy. Well they are nerfing quen a bit I think and blocking is improved. Rolling is still an option for anyone that wants to do combats without being in much danger (but from personal experience doing a lot of rolling gets boring fast so I stopped rolling unless I get surrounded). Also by the patch notes combat should be much more smooth and responsive so the whole thing should be more enjoyable to play.
I will be installing the patch today or over the weekend and can give you more indepth information. I also got stopped in Act 2 playing other games that I found more fun at that moment (and lack of time stopped me as Witcher 2 needs hours of interrupted playtime to completely enjoy as all the lore and exploration and conversations need you to immerse yourself in them).
But I would suggest you buy it anyways, the game is still the best RPG game this year (so far).

It was definitely a good game.
For the person above asking for a similar game, Dragon Age is similar in story terms, but the combat is much more RPG-ish and less about control. For a game that has similar combat I'd recommend Dark Souls (coming out next week) or it's predecessor Demon Souls. While I think the combat is similar (including melee / range / magic mix) it's a lot harder and there is less RPG story. It still has quite a nice atmosphere however, and the new one should be a good game

What steered me away from it initially was all the rolling and quen-abuse I saw from a few streams which just made the game ridiculously easy. the game feels much improved to me after the patch. i (and many others, but not all) experienced input lag and frame stuttering and the game just missing inputs sometimes. after the patch the game just feels more responsive as a whole, and performance has improved as well. as a result the game feels easier to play.
as a huge demon's souls fan i really enjoyed the combat in the witcher 2, but rolling to find good attack angles is not something i mind, in fact i find it more fun the most other rpg combat. just for the record the dev's of TW2 said that demon's souls was a huge influence on the combat.
the actual rpg mechanics like dialogue etc are really second to none imo. if you like cRPG's TW2 is a no brainer.

So, I'm considering picking up this game now that I have a comp that can handle it.
Is it worth starting at Witcher 1 or do I go straight to #2?
|
Nah, personally when I tried to play TW1 again just before TW2 release it really felt dated. I did not feel like the game aged well at all. Of course if you can get it for cheap and just want to try it out by all means please do. It's worth learning the story though, whether you play TW1 or read about it online you should probably do that if you care about story lines at all.
So excited to try all the new features in the patch but just don't have time to play it right now.

I find it really hard to say if someone will enjoy the original game. It's definatelly good, but it has major flaws. The combat system feels a little strange and it's really not a polished game, but the story and the setting overall are pretty good. The whole ambiguity of your choices, things turning out diferently than expected and not knowing if you are actually doing the right thing are major points in the series and better explored in the original. It depends on what you are looking for in the game and wether you can stand it's flaws, for me it was definatelly worth it.
As for the continuity, I don't think you would have too many problems starting at the second one, but it is a direct sequel, so knowing what happened in the first one is always good.

Go for the Witcher 1 first. It is a great, great game, and you'll be able to familiarize yourself with what's going on in the realm and the lore. It is full of rich details and dark humour, good quests and great characters.
When you make a decision, you have no idea how they'll turn out, but later on you see the consequences and think "Damn, I had no idea how that would turn up." The second game is weaker in this sense in my opinion. First game was really awesome in this regard.
|
I'm playing this again. It's amazing how different things turn out based on certain decisions. The combat is more responsive now that they've patched it and the game still looks incredible, especially in chapter 1.
|
played like two hours of the unpatched version, then put it down as I couldn't get myself to dedicate time to the game at the time, I want to, but everytime I startup something else instead, gonna retry this after I get my new pc and got bored of BF3 :p
|
I only played the first chapter of the unpatched version, but after the huge patch fixing combat I've finished & started second playthrough. To say it's a lot better would be an understatement.
|
Yeah it's definitely better.
Just finished my second playthrough and I really recommend playing the game twice, you don't get the full perspective otherwise. The first time I beat the game the ending felt quite bad, but the second time I thought it made sense and I actually like it.
