Sony have annonced their new portable console, the NGP (for Next Generation Portable).
We don't have all the caracteristics yet, but it's suposed to be as powerful as a ps3.
Here the official statistics revealed :
* CPU: ARM Cortex-A9 core (4 cores) * GPU : SGX543MP4+ * RAM : unknown? * stockage : New Game Media, internal flash memory * screen: 5 inch(12,7 cm, 16) OLED touch-screen with a 960x544 resolution * connectivity: WiFi, 3G, GPS, Bluetooth 2.1 + compatible EDR ( compatible A2DP/AVRCP/HSP) * front and back camera * controls : touch-screen, tactical touchpad in the back
Here is the presentation video :
well if those caracteristics are true, i'm impressed. we ye have to know the autonomy and the *gulp* price.
It all comes down to library of games though. Personally I felt that the PSP always tried too hard to just be a tiny console and featured too many games that didn't really take portability into account. That's why I preferred the DS last generation. This seems to carry the path of the PSP in the same direction.

Hm, this looks just like the PSP which I never got comfortable with. Too bulky, too expensive, and people playing on it on the train or elsewhere are just way too absorbed. Kinda hard to explain, I like the approach of the DS much more.
I'm so psyched about this and its potential. I bought my PSP a couple years ago on impulse and it's easily turned into one of my best gaming investments ever, with easily half my game time being on Monster Hunter hahahaha.
Definitely glad they obviously decided to put in the second joystick so that FPS can finally be realistic, as FPS really didn't work very well on the original PSP. Some games did it well but overall definitely felt awkward.
Specs definitely sound awesome, though as long as it can play games which are realistic to a handheld of this generation then I don't really think much of them. Also impressed with the design of the thing as at first it seemed clunky but I really dig the iPhone 4 esque smooth and flat look.
The make it or break it for me would be the price (which if anything can be learned from the PSP1 at launch is probably going to be hefty) but if Sony nails this then no doubt I'd be buying it. Also hope they don't botch up digital vs retail sales and the pricing model for them as they did for the PSPgo.
TBH, this doesn't really interest me that much. At 960x544 resolution, it could be a total powerhouse and still only give small returns over an iPhone 4 or other GPU intensive smart phones. Unless it supports mobile internet connections and has access to features like Google Talk (or has some other method of making calls/txting, I find it hard to imagine it having widespread success. People just don't really want another bulky device in their pocket.
The dedicated analog stick and button pads will make playing games a lot easier, but it's not enough to promote it over a smartphone, considering that most mobile gamers just want something easy and fun to fill in time.
I'm not bashing the product (it looks excellent when contrasted with previous gen PSPs and the DS), and I'm sure there will be those to who it will appeal, but it's not for me.
it's a little bigger than the psp but still fir in a large pocket;
yeah its apparently as large as the PSP phat. The hardware itself along with the OS look very promising. The titles announced for it so far are pretty impressive most notably: Little Big Planet, Killzone, Uncharted, Resistance, and Wipeout. Several developers came in to showcase games such as Kojima porting MGS4 directly to the PSP2 with very minimal differences, as with SEGA porting Yakuza of the end. I have confidence that in e3 Sony will release the lineup along with several trump cards. A SSF4 or Mortal combat would be a nice addition to the diversity of the launch collection, not mention Kojima said he is announcing a new title for it in e3. If the Battery life is 5hrs+ and the price is 300bucks or less (350 would be a bit too much but it would still sell well if everything else is good) then this is going to be a great device to purchase. So hyped ^^ coming out this holiday too :3
Watch as sony slowly shaves away features closer to launch. They are always too ambitious for their own good like the original ps3 announcement which started out with 2 hdmi ports, new controller, 4usb ports card readers and ps2 backwards compatability of which half of those features never made it to launch and the other half arent on current ps3's.
However as always it will come down to the games. Maybe if they have a strong release with good launch games then they could get back into the game and outsell nintendo. But I doubt people are after ps3 remakes on the go which is pretty much what the psp does now.

Well... That certainly looks promising! :D But I must admit I'll be sticking with the DC unless they got a really impressive lineup of games coming out during launch.
It's rumored to have 1 GB of RAM, and it's a capacitive touchscreen on the back. Most likely capacitive on the front, too. Given the pixel-pushing abilities of the SGX 545MP4+ (the + may indicate more than 4 cores; not sure) and the screen resolution, close-to PS3 quality games just may be feasible.
Not gonna lie, Call of Duty will probably sell the PSP2 very well if marketed correctly.

EDIT: Well, at least it has two sticks. DS should have had a stick. 3DS should have had two.
Due to the smaller screen it doesn't need the same resolution for the same result and therefore doen't need as much power, so it very well could/will equal the PS3.
For me the most important thing will be how much you have to pay for the 3G on a monthly basis, I can't imagine it being for free but Sony has to subsidize it at least to some degree in order to make it a success.

They have sold 62 million PSPs. And while sales of the games in the USA have been less then stellar, in Japan they have been very strong. DS just did insanely well. PSP has done fine.
I definitely prefer my PSP to DS. I can't wait for PSP 2 to come out, looks amazing.
Considering I do all of my handheld gaming in my bed or on the sofa, within an arms reach of my big screen TV, and sony seem adamant in pursuing the 'console games on a handheld' direction, this device seems completely pointless. The DS held my interest because it's unique games held sway in a niche in my gaming habits. This seems expensive and redundant. I already own a ps3.
I love my old PSP, will be interesting to see where this ones goes. I don't really care for the cameras and some of the other stuff, but i suppose it's fine. I really hope the stupid problems with my old psp are fixed though. Like film compatibility, being able to fucking play music while doing other stuff etc etc. Nothing too major imo, except the compatibility bit, but some annoyances.
Curious as to the battery staying time though, that really has to be good. Anyways, I suppose I'll have to wait for some type of jailbreak to make me happy with it either way, so a long way off.
I think there's a lot of hate for the PSP around here, but I have to disagree. It has really been one of my best purchases, even though my parents and I always argue about it. I really like it because I don't have to hook it up to a TV or anything and I can just play wherever I feel like. I can play it laying down, and stuff. Plus, I really like the games on it, especially PES 2010, NCAA Football.
Wow, they've finally added a second joystick after releasing all those crappy PSP redesigns. I'm definitely interested in buying one as I'm a huge fan of handhelds, but with all the unneeded gimmicks I'm afraid it's going to cost like 400-500$ at launch -_-'
I also think I read somewhere that you won't be able to make calls with it, since they're already making a PSPhone for that.

what do you mean ? i posted an ingame video like 4 post before yours

Looks good but like all video game consoles (especially the handheld ones) I will wait for gen 2 since its often much improved and much better in terms of battery life and size etc.
First hand impression of the Sony NGP by Kotaku editor Brian Ashcraft.
Personally I have both a PSP and a DS. I play my DS far far far more often than my PSP so I am not sure if I will want a NGP or a 3DS. I feel that 3D is a little gimmicky but if the gen 2 model has a higher viewing angle than I may get it. I just enjoy the DS experience more.

At least there should be a lot of ps1 and ps2 classics in the psn store. When they presented it this morning they even showed a Lost Planet 2 port from the PS3 and they said it only took them 2 weeks to port it, but I'm not sure if you can belive that...
this new flash-card is weird. It's mean to be able to save your data directly on the game's card but also patch and DLC. it's pretty cool, but it meant to allow read/write on some part of the game's card. i think some people will gladly try to read/write something else than just the savedgames, patchs and dlc ^^
I might buy this since I enjoyed my PSP. Seeing as how this has the backing of a large number of Japanese developers, I hope it isn't region locked so I can play imports. One of the things I dislike about the 3DS is that it has region lock (the DS and GBA did not). I enjoyed many Japanese games on my PSP and hopefully I can do the same with the NGP.
Are DS and PSP sale prices lower than it takes to make them? I can imagine them not wanting to make a profit off their hardware if they can just have the consumer commit to their system only and buy their games.
The current PSP has Skype. But will the NGP? Because if it does, that could render a phone utterly meaningless. Sony was not willing to comment with Yoshida saying, "So, we are working on providing more than games — networked servies on the NGP. And we'll be able to talk more about these services later."
PlayStation Phone
There are pictures of what's reportedly a PlayStation Phone being taken apart on the internet and videos of people using it. But Sony didn't reveal a PlayStation Phone today. What gives? Where is it?
"I don't know where that's coming from," Yoshida said. "There are lots of cell phones on the internet."
Continuing, he added, "I can say that's not NGP." So that's something separate? Yes, he said: "That's something totally separate."
Making Them
Sony had working models available to play tonight. Which would mean that conceivably, Sony could go into production soon and start churning them out for everyone to buy and enjoy. "Hardware takes lots of steps. So the answer is 'no'. No, we cannot manufacture in mass production today or tomorrow. But we can later this year."
No doubt Sony will be able to answer more questions then, too.
Price
When I asked about price, Yoshida replied, "We are not talking about price yet, but I hope that when we announce the price, people will say it makes sense."
I asked Yoshida what he thought about the 3DS's US$250 price tag, to which he replied, "The 3DS is pricier than what Nintendo typically launched their hardware for." He said he thought the 3DS was "pretty interesting", adding that it feels like a more powerful DS.
I'll pay up to $299 for one but anything higher and I could just buy an entire console, probably for less.
Wow, seems really cool! I would never see my self buying one, but it certainly looks sexy~ I think it would be nice if they had a slightly slimmer profile on the analog sticks, but whatevs.
Does anyone else still call any portable game thing a game boy, like me? I called my friends little brothers DS a gameboy and he looked at me like i was speaking swahili. I guess that term hasn't been used for a while now...

I still have a Gameboy Classic and a Gameboy Advance, still play Advanced Wars occasionally
