Sony have annonced their new portable console, the NGP (for Next Generation Portable).

We don't have all the caracteristics yet, but it's suposed to be as powerful as a ps3.

Here the official statistics revealed :

* CPU: ARM Cortex-A9 core (4 cores)
* GPU : SGX543MP4+
* RAM : unknown?
* stockage : New Game Media, internal flash memory
* screen: 5 inch(12,7 cm, 16) OLED touch-screen with a 960x544 resolution
* connectivity: WiFi, 3G, GPS, Bluetooth 2.1 + compatible EDR ( compatible A2DP/AVRCP/HSP)
* front and back camera
* controls : touch-screen, tactical touchpad in the back

Here is the presentation video :

well if those caracteristics are true, i'm impressed. we ye have to know the autonomy and the *gulp* price.

EDIT :
- Editors that are on the NGP : http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=188067#14

- The battery will have a autonomy of 4-5hours

- first ingame video of unchated : http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=188067&currentpage=2#28

What is the CPU power compared to mobile intel and AMD counterparts?
What is the GPU power compared to mobile Nvidia and ATI counterparts?

Never been for such devices, you can't put in your pocket and isn't powerful enough in other cases to use as a standalone mini PC.

Sounds interesting. If it lives up to what Sony have said I can see no reason not to buy it.
Also the specs look tasty. How about a 6 core come on?

It all comes down to library of games though. Personally I felt that the PSP always tried too hard to just be a tiny console and featured too many games that didn't really take portability into account. That's why I preferred the DS last generation. This seems to carry the path of the PSP in the same direction.

The PSP was made to be hacked.

Hm, this looks just like the PSP which I never got comfortable with. Too bulky, too expensive, and people playing on it on the train or elsewhere are just way too absorbed. Kinda hard to explain, I like the approach of the DS much more.

I'm so psyched about this and its potential. I bought my PSP a couple years ago on impulse and it's easily turned into one of my best gaming investments ever, with easily half my game time being on Monster Hunter hahahaha.

Definitely glad they obviously decided to put in the second joystick so that FPS can finally be realistic, as FPS really didn't work very well on the original PSP. Some games did it well but overall definitely felt awkward.

Specs definitely sound awesome, though as long as it can play games which are realistic to a handheld of this generation then I don't really think much of them. Also impressed with the design of the thing as at first it seemed clunky but I really dig the iPhone 4 esque smooth and flat look.

The make it or break it for me would be the price (which if anything can be learned from the PSP1 at launch is probably going to be hefty) but if Sony nails this then no doubt I'd be buying it. Also hope they don't botch up digital vs retail sales and the pricing model for them as they did for the PSPgo.

TBH, this doesn't really interest me that much. At 960x544 resolution, it could be a total powerhouse and still only give small returns over an iPhone 4 or other GPU intensive smart phones. Unless it supports mobile internet connections and has access to features like Google Talk (or has some other method of making calls/txting, I find it hard to imagine it having widespread success. People just don't really want another bulky device in their pocket.

The dedicated analog stick and button pads will make playing games a lot easier, but it's not enough to promote it over a smartphone, considering that most mobile gamers just want something easy and fun to fill in time.

I'm not bashing the product (it looks excellent when contrasted with previous gen PSPs and the DS), and I'm sure there will be those to who it will appeal, but it's not for me.

Man, the nintendo has such an iron grip on the portable devices, this is really risky for Sony especially since their last one didn't do so well.

yeah its apparently as large as the PSP phat. The hardware itself along with the OS look very promising. The titles announced for it so far are pretty impressive most notably: Little Big Planet, Killzone, Uncharted, Resistance, and Wipeout. Several developers came in to showcase games such as Kojima porting MGS4 directly to the PSP2 with very minimal differences, as with SEGA porting Yakuza of the end. I have confidence that in e3 Sony will release the lineup along with several trump cards. A SSF4 or Mortal combat would be a nice addition to the diversity of the launch collection, not mention Kojima said he is announcing a new title for it in e3. If the Battery life is 5hrs+ and the price is 300bucks or less (350 would be a bit too much but it would still sell well if everything else is good) then this is going to be a great device to purchase. So hyped ^^ coming out this holiday too :3

Watch as sony slowly shaves away features closer to launch. They are always too ambitious for their own good like the original ps3 announcement which started out with 2 hdmi ports, new controller, 4usb ports card readers and ps2 backwards compatability of which half of those features never made it to launch and the other half arent on current ps3's.

However as always it will come down to the games. Maybe if they have a strong release with good launch games then they could get back into the game and outsell nintendo. But I doubt people are after ps3 remakes on the go which is pretty much what the psp does now.

It doesn't equal a PS3. If it does, five hundred and ninety nine U.S. dollars will look dirt cheap by comparison.

EDIT: Well, at least it has two sticks. DS should have had a stick. 3DS should have had two.

Well...
That certainly looks promising! :D
But I must admit I'll be sticking with the DC unless they got a really impressive lineup of games coming out during launch.

It's rumored to have 1 GB of RAM, and it's a capacitive touchscreen on the back. Most likely capacitive on the front, too. Given the pixel-pushing abilities of the SGX 545MP4+ (the + may indicate more than 4 cores; not sure) and the screen resolution, close-to PS3 quality games just may be feasible.

Not gonna lie, Call of Duty will probably sell the PSP2 very well if marketed correctly.

Due to the smaller screen it doesn't need the same resolution for the same result and therefore doen't need as much power, so it very well could/will equal the PS3.

For me the most important thing will be how much you have to pay for the 3G on a monthly basis, I can't imagine it being for free but Sony has to subsidize it at least to some degree in order to make it a success.
