Ben Cousins said in twitter couple days back, that this friday, they will announce a new Battlefield game. And now it's announced. It is Battlefield: Play4Free, which is basically a free Battlefield 2 mixed with BF:BC2. As a BF2 fan, i'm interested, but we'll see how this works out. Atleast something before BF3.
Some notable things about the game: - Free - 32 players - Popular maps from BF2 with classes and weapons from BF:BC2 (16 vehicles) - Players can learn skills, buy new equipment and weapons to craft a unique soldier.
Closed beta sign-ups are already started. Closed beta seems to be opening on 30th November. Open beta next year.
EA's announced a realistic first-person free-to-play PC Battlefield game set in the modern theatre of war and designed to appear to hardcore shooter fans.
It's called Battlefield: Play4Free, and looks like a cross between Battlefield 2 and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 – indeed it employs the fourth generation of the PC engine that was used to create BF2, Battlefield 2142 and Battlefield Heroes.
Unlike the cartooney Battlefield Heroes, released last year, Play4Free is a gritty military FPS. It's created by the team behind Heroes at EA's free-to-play division at DICE, Easy Studios.
There's vehicular warfare, sandbox gameplay and 32-player battles. It combines popular maps from Battlefield 2 with familiar classes and weapons from Battlefield: Bad Company 2. It's got 16 vehicles, including the F-35 jet fighter and the Russian T-90 tank.
It also simulates the career progression of a professional soldier. Players can learn skills, buy new equipment and weapons to craft a unique soldier.
Visually, weapon models from Bad Company 2 are used. Post-processing effects like film grain, colour grading and depth of field are also included.
With Play4Free, Easy's aimed to create a fast-paced modern shooter for fans of the likes of Bad Company 2, Medal of Honor and Call of Duty.
"We're filling those other moments in the day," Easy boss Ben Cousins told Eurogamer.
"Maybe you want to play a single-player game on console. Maybe it's you and four buddies playing in a squad on console. This is more about you jumping in with 32 players, maybe playing against strangers, a bit more of an RPG experience, more of an MMO way of approaching things.
"On the surface, it looks like, why would I ever play a console title again? But there are differences and different moments there, I think."
Like Heroes, however, Play4Free will employ a micro-transaction-based business model.
"Five per cent of the audience buy stuff. 95 per cent of people never spend any money at all," Cousins explained.
"Five per cent want to customise their character, they want to look cool, they want a slightly cooler weapon, they feel they can get advantage over other players by buying stuff. Those guys fund the experience for everyone else. It's a classic free-to-play business model, which we're really comfortable with and we've got really good at now."
There will be links between Heroes, Play4Free and Battlefield 3 in the future, "to reward you for keeping in the ecosystem and jumping from game to game."
If you hit level 15 in Heroes, for example, you could unlock an exclusive item in Play4Free. If you hit a certain level in Play4Free, you could get access to special content in BF3.
Closed beta sign-ups start today, with the closed beta opening on 30th November. The game goes live into open beta early next year.
Not really liking the "Play4Free" part of the title, it sounds silly Anyways, sounds pretty sweet, much more interesting than their other f2p fps, bf:heroes

Admin could fix it up if needed.
Why would you take it out? That's what they named the game.

Yes, but it sounds better without the game name in the title imo. But heck with it.
it's free to play if you don't mind getting utterly stomped by people who bought all the upgrades. if the things are unlockable, it will be unachievable shit. you will be forced to buy shit to compete
hell, this is at least preferable to their nhl scheme of paying $60 for a game and then realizing you need to clunk down an additional $15 to be even competitive in HUT or EASHL.

have to say it looks pretty sweet, and i have an enormous confidence in dice games.. but EA gives me as much a cringe as activision when it comes to their publishing methods.
the only thing which came to my mind was just...WHY?
- if you wanna play a battlefield for free you'll play bf:heroes - if you want a cheap battlefield with a pretty big community even now you'll just play bf2...just about 15$ with all (3 i guess) expansions and the latest patch... - if you wan't none of it and just the latest battlefield with all the classes which are in bfp4f and destructible worlds and you'll play bfbc2 (which is not expensive now either)...
i really don't get why they don't just focus on their already released titles and maintain them?! instead they go for another battlefield title which is neither unique nor new (or relevant), since there are so many (free) shooters in the bfp4f style out there...
I concur. EA seems confident trying to be successful in making a F2P then maybe charge microtransactions. Luckily PC users didnt have to pay $15 for those ridiculous map packs for BC2, it was just the same maps just unlocked for different game types.

And if you want a GOOD Battlefield, you'll play Battlefield 1942

sure...1942, vietnam, bfbc, 2142...whatever you want as i said...i just don't get why another bf title which is in no way new but just mashing up stuff from other titles (and not even all the good stuff) - and all titles so far had something new in a particular way, didn't they? i just thought i mention the latest titles of the bf series

I was talking about the title of the game itself, not the title of the thread
I think this is kinda cool. Even if it is just a mash up of other games, it is free. I have lots of friends who have to pay for school, pay for their place, food, you know, that kind of stuff, who can't afford games right now. But, they still want to play. So it'll be kinda cool.
Anyway, the more like BF2 it is, the better. BFBC wasn't as good, but BF2.. ♥♥♥

sure it's good that it's free...but there are already sooo many games in the style of bfp4f which are also free...and there's also already bf heroes... i just don't think it was a smart choice...that's all i wanna say
and about bf2...sure it's a great game!!! i totally agree. but comparing bfbc2 to bf2 is like comparing cs and hl2dm, you know...
Interview about the game and how the match-making system works etc. You won't get people with high skill or "toys" against you if you aren't high enough etc.
What a huge disappointment, but I can't say I'm surprised. I doubt us BF fans will ever see a true BF3. By that I mean PC focused BF game with 64 players, jets, mod support, ect ect.
Things have just gotten worse over the years, and BFBC2 was no exception. Awful balance, lack of patches, lack of maps, and no mods.
I still think that Vietnam was the greatest disappointment in the franchise as a whole. That had the potential to be the coolest, but it was glitched to everloving shit.
Things are slightly less glitchy on consoles though... 2142 was another bad glitchy one, just everything so choppy
Might be good, at least the music was good in the trailer. Hope it will get a proper server listing, when I played heroes it was quite hard to join on a friend, but that was in late beta.
