Bumping it from C to U is a bit meh but if 90% of EMA has cards of this level or better, I won't be complaining.

All cards in Eternal Masters are already legal in Legacy and Vintage. They will not become legal in Modern or Standard.

Ughhhhhh can't decide wat do
To draft EMA or not?

I wouldn't be doing so in the hopes that I open foil mana crypt or anything, it just looks super fun to try, but $50 is a lot for what may be essentially no return.

Maybe I just want to cause I haven't drafted SOI in a while (which isn't even true since I've done it online but that's less fun than in person)

I think im an addict halp

It's the novelty. I'd love to draft it too but I'll stick to xmage once I'm on my holidays after next week.

The loot problem is a mtg classic and with the years I've learned that it's always loot, even if sometimes it's painful :D

Even if you already have the best card in hand for a given situation, looting isn't all that terrible either, because milling for one random card doesn't matter... Unless the opponent can get value from cards in your graveyard or unless decking yourself is a real option. Both should be unlikely. When you discard the card you draw, you still get value in the form of information.

There's also the possibility of drawing into a better option than what you have in hand, of course.

So yeah, always loot eot.

I'd argue that in a vacuum if your hand is truly the best it can be you shouldn't loot, but yeah if you have the slightest chance of improving your hand with no downsides (and having to discard the third best card in your deck isn't a downside since that third best card could be anywhere in the deck) you should obviously take it.

It is essentially impossible for looting to be wrong since at worse you simply discard the card you drew.

If this were rummaging then I can see that there can be an argument. But, for the most part, milling the top card of your deck in the slight chance you improve your hand (or even make it so the opponent is uncertain what you have by drawing a card, shuffling your hand, re-asses the board state, then discard a card from your hand)

I wouldn't consider that true in general. Like if you need multiple cards to win and you can't risk discarding one of them. Or if your hand is better than the entire rest of your library and as such looting is always equivalent to milling 1. In the outlined example I would have looted, but Brian Braun-Duin did post an argument for not looting (http://www.channelfireball.com/articles/dont-loot/) which while I don't completely accept in that specific case does present a reason for not looting under some circumstances.

I did a couple practice drafts on xmage already but the problem is drafting on xmage is of suspect quality (as I've explained to you before). It helps me learn the format but as far as quality practice goes I doubt it'll help that much. I expect the super tryhard drafters to show up to EMA drafts so I can probably expect to 0-3 in person (the main reason I tend not to flashback draft on mtgo---the majority of drafters on mtgo are higher in skill than in person, not to mention are already probably familiar with the formats so any hope of getting value or continuing to draft with minimal money spent is not great. At least with EMA it's anew format for everyone even if other people are more familiar with the specific cards than I am)

EMA is super fun.
Didn't open anything good at all but between random uncommons/foils and splitting 3/4 I may actually be able to afford to draft it again tomorrow.

Was it worth the $50+ that you paid? I am still not too sure about drafting it. it's almost the cost of 2 pre-releases...

UR deck confirmed for awesome. Just won a draft with it.
Format seems medium speed. Depends on your deck really (GR and WR are pretty fast for example). It's definitely not a slow format though. No board stalling is even remotely possible most of the time.

I draft twice yesterday. The first one I ended up on blue/white flyers but scrubbed out losing to RWu tokens and RG aggro. The second one I didn't drop a single game. Here's the list, in rough order of which cards were drafted first, omitting all cards that didn't make the cut. I also picked up 11 nonbasics, but only 7 made the cut. I think I picked most of the nonbasics in packs 2 and 3.
Pack 1
[image loading]
Pack 2
[image loading]
Pack 3
[image loading]
Lands
4 Forest
3 Plains
1 Swamp
1 Mountain

This deck had some insane synergy and ended up utterly dominating every opponent I had. One match went to time against UB reanimate / value / chain gravediggers but I ended up clutching it out at the last second. A couple things to note:
Goblin Trenches overperformed. That card is just mean as fuck. Technically black has a counter in nausea but that card is sideboard most of the time and still can't beat it in the long run. I am so glad that I splashed red for it. Vindicate was also decent, I had enough nonbasics to justify it and never ran into mana problems.

Getting that third Squadron Hawk was also key. Those Hawks were integral to the deck's success. I don't think I'd have felt as good about playing Emperor Crocodile without them. Speaking of, he was my go-to target for Green Sun's Zenith, although I also got a Llanowar elf with it and the Sentinel Spider in one game that I already had the Crocodile.

Coalition Honor Guard said "No" to a Timberwatch Elf, and my opponent was not happy about it.

As far as the enchantress subtheme goes, I was a little disappointed that I couldn't get more enchantments. I sort of went all in with the pack 1 pick 1 Argothian Enchantress. The late Elephant Guide in pack 1 made me hopeful that it was open. I ended up with 7 enchantments, and I got about 8 total triggers from the enchantresses over the whole draft, so I think it was worth it.

This deck was a lot of fun though. Drawing all those extra cards with the Enchantresses, the Harmonize, and the Squadron Hawks made it feel almost like a blue deck with better creatures. 10/10 would draft it again.

Also, it was my buddy's birthday yesterday and he opened a foil Force of Will and a Jace the Mind Sculptor out of the same pack. Proof:

EMA was a fun draft format. I got a foil sinkhole and Mana Crypt which was nice. Came in 2nd (1st in my pod of 8, we mixed the pods for finals.. did 2 8 man pods.. weird format but w.e). Our decks that won our respective pods were pretty much the exact same. Black base with Innocent Blood, Eyeblight's ending, Phyrexian Rager, Prowling Pangolin (2x of each of those). Also had tragic slip, Nekrataal, Sengir Autocrat, Havoc demon as 1 of's. My secondary color was white, but more of a splash than anything and consisted of Pacifism, War priest of Thune, Second Thoughts, Glimmerpoint Stag (hilariously great in this format, so much enchantment 'removal'), and Faiths Fetters. The deck was super solid, unfortunately we played across pods for the last round and I lost to a sinkhole on turn 2 game 3 when he was on the play.. I just never caught up in time.

I drafted a deck like yours this past weekend at GP Columbus, more all in on the combo (more lootings/departures and 1 more burning vengeance). 3 creatures total. That deck is very resilient, beat a player with a relic of progenitus and also blew up one of my burning vengeance. Then I proceeded to 5 spell tempo him out of the match.

Beat all the aggro variants and the games weren't close. I don't think there's any incentive to play aggro in this format, none of the decks looked all the particularly impressive.

So I don't know if this an acceptable place to ask in general Magic the Gathering questions, so please let me know if this isn't the place for it!

Anyways, I'm pretty new to Magic and I'm having a hard time knowing when it's good to keep my starting hand or when to mulligan.

From my understanding you want around 3-4 lands and you really don't want to go down to fewer than 6 cards in your starting hand. I also realize it might depend on what deck you play. So for reference, I like to play Red decks with a lower mana curve and a Green/White Enchantment deck with an average(?) mana curve.

Feedback/advice would be awesome.

Thanks!

It really depends on a lot of situations, with the main one being your deck.

The rule of thumb I generally stick to is whether or not I can play the cards in my hand in the first three turns or so. If there's a dead card or two it might be ok, but if half the hand is unplayable, then I want that gone.

So a red aggro deck might be able to get by with 1 - 2 lands if you have a bunch of cheap creatures, but the green/white one might not be able to.
