if you're a fan of red decks, i was a guest in a small podcast Red Deck Winning. I come in at minute 30 & talk briefly about becoming a Silver Pro, then talk a lot about the Red Cards in SoI.

So how did everyone pre release go?

I was playing R/U beatdown/couter with Jace. Went 3-1. Lost badly to R/G werewolves when I cant stablise in time in both games. Besides Jace, got nothing of note. I wished I had my BFZ luck for my pack prizes

Overall, sealed seems much much better than the Zendikars ones. I may be interested in playing more for SOI if I have the time unlike BFZ/OGW

I'm going to a sealed in a few hours... reading through the cards now. Delirium is a weird mechanic, but it seems like there are enough ways in the set to take advantage of it.

The issue with delerium is the instant/sorcery ratios in your deck + having an outlet to get lands in the yard.

Its easy to get creature + instant/sorcery in the yard, its the land + other thing that's harder.

Don't worry about delirium. It is very very easy to get it. Most of the time, turn 5 delirium will trigger. No one had problems achieving it at the pod I was in. 80% of my pod went red + something. Tri colour is rather hard to pull off. MVP card is magnifying glass for me somehow with the uncommons punching above their weight.

Good luck with your pod!

Suppose I attack my opponent with a creature, my opponent blocks with a bear (just to pick a creature), but before combat damage I am forced to discard a card. I discard Malevolent Whispers and pay its madness cost. I then choose to take control of the bear. What happens with regards to combat damage? The bear comes over to my side of the battlefield and simply takes no damage, and my original creature deals no damage unless it had trample?

A creature that changes controller leaves combat so your creature is still blocked (and cant dmg the opponent without trample) and the bear is unharmed.
It ignores such insignificant forces as time, entropy, and death

I did a sealed last night, and had almost no way to discard cards so I couldn't capitalize on delirium in most games. Similarly, I had difficulty activating madness (I did it once or twice). My pool of cards just didn't have much discard. I got more utility out of quilled wolf than anything else. Other cards I used with the potential to be scary without delirium were Tireless Tracker, Uncaged Fury, and Avacyn's Judgment (my promo). I did get to transform Westvale Abbey one time which made the night worth it . I had no other nonbasic lands, no usable artifacts, and no fixing. WUB all seemed unusable to me. I went:

1-2
2-0
1-2
2-0
1-2

which is the best you can possibly do without winning any prize above the participation pack everyone gets. It's actually better than I expected to do after deckbuilding.

My prerelease pack was insane, I ended up getting 2 on color mythics with a free sigarda splash for a mid range RB deck with the low removal to boot. Ended up splitting in top 4.
Get it by your hands...

I had a fucking pile in my sealed pool, haha. I had literally two removal spells in the entire pool, and only one was any good (lightning axe). Went RW aggro with a few W fliers to get in that last damage, since I had literally no bombs, either. The best rare I opened was the Hanweir militia captain. I did open From Under the Floorboards, but I didn't think I could make black work, it didn't seem aggressive enough (only had one flier, and it was a 2/1). All I could do was piece together an aggressive deck with the fastest common/uncommon creatures I could, and those were in white and red.

MVP was actually magmatic insight, pretty much no-one sees that coming. When I stall out and they stabilize at like 5 life on turn 5 or 6, you just grow your board for a few turns and blam, big damage.

Ended up going 2-1-1, got 2 packs. Didn't feel too bad since it honestly felt like the worst sealed pool I ever opened at an event, ever.

The deck I lost to was ridiculous, though; dude had a sick pool. He had a U/W fliers deck, and he opened an odric (so everything had flying all the time), a westvale abby, a forgotten creation, and an Avacyn.

Pretty happy about the new Modern banlist!
I'm really tempted to play BUG Control / Midrange, wonder if AV makes it good enough.
Will probably go back to Jund / Temur delver for some time though, those AV are a bit too expensive for now...

At least wait until EMA comes out, I think there's not a bad chance it sees a reprint there. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a cascade theme in the set for limited, seems reasonable for the set.

Thanks for the advice, I'll wait a bit
I also realized I need Jace, Vryn Prodigy, so not like there's any chance I'm trying the deck soon
Good thing Jund is always a decent deck to play no matter what the Modern meta looks like.

I'm trying to improve my deck building and I'm building a deck out of 6 boosters I opened. I've done one sealed event and one draft since SoI was released, and I'm starting to feel like this set is powerful. I put together what I think is a really strong deck and it fares ok but is competing with everyone else's really strong deck...

This pool in particular I feel is really strong but I can't for the life of me decide what deck to build. Take a look:

I'm kind of struggling with what to do, both from a perspective of general sealed deck building strategy and specifically how to deck build in SOI. I think I can eliminate blue because, besides being weak on good creatures, the only bomb is Engulf the Shore, which is going to be weak if I'm in multiple colors (and I can't go heavy blue obviously).

By eliminating blue, I make Spectral Shepherd less abusable, although as a 2/2 flyer for 3 mana it could be worth using in conjunction with Odric. Topplegeist is good if I can put enough ways into the deck to trigger Delirium. There are a few other playable white creatures.

In black, Pale Rider of Trostad is very playable although I have almost no way to trigger madness so the forced discard isn't as appealing (although it still helps for Delirium). Rancid rats I could see putting one in, and it might have good synergy with one or two other noncreature spells. Olivia Bloodsworn could be useful if I go WBR and Odric gives my sick creatures haste each turn for one red mana. Heir of Falkenrath is a generally strong card. A couple of other creatures are playable.

The only red creature that stands out to me is Village Messenger which again, could be useful in conjunction with Odric for giving all creatures Menace, but only if a turn goes by without spells being cast. I guess Pyre hound is a bit unremarkable given the creature-heavy card list, but giving trample to all my creatures via Odric would be very useful. Ember-Eye Wolf could give Haste. Without Odric the red creatures are somewhat weak.

Pretty much all of the green creatures are playable (especially with delirium), although a few stand out: Lambhold Pacifist can be very efficient, Hermit of Natterknolls makes things difficult for many opponents, and Obsessive Skinner is a good threat once Delirium is active.

As for instants, Eerie Interlude is a cool card but probably not useful in this deck. Silverstrike is very playable, as is Puncturing Light. I like Survive the Night, but I suspect it's not as playable as I want it to be.

Skipping over blue, Throttle is expensive but at least can deal with invincibility. In red, Geitblast won't be useful without running blue, Fiery Temper is just about the only card with madness I would seriously consider, and Uncaged Fury can win games. In green, Might Beyond Reason would be worthwhile if I was confident I could get Delirium going every game. Anguished Unmaking goes into the deck if I'm running white and black (which is likely). I don't really care for losing three life though.

Angelic Purge seems good in this set given all the clues just ripe for sacrifice. Vessel of Ephemera works will with Odric and helps me get Delirium, but I'm not sure I would use both of them. Nahiri's Machinations becomes very good if I run red as well. Gryff's Boon also works well with Odric and is a good way to capitalize off of when I'm forced to discard (assuming I don't need the enchantment to remain in the graveyard). Bound my moonsilver seems like a fairly versatile card in this set. Vessel of Malignity is a good way to punish your opponent before he can forcefully discard his madness cards or activate delirium. Triskaidekaphobia is fun, but I'm a bit worried it could backfire on me if I use it. I might be better off just leaving it in the sidebar. I think dead weight would be worth running.

I don't see much benefit to running Vessel of Volatility. Skin invasion is good and would be fun to put on to my Rancid Rats. Crawling Sensation might be a good way to get to Delirium, creates little dudes for blocking or sacrificing, and works well in conjunction with stoic builder. Ulvenwald Mysteries is useful too. Vessel of Nascency is also a good way to trigger delirium as well as grab a land I need. Cryptolith Rite might be necessary if I run a lot of colors. The artifacts are both good for getting to Delirium.

After all of that, I'm really stuck on how to get down to say, three colors. At first glance I wanted to just go WBR using the things I described above in those colors, but there's some solid green as well. The two things I'm asking are, where are the misconceptions in the logic above (I'm sure there are at least a few), and what direction should I be going in with this card pool, and why.

I think your main deck-building issue is that you're not prioritizing colour depth and your mana curve high enough. You've analyzed each colour quite well, but you're tending towards black and red too much even though you've identified only a few creatures for each that are usable. Sometimes it helps to just pile up the cards you're considering into one area, and it helps to identify what your deck is going to lack.

Green and White seem to have the most depth in that pool, in terms of creature quantity/quality, mana curve, utility and basically, well, everything. You get some spot removal with white, some acceleration, card filtering and Delirium enablers with Green, and creatures that can be threatening if the game goes late and stalls a little.

And, if absolutely necessary, between Foul Orchard and Cryptolith Rite, you can easily splash in Throttle and Anguished Unmaking if you need ways to kill problem cards.
Average means I'm better than half of you.

Hard for me to build based on the list because I recognize cards based on cmc and art, but I think this is a pretty clear cut GW deck splashing black for Triskaidekaphobia, Anguished Unmaking, and Throttle. Your white is way too good with Odric, 4 removal spells (two being premium removal), Gryff's Boon, and two Vessels...except it doesn't have good creatures, but all of your green creatures are great and you have Ulvenwald Mysteries which is amazing.

Have you laid out builds of each of the color combinations and compared them? To me, any deck that is black or red will have trouble finding playables. For example, Fiery Temper and maybe Pyre Hound are the only red cards in this pool that would pull me towards red. The other creatures are great draft cards, but hyper aggressive cards like Village Messenger and these other red creatures get way worse in sealed when you can't draft a curve to abuse them.

Black is a little more deep, but looking at a BW deck in this pool, I have a hard time seeing how it can win because the biggest creature between the two colors is like a 3/3. You can splash all the great black cards with Foul Orchad anyway. Also I wouldn't recommend going three colors (you said BRW) without fixing. Green gives you a dual land, Vessel (soft fixing), and Cryptolith Rite.

You know it's funny, we actually have done a whole bunch of sealed practice building within the last couple months over in the Lounge. I'll give this a look over tomorrow because I love doing this sort of thing. :D

Edit: I took a quick glance and while GW seems like the 'easy' build, I'd say there's something to BR madness as well. Heir of Falkenrath is a 'mythic' uncommon and you have Fiery Temper and some decent aggro in Olivia's Bloodsworn and Voldaren Duelists to push damage through. Having constantly built decks with G and W in them I'd personally attempt BR just for the hell of it if I had pulled that pool.
Edit x2: And double uncaged fury/surge? Skin Invasion? BR aggro TOTALLY doable here. K gotta go to bed
Edit x3: WAIT LOL you should also run Triskaidekaphobia too since you're more likely to knock them down to 13 before they do it to you. Play it on your end step T4, win T5 because they probably won't be able to gain/lost life in any way. I really wish I could play this deck
Edit x4: Hmm on second thought this IS sealed and not draft---you may not get as far. I'd try it anyway though because it's more fun.

My issue with BR aggro is that you only have two madness cards and you're playing a few stinkers. It's a deck, but no way can it be better than white.

I recommend listening to the whole LR Cast Episode 310 and there is one part (idk the time though) in LR Cast Episode 311 relevant to sealed. I really forgot when it was in Episode 311, but Owen said something along the lines of "you need to play your rares." It sounds silly, but it's true. In sealed, you really need to make an effort to hone into your bomb rares and try to play them even if your deck isn't as synergistic or anything.
