On my wvw server we are fighting players from teams like SK gaming, LLL, ToT and many more, and they seem pretty well organized. Actually, more like HARDCORE organized, and u actually need some strategy to beat these ppl.
There is also a server ranking which is published on the gw2 page.
Now i really wouldn't argue with u ppl because everyone has their own opinion and tastes and I can understand if someone doesn't like the game. But the problem is, some potential new player will come here and read all these whines from ppl who are either biased in their opinion or hardly played the game to it's full extent, and they will maybe give up on buying a game which is actually fun, cheap, and offers some new concepts in the MMO genre, nothing revolutionary but nice at the same time.
So please, stop bashing the game with biased arguments. Sure the game still lacks some major parts as some of you pointed out here, but I'm pretty sure with time it will change. I mean ffs, we waited 2 years for CLAN SUPPORT AND UNRANKED MM in sc2.
I would have appreciated a thread like this a lot back when I was a potential new player. It would have saved me a lot of frustration and enough money to buy several games I'd actually enjoy.

So basically is what you are saying, stop voicing our opinions because they differ to yours? lol.
You are right though, all opinions are biased, yours included. Please refrain from saying anybody who has a differing opinion to yours hasn't "played the game to the fullest extent" or whatever.
The only thing you praised in this game was WvW, which I agree 100% is the most fun part of the game, but it could have been so much better. There is a reason all of SK gaming or w/e are doing that instead of SPvP. If you look at the game they tried to mimic with WvW, the only thing they improved on was accessibility at the cost of removing all depth and fighting outside of zergs and doors.
I agree it was fun for awhile, and yes it is a cheap game, these are great points to new buyers. What new concepts does it offer and where did you read 500k concurrent players?
edit: It's no secret that Bnet 2.0 is a steaming pile, if anything it should be a lesson to other developers on what not to do so that's no excuse.

I think the main problem with all the whiners here is that they wanted another grindfest MMO like WoW, while this infact is a social, teamwork, pvp focused game. If you're a 12 yr old kid who likes to show off his new gear and own undergeared ppl then you are in the wrong game (xcept maybe in WvW, but even there u can do shit on your own).
U whiners didn't mention the awesome moments when you are with a big group of people, all working for the same cause, making up tactics, fighting other ppl who are working against you, setting up ambushes, controlling key points, and most importantly, SOCIALIZING.
I can tell u that gw2 is a great game which offers some unique elements and epic moments if you get into it, and if you like what I just wrote you won't regret a fucking cent of the game's price.
Peace You actually think this is a teamwork and PvP focused game? Oh god the stupid is killing me. The PvP in this game is half-assed at best and abysmal at worst, WoW has better PvP content than this game and that is not a good thing. Teamwork? Please, teamwork in this game is borderline non-existent outside of zerging from door to door in WvW, there is a reason the competitive scene was dead within 2 weeks.
Socializing and fighting against other people who socialise, this has been a staple of MMO's since their inception, and this game doesn't even do a very good job of it. You are better off playing sandbox MMO's if you want a social game. This game is worth the initial price but literally the only thing this game does better than other MMO's on the market is not having a monthly fee. Its basically WoW for people on a budget. I don't understand why you would hate on WoW then defend this game, they are marketed towards the same people. Reason wasn't lack of teamwork though, reason was complete and utter lack of support structure within the game to sustain a competetive pvp audience. I mean, you can't even make custom games... no ladder no custom games no matchmaking only one game mode one a few samey maps tons of bugs in traits/items Oh yeah, there are a ton of reasons this game flopped as a competitive PvP title. But even if all of those things were implemented, do you think things would drastically change? From what I saw, the majority of players tried SPvP and then dropped it pretty quickly after because they weren't having fun. If they were having fun there would be outcry for basic competitive features as you listed, but it just went silent a few weeks in. It would take some serious changes for there to be any sizable PvP community playing this game, its so far away from being an esport as they marketed its hilarious they even tried.
I'm still having a ton of fun in sPvP. IMO there is enough depth at higher levels of play for it to be a competitive PvP title and the combat system is good. There is a sizable niche of active hardcore sPvP'ers in the game even with the lack of features named above.
I think it's in the casual playerbase where the game suffers. The vast majority of the complaints seem to be no tie to the PvE aspect of the game (they go WvW instead), lack of diversity in builds (bugged/UP traits), and the learning curve can be rough when dealing with some of the burst damage in the game.
They've said they plan to add some more uses for glory (points earned in sPvP) that might tie to the PvE world, and if they fix the traits to add more build diversity, ladder so players don't get pub stomped, spectator modes to learn how to counter certain builds, more maps, more game modes, custom servers, etc. (all things they already stated they plan to add), I think the game can come alive because I think the core combat system is very fun and fast-paced. I say to the people who gave up on sPvP to give it 6-12 more months and come back and check it out.

Yeah, basically this. I'm a PvP player myself and I basically only play games for PvP (at least MP ones obviously). Even in WoW I pretty much only PvP'd for 4-5 years straight. I tried about 5-6 matches of SPVP after beta (since I did a lot during beta and was skeptical) and it's just not fun. It lacks oomph. I feel like I don't control my character as well as I do in a game like WoW and the ability set seems really limited because the only things you can really customize are some utility spells which usually aren't very exciting. Traits aren't exciting either because they're usually flat % damage/hp/armor increases with some random gimmicks instead of learning new spells or something.

I know I had tons of fun with it. Finally a pvp where gear doesn't matter, because everyone has it same. But playing free tourneys and the occasional paid for...??? I don't know what for, isn't sustainable. For a game that marketed itself esporty and pvp, I was amazed to see things like custom lobbies missing, like what the fuck? Are we back to the 90s here? They simply rushed it out, then been jerking for the pve while pvp was totally ignored.

Hmm so played a bit so far, am lvl 8, just from doing the heart quests, and story quest till you need to kill a thief boss of sorts (am being human thief who starts as a street rat, or whatever).
The thing is, I still feel like I have zero clue as to what to do. My gear is awful, I think, things take ages to kill, and I die almost instantly to most enemies that I try to engage. Also, whilst gaining levels nets bonus stats (presumably without me needing to choose anything anywhere), do all skills just come from using weapons? I have not done anything with skills, I did do some of those skill point challenges and got a number of them, but have not used them at all, for fear of messing something up.
So if somebody wanted to help me ingame sometime, I would be all for it. The account I am using is in fort aspenwood or something, not sure how worlds and servers etc work in gw2, so could use info on that as well. Thanks in advance!

I'm not on fort aspenwood but here are some basics
1. Skill slots 1-5 are tied to the type of weapon you have
2. Skill slot 6 is heal, 7-9 are utility and 0 is your elite
3. Skill points are used on utility/elite skills. Use them on stuff you think looks cool, it's impossible to mess up as you'll have all skills unlocked eventually
4. If you're feeling lost, just do your personal story. It will lead you to higher level areas.
5. You can pick up crafting professions at any time, go for it.
6. Gear isn't super important, just try to keep weapons/armor close to your level. A level 10 blue is stronger than a level 10 white, but weaker than a level 10 green.
7. At level 11 you start getting trait points which open up more options for making your dude stronger. Make sure to spend them as you go, you can't really mess these up either... it's easy to respec

Mm so I should just mess around a bit? If I can respec stuff anyway? And in terms of combat, as thief, should I just get used to moving around a lot more? And currently am using two terrible daggers, should I also mess around with different weapons? Though I'd have to go buy them, of course. Thanks for the above info, though. In terms of crafting, are you restricted in any way, or can you max all crafts? The closest thing to crafting I have done is actually mining, and was told by some guy to salvage pretty much everything I can, as the mats would be useful later.

You can only have 2 craft at the same time, but when you up one and abandon it, if you come back to it you will have the same level in it.

Honestly, this thread has NEVER been majority positive about the game, even during the hype period. The GW2 Reddit is a far better resource for newer players who want to hear about the game from its actual community. For some reason, except early on after release, a true community never formed in this thread, so there's no much to be gleaned from the conversations here for a new player.

Thats my problem with the game as well, the customization in terms of character abilities just lacks depth/ progression. The traits just arent very interesting, and neither are most of the utility spells. I find this is just as much a problem for PVE, you have nothing to look forward to while leveling, after you choose out a few utility spells you want and unlock all your slots around level 30, it feels like your character isn't going to be able to do anything new for the next 50 levels (which is pretty much true).
I don't know how this game is still getting so much praise for goty awards and such. I have a feeling the people who put them there probably aren't even playing the game still, and are just basing it off of their experience 2-3 weeks after launch.
It just feels like arena net doesn't even know themselves which direction they want to take them game in, At first there was basically no end game character progression,(which i thought was a terrible idea) now they have added some in, but since they didnt build the end game from the ground up to support it it just feels like it was something that was tacked on quickly (which it was).
PVP is the same, I understand in some ways why people want to have a everyone be equal every time, but without some sort of progression , without people having something to work towards, there is only so many times they can do the same thing over and over again.
Progressing a character in an mmo is what makes repeating content again and again fun in my opinion. There is a reason why wow is so popular, and honestly i think one of the reasons its less popular now (specifically in the west) is because they took alot of steps to dumb down character progression after WOTLK and obviously because its getting older. Even with it being dumbed down it still has some of the best character progression in any mmo today.
|
I agree with most of these complaints, but I have to point something out. For pvp, having no progression in terms of ladders and tournaments is blatantly terrible. But that's also all you need in terms of progression in that department. Any sort of improvement in stats just retarded on principle.
Guild Wars 1 was still amazingly fun and competitive some aspects when entering the 5000th+ GvG match.

so, having played a fair bit over the last 5 days, am now lvl 37, have "discovered" the entirerty of 8 maps or so (though like 3 are starting areas), and have started leatherworking. As I level it, I recognize the value of keeping all those mats over the course of the game...so expensive otherwise! So a couple of quick questions.....
1. best way to make money using trading post? I want to continue lvling my leatherworking, but I also want to be able to make money at the same time to sustain the lvling of leatherworking.
2. As a thief, and a character in general, are there are any milestones I should be looking out for re: access to maps, or lvl specific skills, or stuff like that? Been using shortbow, and putting all my trait skills into power and precision (10 in each, haven't used 7 yet, I think the manual for letting me go beyond that I can buy at lvl 40? And then I plan on going all precision, is that wrong?)
3. Just general question re: karma, seeing as I have a couple of unused karma potions, do I wait till some event a la double karma or something before I drink them? What is the use of it? Also, is running around maps, clearing them completely and the like, a genuine method of progression? Seems to have been going fine, though I have played a lot. Have not touched the story quest in a while but will pick it up again at some stage.
|
1. Buy low sell high...no really, that's like every auction house in every online game. Can't give specific items or such, because it changes all the time. I assume you're in for a short term quick profit, so only way is to start tracking items yourself and buy low, sell high. Long term profit is oft gained from storing seasonal items for selling months after the seasonal event has passed.
2. No real right and wrong, especially against the pve leveling content. Try things out to see what fits you. For many, the backstabby style is probably what they'd go for when playing a thief, I fell in love with a condition based shortbow build (cluster bomb + caltrops ftw).
3. No idea about the potions, they were put in game after I already moved fully to pvp content. It's perfectly fine to go for a 100% clearing before you move on, best thing about the game is that even low level content still gives xp, since you get down leveled in areas where you are much higher level than the area. Just explore, I had fun until about 70% map completion and by then I was 80 and already moving on to pvp. You can do the story as you level, or level first, then do the story so it keeps more together. Just don't expect too much about the story. Sadly, it was one of those where the devs did a fine job in the start and mid, then rushed the end. This particular case they doomed us all with Traherne.

just getting back in the game after a few months of not playing and was happy to find my ~15 000 mystic coins are worth quite a bit more than the original 150-200g i put into them. shoulda bought 50k or 100k coins instead, my other long term investments are around 60-70% profit only, which isn't even up to speed with what gold->gem conversion did (eg. kept up with the inflation, 200% or so since i was active)
oh well, sitting on a bank of 600 gold. still probably going to sit on the coins unless i want to buy a ready-made legendary or something stupid!
e: for some actual content in addition to feelgood bragging re: trading post money making, i just autopiloted my way to buying and reselling rare low/mid level weapons and armor by the thousands to make my original few hundred gold. still looks pretty profitable at a glance and it at least used to be the best way to get a reasonably high ROI on a low bankroll, the best part being the high turnover rate of the hustle.

hmm thanks for feedback. I remember making money like that in other mmos (read: RO), but they also had bots polluting the servers I played, meaning buy low sell high took a bit more effort, but was also more fun and exciting (there were multiple sites tracking prices across different areas at different speeds, exciting stuff, really fun, just searching for bargains etc). Is there any similar thing to that for GW2? Or do I just get a feel for prices of whatever mats, and buy tons when cheap, and resell later?
