On a side now, I wish a new MMO would come out with a style for suited to Ultima Online's PK system from Age of Shadows. Although the earlier verisons were a lot more exciting due to the fact everything was lootable, Age of Shadows used a formula that allowed people to PvP with nice gear on and not worry about losing it.

For those who never played UO. The system was: There were four types of people, Blue, Grey, Red, and Orange. Blue ment you were just a good normal citizen who could not be attacked in cities and guard protected areas because you had not commited any crimes (Everyone starts out this way). Grey ment you commited a criminal act (stealing from someone's backpack, or attacked a blue outside guards zone). Red ment you had killed and ben reported by five blue characters, this ment "counts" were added to your character and it would take 40 in game hours to work off every count. After getting lower than 5 counts, you could be Blue again. Orange: This one is different because there were four factions in UO, you didn't have to joing them but if you did, you would be at war with the other three. Being Orange ment it didn't matter if you were in guards zone or anywhere, you could be attacked by other Orange players. (This is obiviously a very quick outline of it, I could go into further details if needed)

The looting system: Pre-AoS everything was lootable on a character except blessed items (Almost impossible to get, from what I remember). After AoS came out a new system came into place. Insureance was added to the game and you could insure the more expensive items in your inventory for a cost. Not everything was insurable, money, poitions, ingredints, stones, etc... Items like Armor, weapons, and clothes could be insured and if being killed and you had enough money in your bank, your items would be re-auotinsured. Of course if a person forgot to insure an item and that person died then of course it would be lootable. (This is where you would see nice players give back items and people who just wanna grief keep items). What made this system nice was the aspect of not being so fucking scared to walk out of guards or joning factions due to the fear of being "ganked" by a mob of 40 people and have your armor looted dry off you. What it ment was you had to be weary of what you brought along on each outing, did you want to be 100 poitions or just 30... etc. So while losing poitions and ingredints sucked, it wasn't the end of the world and they were easy to get back (make them or buy more) but it allowed for a simple and nice reward for killing the person. Also you would get a small piece of their insureance (so if the person had 15 insured items then you would claim 3000 gold off them, if they only had 5 insured items, then you would claim less). Of course I could go even further into items and insureance and everything but i'll keep it breif right now.

Lastly, the reason I felt this system was best was due to multiple reasons. Its ability to allow people to have a risk and reward system to PvPing. Making it not seem like a hell zone that would cause you to lose everything if you died. I am wanting a MMO to come out that allows one of the servers to have this setting just to see how it is accepted by the players.

It is 3am in the morning and I am dead fucking tired, any errors in my writing, I'm sorry but I think you guys will get the basic understanding of what I am trying to explain. I would glady talk further on the subject if anyone would like. PS. Please nobody use the arguement that I should just go to the Free UO servers, that is not something I am interested in.

As much as I want 3D UO I just don't think any of the mainstream MMO's will try it for a long time because they're just trying to grab the huge numbers.
Something like looting in PvP would just scare most people away (unfortunately).

They should just make specific servers for free for all PvP or something, they wouldn't have to change that much to make PvP flags on all the time outside of cities and that way they'd cater to everyone.

But lets not complain too much before we actually know how it does work in US/EU, maybe they've already changed it.

You guys are talking about EVE Online, but it's a space game...

no

Mainstream MMO in 3D with a similar harsh world like Ultima Online? EVE Online.

True, I do agree EVE would be the mainstream UO but... is it alright to say EVE is a different experience than other MMO's? I'm not into that whole spaceship, flying around with all those tabs up on your screen. Am I being to picky?

Also, I think say EVE is more of a Pre-AoS UO game because if your ship is destroyed, you can't get it back right?

Right, but at least you can insure your ships and get some money back to buy another ship. You can't insure items though...

Played in the EU sneak peek. Only lasted 2 hours. Made me feel like the only time i'm going to ever stop playing is when they shut the servers down.

Hi everyone, I'm going to be playing the North American closed beta (pre-ordered) on East server, feel free to PM me for party/instances! I've played the Korean full retail version last year for about 3 months. I quit after the Dark Awakening patch came out but I managed to hit maximum level (58).
Here's my quick impression of the game:

It’s simply a fantastic game. However, it is not flawless as it contains notable problems and flaws and there are rooms for improvement. But all in all, imo it is the best MMO that I’ve ever played..

Feel free to ask me about the game, class, race etc and I will try to answer to best of my knowledge!

a good PK system is

a) corpse looting
b) characters are skill-based rather than gear-based. meaning you advance your skills (say your fireball or dagger attack) with diminishing returns.

this means you can
a) numberchase like a maniac still
b) distribute XP into skills however you want
c) advance endlessly, with a diminishing returns modifier to keep players in check/balance
d) gear is not insanely valuable, but can still be decently valuable (cost a fair bit of money), or have sentimental value, or time value. the crutch of a character is always its skill levels/bonuses rather than its gear, ie a character with high levels in sword will be almost equally scarey with a $5 sword or a $500 sword.
e) inventory/storage size is realistically limited, meaning you can only store say 5 large swords in your vault, and will have to travel a long way to get to your other vault
f) decent degree of item customisation (tailor-made items, blue hilted sword etc), for sentimental value

example:
you have a 3 year old character with 500 skill bonus in stealing
VS
a 20 day old character with 200 bonus in perception (anti-theft) , who is carrying a sword that cost $100 to buy and another $100 dollars for a player to enchant it . it took only 1-2 hours for the character to farm that money (and he earnt xp at the same time), and another 30 minutes to get someone to come enchant the weapon for him. the item has some minor sentimental value, and the character has only 1 other similar weapon vaulted nearby. the value of the item to the thief is minor, but worth stealing if a) he has room in his inventory for it b) hes not busy doing something more interesting c) he can be bothered to go fence/sell it when he could make that much money killing stuff probably d) he wants to terrorise the newbie e) he dislikes the newbie for whatever reason (guild, group, wtvr) f) he is sure the item isnt enchanted or warded against theft which could be simply annoying g) he isnt scared of retaliation by other players who might be friends with our newbie such as thieves (who might sneak up on him and backstab him) or anyone else who might be in allegiance to our newbie , such as random vigilantes on a chat channel

basically, you limit the value of corpse looting/stealing whilst keeping it very entertaining and still valuable.
you put focus of the game into building the character skills with diminishing returns rather than "getting gear" .

anyway

you guys in Terra beta, did they censor the loli race after all?

Alright, I'm a bit confused.

The $5 for Beta access is ONLY for the European servers, correct? I was hoping to try it out for $5, don't really want to commit $50 for a game I may not enjoy...

That's how buying things usually works...

If you're not confident you'll like it, wait for more opinions after the beta/release.
