I guess I understand the desire to prevent d3 from becoming an e-sport.

I haven't been able to try the beta, so could anyone who played both maybe give a short comparison? I'm in the same spot although I played the beta. Barbarian : I never went below 80% HP or so in the beta, he was a real beast (and it was my first character). His skills, early on, were pretty basic "brawling" and overall from looking at skill spoiler videos I don't think that will change much. He's meant to be the dude that goes in and just unleashes while taking punishment. Monk : Out of all 5 characters, I only went below 50% HP once and that was with monk. Unlike the barbarian they feel the damage when they take it. Early on the skill selection was decent but pretty much just the basic attack stuff. Watching the skill spoilers, I see that the monk gets a lot of utility skills and skills that let you deal damage without putting yourself in the middle of it (seven sided strike, etc) and the mantras are useful. I think the monk skills are flashier and in the end the monk's DPS will probably be a bit superior to the barbarian. I think the barbarian is a better class just because he can still deal out tons of damage but he can also take it, but I like the playstyle of the monk a bit more I think. Assassin was by far my favorite class in Diablo 2 because you could just do so many different things and monk looks a bit more like that. While the barbarian is a really straight forward class, monk looks like it has more variety in how you can do things.

I haven't been able to try the beta, so could anyone who played both maybe give a short comparison? Barbarian is the better brute force character (obviously). With the right skills/passives/gear, you will be able to wade into groups of enemy mobs and dispatch them while not taking too much punishment. Lots of AoE, crowd control abilities like stuns, and great mobility with Leap allowing you to jump between levels instead of looking for stairs, etc. You have a lot of raw power and your "tankiness" so to speak will come from having a high armor value and high health pool, so you will see less damage spikes that often contribute so much to hardcore deaths. Monk is a better utility character. If you plan on playing in a group, Monks have plenty of buffs and group utility that will make them desirable in co-op situations. Most of their passives are defensive, revolving more around dodge and avoiding damage rather than overall taking less. This means you can get by with a smaller health pool, but that you are subject to sudden damage spikes. There are other defensive passives that can workaround this issue, like the one that revives you instantly if you die (every 90 seconds). IMO, and this is obviously conjecture, I think the Monk will be the class that will benefit the most from an appropriate skill/passive setup and when geared intelligently.

Good news is my Monday is super busy so I will only think about D3 999,999 times a second instead of 1,000,000 times a second. Not going to stay up and play at 3AM eastern, but I'm going to do an 8AM-8PM with minimal breaks for bathroom and food. I know that's not hardcore enough for most of you, but I'm 45 years old and need to have tiny breaks. This is my first Diablo game and I loved the stress test weekend so I'm playing this until I get to Inferno. I will grind some gear in Hell and give Inferno a go, but if I'm not making any progress in Inferno once I get there........back to LoL I go I guess.

I do think Normal will go pretty fast for me(2 days). Nightmare will probably take a week or so. Hell might take up to a month including grinding for gear. So that right there is close to 6 weeks. If after a couple of weeks I'm making zero progress in Inferno........ that would be 2 months of playing with no progress in the last 2 weeks....... Not too sure I want to keep banging my head against the wall. It is possible that I might give another class a go and see if that works better for me as I will be saving a set of gear at natural level breaks for the other classes. It is also possible that I might use the RMAH and be ok at making a bit of money and that will keep me playing/grinding. I just want to have it in my mind that if I'm not very good at the game, that I don't end up playing it just to keep playing it.

Yeah I think I will finish hell, give inferno a try on my first character then probably go back and make the other ones when I see I get owned. If I do well, I might just finish Inferno but doubt it.
