Like sometimes I would jump right into a group of enemies around a corner, or run away from a 1v2 just to go face first into another enemy =( could be a number of reasons ill just give general advice 1. find a meet up spot before the round starts..there's usually 2-3 for every map that someone calls out. just follow teammates if no one calls out anything 2. use headphones, especially when playing on a packed server 3. practice strafe jumping and strafe jumping into rocket jumps good rocket jumps will safe you an innumerable amount of times. practice whenever you can in game. 4. try to get the higher ground as much as possible, it makes it easier for aiming and for running away. i hope it helped

I honestly have no idea how he has such ridiculous aim with that thing, it's a fucking deathray. he went against guard head to head, guard was double stacked and I estimated strenx had about 250 and strenx straight up murdered him. Yeah, Strenx and Toxic's lgs are just on another level. I forget about it and then revisit the game to play and watch and still end up dumbfounded at their aim and consistency.

There's also a lot of little things that I feel like people don't mention to newbies. For one thing, running around strafe jumping every where only increases your chance of getting blasted. I had a lot more luck just snooping around and looking for some easy rails to stick in, or if I'm really lucky I can land a nice long LG on someone's back. Only when I see my teammates in trouble do I really kick up the pace and RJ around to them or to the enemy for a better position. I also learned that dodging any rocket that comes your way goes a loooong way to keeping you alive... I went from a long trip from T2 to T4. Sure tiers aren't the best measurement of skill, but overall at least until T4 it's a damn good estimation. After graduating T3 and entering T4 it was a real eye opener. You literally get shot by rails from all sorts of angles, and most of the time they will hit you whether you like it or not =_=... There's also the broad range of skill. You get guys like me who just made their initiation and can barely get by in regular games. Then sometimes I end up in a server stacked with vets and 1 or 2 star players, and just absolutely get demolished. There were several instances in my short time playing where I got really inspired to improve my game. I mentioned "star players" that I would randomly bump into once in a while, people who wreck servers that are already stacked with veteran quakers. But this ONE time I met one INSANELY good player. I'm pretty good at giving an honest judgement on the quality of players, and this one dude was above and beyond anything I had ever seen. I was really glad he was on our team too... I was struggling a lot vs the enemy team before he showed up, then when he did show up he would get into 1v3 situations and destroy them one after another. He would hit nearly every rocket spot on, knock people into the air, switch to rail and finish them off. The dude was reaaaal classy. Then there's the pros. The untouchables. I only have seen them on QLranks TV... Words can't really describe how much better they are than the rest of the Quake population. Players who have been playing for years and years still can't even come close. It's really amazing how high the skill ceiling this game has, it kind of reminds me of your typical shounen manga where you have the dirt poor run of the mill fighters to the top of the pyramid where some dude's power is exponentially way over 9000. And despite the few pro players in Quake I still feel like there's a lot of unknown players in the shadows who can still stand up to them in some terms of aim or strategy but just choose to live their lives instead of playing all the time- which adds even more interest into the game imo. Um so yeah, that's my one month impression of Quake Live from a fresh newbie to regular player POV hehe. Didn't expect to write so much lol.

Improvement in this game is logarithmic, you don't get incrementally better, you get STAGGERINGINGLY better and then it just keeps happening, but youre not actually good, there's just *that* much room to improve in. And it seems to be pretty much like that for the pros, to. The gap between the top few players and the ones below them and then the ones below them is vast. Imagine if every sc tournament had the same top four. Gotta agree here. I think too many people focus on aim when that's such a small part of it. The strategies, tactics, and geometries of the game are just too important to focus purely on aim. I think this game is closer to chess than broodwar ever could be because bw is so limited by its builds/units. Honestly, I just don't think an rts could ever be that complicated. If it was, it wouldn't be balanced. There's a purity involved in a game like Quakelive, and it's quite intriguing to highly competitive people that don't enjoy a high luck factor. edit: You mean exponential, right? :p

it's a pyramid for sure it takes about 4 years to get to the pro level(quake only, i'm not counting previous fps experience, which can help a lot) and about 5 to get to the top(only if you're talented and are taking the game very seriously) if someone can get there faster than 4 years, they are a real talent. i think av3k might have been the only one to do it, but that was in q4, which was a much smaller game than q3 or quakelive. some people will never get there no matter how much they play. hell, I know 17 year quake vets who never got close to the pro level, lol. enjoy the game(CA), but once you get to the top in CA, seriously think about switching to duel. it's an entirely different game and will work your mind in ways you've never imagined just curious, what part of the country do you play clan arena? here's rapha playing against a top 10 clan arena player(USA rank) in 2011

I usually play CA on the east coast servers on US, but every now and then I play on west coast or central if my friends are in there as well. For now I just want to work out all my fundamentals in CA before I move onto duel if I ever do. There's just so many things to learn and improve on. Like my aim is far far away from high level standards, and only now have I begun to understand the concept of moving around the map strategically rather than getting my ass blown up if I had just randomly run around the map. Then in duel you add in the element of items and timings, which allows you to set up tactics to score a frag around important items... I mean I played a handful of duels with my friends and all I could do was just run around the map in a circuit checking each item spawn haha. If I were lucky I would pick it up if not, I just keep on running... But I'm open to the idea of trying to play some more Duel despite the huge learning curve if it can help out my fundamentals so that I can do well in CA or TDM too, but duel seems like such a different ball game I just don't know enough to judge.

I never was very good at Quake because I was quite young, but once Unreal Tournament was released I got introduced to dueling right away. A lot of people didn't seem to like UT2k3 and UT2k4 very much but I loved them just as much if not more than the original UT. I haven't gotten into QuakeLive much even though my love for the genre is so strong. Hopefully if I give it a try again it can capture my attention this time.
