it seems the only way is to melee since casting spells ups technique points and does nothing for style. it seems I shouldn't bother with the style % quests unless I buy skills in the melee tree which I don't want to.

~Seriously, what are all you other mages doing? Only decent damage option I've found is spamming Pluto if you're lucky enough to get clustered groups of monsters. On the bright side, if you're playing Shadow Thunderland that's always.

But I'm pretty sure it's best to just melee (xxx -> uppercut -> rinse and repeat to a 50x combo)

I'd get level 1 dragon's fang (whatever it's called); it cancels into Weapon Uppercut and has nice range, so you can DF -> Uppercut -> whatever you want (physicals, magic missile, lantern firebomb, florae circle all work, though it's probably best to hit then florae circle as the enemy gets up). Easy 50% style by the end of the dungeon since you get lots of combos and lots of aerial hits. For 20/25 SP (can't remember the cost) it's definitely worth buying level 1 imo.

Uppercut and MM and Shururu maxed out to the best of my ability, plus Old Library.
