The competition in SC2 thus far has been a farce.
In big, bold letters too!
Why is the SC2 scene a farce?
It seems to be a matter of effort - not only is (Z)Jaedong talented, but he puts in the work. Former BW pros in SC2 have the mechanics and game sense that they gained through practice, and this is their advantage. But unless they can keep it up in the less structured environment of SC2 houses, they will certainly fall behind when high-level BW pros bring over their work ethic and determination.
Because all the players are lazy assholes who don't even care about the game, of course

I can tell you that as a person that absolutely does not care about BW, how does this even matter? I enjoy watching SC2 games because I enjoy watching the game itself and some of the personalities on the scene at the moment.
I say kudos to the pioneers of sc2.
I mean, how many people here honestly still come for BW? Something like 10% of the actual site?
What does that have to do with anything?

I'm apparently late to the party, didn't even see Artosis' twitter on the topic yesterday.
Harsh words from one of the biggest BW fanboys.

Your First TSL? :
TSL 3 (12076) 70% TSL 1 (2790) 16% TSL 2 (2423) 14%
So 70% at the very least, but that doesn't tell us how many of those who were around for TSL1/2 already have switched over to SC2 (I'd imagine quite a few).
Is there a way to gauge the activity of the BW and SC2 subforums?

But quality is a dreadful word for that, I think maturity is a better word. But for SC2 to grow, the younger and more quantitative fanbase is needed oh so much. So in a way it is a double edged sword.
Apparently the SC2 community is not developed enough to take such awesome (and opinionated!) posts. I honestly do not see why people take it so personal. Be happy that someone has a different opinion than you and learn from it. It does not harm you one bit. Or at least, it should not. i think talking down to sc2 players isnt mature or showing quality at all... I think that him eloquently writing down his (backed up!) view is actually very mature. Have you ever seen a Sports Illustrated with a cover story of "The Top 20 Reasons Football is For Retards?" OP may make a good argument, but it's needless inflammatory and condescending. Yes I've seen various of similar articles. In cycling for example after all the scandals. Or soccer and the defensive games that have been developed by prominent teams which basically ruined sports (e.g., the competition in Italy). The list goes on. Not the same at all. Scandals hurt the credibility of a sport. That's not the same as saying, "This sport sucks, the competition is such a joke." They notice something is wrong with the sport and they are not afraid to adress it. I get what you mean, but it is not that far off. I think it is incredibly awesome that TL throws this out there and I hope that someone gets inspired and writes a counter article which we can learn more from. People take stuff so serious these days.. :o If we didn't take SC seriously we wouldn't be here. Has TL ever run a front page article about how much of a farce BW is and how it's top players are actually pretty bad? When the TSL1-2 was running did TL run front page articles talking about how much of a sham it was because the best players weren't in it? Did TL ever run a front page article attacking the foreign scene because of how painfully dull its games were due to the lack of the top players? As far as running an article of BW and its top players being bad: There wasn't really much room for comparison as BW was the first of its kind
As for the other points: They didn't have to, because it was widely accepted and known that this was the case.

Sc2 fans think that MC and Nestea are amazing players but they want the best bw players to switch to know if they are really better. Bw fans don't want MC and Nestea to come back because they know that the best players are already playing the game.
Facts vs speculation.

This whole piece was one big poop on the SC2 scene that I and everyone I know enjoys. One big middle finger to all the casters hyping up some awesome play, some players bringing in some great energy and personality and all the fans that care deeply about SC2.
Man, does anyone actually care about Flash or Jaedong right now? They aren't in the scene and they're making big money playing sc1, good for them.

Because all the players are lazy assholes who don't even care about the game, of course No, it's because the players are not trying that hard because the game does not demand it from them. Take yourself for example - can't even make 50% winrate at D level on ICCup, is already Platinum in SC2. And you have played a LOT of BW games. Seems like there is some value to this argument, if a D level noob in BW can be "Platinum" in SC2. No wonder you are defending your cakewalk.

This in itself is worrying and disappointing, not to even mention the avalanche of venomous comments that followed from both sides, but mostly self-proclaimed BW veterans (e.g. Murderotica). It reminds me of all the reasons why I don't like frequenting forums, and makes me have second thoughts about spending my time here.
Isn't TL supposed to be above this kind of immature flame wars? Aren't mods and veteran posters supposed to lead by good example? What good could possibly come from this?

What an inflammatory article. I feel this does nothing more than stoke up more tensions between the people here for SC2 and what is left of the hard-core of BW fanatics here. This tension is the bigger elephant in the room.
EDIT: Why is this news? Shouldn't it be a featured blog or something?

I think I'm going to go play Starcraft, rather than keep arguing and eventually getting myself banned for being stupid.
I've been playing Brood War recently, and enjoying myself, but it's a little less appealing now. I think I'll play SC2 instead.

You aren't offended by people that think black people are inferior? Or that women are inferior? Or any one of a multitude of things that are, and should be offensive to rational-minded people? If someone is offended by something they aren't an adult? Really? Calling SC2 competition a farce is condescending, and that should be offensive to anyone that competes in SC2. MC? Hahaha, Broodwar scrub. What a farce. Nestea? Broodwar scrub. Total farce. Fruitdealer? Yet another scrub. Yet another farce. Cherry-picking statistics doesn't validate condescension. have you ever read a sports article in your entire life? and ffs drop the fucking comparison to racism and sexism. sports writers always call out athletes for being scrubs. thats why we read I have never in my life read a sports article on the front page of a sport's biggest website arguing that the sport in question was a farce. Have you ever seen a Sports Illustrated with a cover story of "The Top 20 Reasons Football is For Retards?" OP may make a good argument, but it's needless inflammatory and condescending. hello fellow american. have you ever read an article about american soccer or listened to jim rome talk about soccer obviously not On the FIFA site? Teamliquid isn't some guy, or even a big e-sports site. It's the BW/SC2 website. Granted, a large part of the reason Team Liquid is so big is because pro gamers post here, and we just ran a front-page article calling them a bunch of lazy pussies whose games are only good for comedy, so I hope they have thick skins. We are a news site, we are not blizzard. The top news sites have covered such topics, of course. I will stop complaining if you link me to an official news post in the last ten years on this site saying Brood War sucks, or even sucked at that particular time compared to some point in the past. Bonus points if it insults every single player and calls the scene a farce or some similar language. We had nothing to compare it to, or at least no other game. There has never been a similar game to BW. I'm sure that you can find some critical stuff if you look well though. TL has never been afraid to say what deserves to be said. Anyways, night time. Hope people can (learn to) appreciate another opinion. There's nothing scary about it. I care about the SC2 scene and enjoy watching all the games. I am glad this article was written.
I think the people who are not willing to look at this and say "Yeah we still have a long way to go", are giving one big middle finger to the people who care deeply about SC2.

Well done for all the work you put into this acrticle, but I must say it was a waste of time..
You said nothing that we already didnt know, nor did you really adress the fact that SC2 is in its infancy and to compare it to a game like BW, which is not only very different but also had a lot more time to develope into the game it is today.
You also skirted around the fact that ex BW competitive players such as Boxer, July and Nada are yet to really win anything major in SC2... They continuely get dominated by these players that you say are "noobs" such as MC and MVP... Why is that? Maybe these players have improved or maybe the 2 games are so different thats its totally pointless trying to compare them.
I find it amazing how many people there are out there trying to discredit SC2 pro gamers and the SC2 community. Its a great game with a heap of very talented pros that have found their niche. If youre not happy then GTFO but it looks nlike its here to stay..

Oh wait, it's done the complete opposite for 115 pages, thanks dickhead. No, I think it was the stupidity that arose from all the SC2 fans that has been doing that for over a year, and the BW fans trying to get simple concepts into their thick skulls, then the SC2 fans being pissed that they are being (rightfully) talked down to. This is just the best thread to vent that, and if you look through the thread, it's a pretty even division between people who take shits on this thread/argue with the OP while having no understanding of BW and people who agree with it. I think one of SC2's biggest advantages is the quality of it's fanbase compared to Brood War's. . Now, that is just flat out wrong... Explain. Look in a mirror. You basically said what I said but with less reasoning and even MORE blatant bias (I thought this part was impressive), and you tried to judge the entire BW community by a post that I made, all in one short post. Good job. Count the words in my post. Count the words in your post. I can be a jerk much more word-efficiently than you can! I love ruining my ethos to get attention. Shouting loudest works best. Screw all logic. Thanks for responding in a "word-efficient" way, I agree.
