Points to watch
1. Group of Death!
Before the excitement of the 2006 Shinhan Season 2 OSL Finals has died down, we rush straight into the qualifiers for the next season. 19 players have clawed their way through the preliminaries and clash with the 17 who remain from the last OSL (Canata has forfeited his Dual Tournament spot). The ODT begins now, and this week we are treated to a true Group of Death. Savior. Casy. Sea. Jaedong. One 3-time MSL champion. One OSL champion. Two super-rookies who know no fear. This group could easily be the final four of a major Starleague. But they meet here, where two must be denied entry to the next OSL. Two will fall back into the unpredictable preliminaries. Casy must advance to shake the OSL curse and get back to where he belongs. Savior must finally make it to the OSL, the holy land that has eluded him all throughout his career. Sea needs to get back to the OSL to set up his true breakout moment. And Jaedong is a hungry rookie who is owning it up in the Proleagues and ready to prove that he belongs with the best. If a Casy vs Savior showdown doesn't make you drool, check your pulse.
It's like Thunderdome: Four men enter. Two men leave. And we, the bloodthirsty crowd, get to enjoy five games filled with desperation, drama, and high-quality StarCraft.
2. MSL Survivor League Wild Cards
Once in a while there are scheduling quirks that lead to unusual situations. In this case, Boxer's enrollment is still being felt in the MSL qualifying tournament. His empty spot has lead to an unprecedented 7-man single elimination tournament, and the winner must take two Bo3s from Aqua to get to the next MSL. (Aqua only needs to win one Bo3). The tournament has many big names, all of whom would be worthy of the final spot in the next MSL.
The Next MSL is being sponsored by Gretech, better known as the people behind GomTV. GomTV is a media player and streaming internet tv service that is changing online media in Korea. They already broadcast CJ's Superfights, and now seem to be expanding their influence in the gaming scene.
Currently qualified for the next MSL are:
Terran: Canata (SKT), Light (MBCgame), Hwasin (STX), Iris (CJ), Xellos (CJ), Bifrost (OGN)
Zerg: Savior (CJ), Silver (Pantech), Jju (Samsung), Jaedong (Lecaf)
Protoss: Nal_Ra (KTF), Bisu (MBCgame), Pusan (MBCgame), Much (CJ), Free (Hanbit)
One spot remains open.
The seeds are: Savior, Silver, Nal_Ra, Jju.
3. Proleague Big Cards
Remember how I said last week that the proleague would pick up again? Well look at Sunday's schedule. CJ vs SKT. KTF vs Lecaf. Many big games with big names, with big stakes on the line. CJ and Lecaf look to secure the top spots in the rankings, while KTF and SKT are struggling to regain old glory. We will also see if SKT's one-league policy will result in good results. The other matches are also important. If you look at the rankings, 3rd to 6th are only seperated by one game. Considering that up to 4th place makes the playoffs, each game could be the difference between making the postseason or not, now more than ever.
