Back in the day when I was setting up clan-wars on the ESL ladder, it probably took me a sum total of around 11-12 hours to be totally comfortable with their site, it's a complete mess and utterly confusing for new users. I imagine a lot of them just give up.

Let's not ignore the fact that your opponent also had zero ways of contacting you, as you do not have any game accounts or contact info added to your ESL profile.
So really, don't just blame ESL for this.
Never mind, I'm an idiot.

Ah shit, I just now realize I wasn't logged in. Apologies.

I don't understand why you were the one disqualified if you couldn't find your opponent's contact and your opponent didn't contact you. How did they decide that your opponent was the one to get the walk over? It's really shitty that admins didn't even bother responding to you.

Yeah I never doubted that the info was there, only it was hard to find. Once I'm signed up and have read the rules, the only things I need are my opponent's b.net ID and a way to report the results. When I go to http://www.esl.eu/eu/sc2/wcs/america_2013season2_challenger_qualifier1/ these two things should be the most prominent pieces of information. The only other info should be the rules, instructions on how to contact an admin and dates for the other qualifiers. None of this information is there and I see so many links that could be relevant and lead me to the info I want, but aren't. The web page needed to fill this purpose can be so ridiculously simple. But ESL clutters their page with 90%+ self-advertisement.
Anyway, Sirrush, I don't know why you say that my opponent being unable to contact me is a reason to not blame ESL. It sounds like a reason for both of us to blame ESL.

If the players can't contact each other I guess it just becomes whoever reports it as a walkover first gets the win.

I've found out now that this is the page with all the info I needed http://wcs.battle.net/sc2/en/articles/sign-up-for-wcs-america-qualifiers
I did look at wcs.battle.net for info on WCS AM but the only related thing I could find was an entry on the schedule. Knowing that this article exists helped me figure out how to find it from the home page: Click on "news", scroll to the bottom and click "next", and then it's the first listed piece of news. I didn't expect instructions on how to report a match on the ESL web site to be in a 2nd page news article on the WCS site. Whatever

I think that site just gave me cancer.

I wasn't trying to imply that ESL wasn't to blame at all, merely partially. My reasoning was that while yes, the ESL site is horribly confusing, you had also (seemingly) not made any efforts to add contact details to your own account. Of course, I was wrong in this (because I wasn't logged in, which is also stupid), so I kind of invalidated everything I said.
Either way, I'm sorry about your experience being bad, I do agree that the walkover going to the other guy seems to be an extremely stupid move, especially after you've made multiple attempts to contact him (even via admins) and he seemingly did no such thing at all.
I hope you reconsider participating in the other qualifiers. :<

youre not the first person to complain about the esl site and for sure you wont be the last one. Its true, its pretty shitty, it does take some time to get used to.
its still weird that the other player didnt contact you. did you enable that option where people cant talk to you when they're not in your friendslist? that would explain something atleast.
But i dunno.. 3 hrs doing nothing? esl site is complicated.. but i think an intelligent person might be able to figure it out in that time. Even a friendly sos tweet, that you have a problem and dont know how to deal with it. I guess you would have had your answers in 30 seconds.
Its an unfortunate situation, but no need to give up. I would rather give up because of all dem koreans...

I don't know how full the channel was, but the Battle.net chat channels aren't the main channel for contacting the admins (not that easy to admin stuff with the SC2 chat interface). As far as I know it was #wcs.am on IRC Quakenet.
EDIT: To be fair, I found the channel on the WCS site, not via the ESL site. The ESL site has some stuff missing where it normally explains how to contact admins. Don't know if it's different when you are signed up. Some things ("Welcome", "Info and Details") seem to be different because it seems to be a makeshift page that normally serves European users.

While the general consensus is correct that the ESL site is trash is completely correct ESL admins asked for Tyler repeatedly in chat, PM'd him multiple times (which did not go through due to DnD mode) and eventually had a text sent to his phone all in an attempt to avoid giving the walkover. Unfortunately after over 2 hours of no response the decision was made to give the walkover. Nobody wanted this to happen, but to blame the system and criticize those who put in the effort to correct something that was not their fault is completely unjust.

I sat around for 30 minutes attempting to log in and get checked in only to have the site just... not work for me... Like, I just couldn't check in and I have no idea why. When I attempted to get into the WCS chat channel, after I had finally asked around and gotten the info, it was full and it wasn't until 15 after that I could even talk to an admin. They asked me if I had sent in a support ticket and I told them that I still had a support ticket open from over a week ago about not being able to link my account which was never answered. They said they couldn't put me in a spot for someone who had a walkover and just told me it was tough luck.
Probably a good move on their part at the end of the day but I was pretty sad that I was here on time and just couldn't play as the issues were beyond my control. I'm not sure if I was just getting shafted in the site timing out with everyone logging in or what but it was a pretty lame experience overall.
At least I avoided wasting my time vs all the koreans this qualifier. Perhaps the next one won't have as many... (the mentality of an Amateur NA player shining through here, right? haha.)

I ended up waiting around and doing nothing for three hours only to have my opponent advance over me without any games being played. I've never seen a site full of so much irrelevant information. Something like 90% of the links on the WCS AM qualifier tournament page are to things unrelated to the WCS AM qualifiers. Even something as simple as going to http://www.esl.eu/eu/sc2/wcs/america_2013season2_challenger_qualifier1/ and clicking "Play" is a completely false path. I never found any information on my opponent except his ESL site profile, which didn't show me his b.net info. I went in the b.net chat several times and asked admins how to play my match and never got a response. They weren't afk; they just didn't respond to my questions.
