(the TL app is ao primitive and i had my android keyboard...so slow) 16 tiles vs 13 tiles Chinese has no Riichi Japanese has no Flower Tiles (1 Flower Tile is basically a Kan) Bonus points+Dead wall Draw ummm wait let me fetch the list To Spazer's Credit # There is no organized discard pool in Cantonese # The concept of furiten does not exist in Cantonese # Riichi does not exist in Cantonese # Neither dora or red tiles exist in Cantonese # There are no flower tiles in Japanese # The Japanese point system is more complex since score is determined by a combination of fu and han as opposed to just fan. The Japanese system also counts points by hundreds as opposed to powers of two. # Japanese mahjong has no "chicken" hand (though getting a winning hand still isn't that hard because of open tanyao and yakuhai). # The list of yaku (possible scoring hands) in Japanese mahjong is larger # In Japanese, the player that deals out the winning piece pays the entire worth of the hand. In Cantonese, all players must pay the person with the winning hand, although the person that dealt the winning tile must pay more.
i play the canto style with my chinese friends all the time. At least I used to before I moved :/ But yeah I always thought the japanese style I saw in Akagi/Saki were waaaaaay more complicated. I guess this is why.

Singaporean/Malaysian mahjong is a variant similar to the Cantonese mahjong played in Malaysia. Unique elements of Singaporean/Malaysian mahjong are the four animal tiles (cat, mouse, cockerel, and centipede) as well as certain alternatives in the scoring rules, which allow payouts midway through the game if certain conditions (such as a kang) are met. You should play with us then Though, we should decide whether we are going to play Japanese or another variant of Mahjong.

Uh, playing g-sen, I see an untranslated line.
This will be weird since I can't type hiragana/kanji. [ ] denotes kanji.
J re wa, [eye] [sword under eight] no [now][behind] no [life] kikata o [look] tsumenao shitadakeda

The plot revolves around mafia, the elixir of life, and a band of friends. The characters are all unique and clash/meld with each other very well. There's suspense, comedy and action everywhere. The initial confusion the watcher has, is a good drive to make him watch further, and the pace at which the story becomes clearer is also very good. Not too much is revealed in every episode, but over the course of 15(16? 13?) episodes, the whole plot becomes clear and is very satisfying. The watcher is fed well-measured and well thoughout spoons of the story with each episode. Each one of those factors put together makes Baccano a great story.
In DRRR some characters have less depth than others and aren't as important to the story. DRRR has a linear story, although it's presented from different angles at times. DRRR is based on present day, with deliquent kiddos without kickass hats and suits to go along with it. Baccano is made to be badass while DRRR has a lot of focus on adolescents nowadays and their internet gangs/deliquent groups, with only a side dish of the world of adults. Although the Izaya and Celty parts are great, I regret the focus wasn't even more shifted in their favor.
I didn't get any of that you said about Baccano when I watched it. I thought the pacing was super slow, the end plot underwhelming and anticlimactic, and the overall plot really boring :|

Is there a English site where we could play Japanese mahjong together? Lucumo and I played the Chinese version for a bit right now (I'm even worse at that), but I think the Japanese version feels more interesting. Hm, apparently http://www.mahjongtime.com offers the Japanese variant. But you play with virtual money and it's less...arcade-like(well, not like the platform we used). Not sure whether you can really enjoy it without becoming a "real" member and paying money.
Well, it looks professional to say the least.
So if there are three other people who want to play the game, I'm ready

Im good at cantonese mahjong because my whole fam is good at it, though in HK rules have changed very recently (there is no point scoring anymore) which have dumbed down the game a lot
amongst private games still use advanced canto rules so its fun
Big 2 im pretty bad at
Chinese poker is pretty EZ theres not much to it
|
Big 2 is fun =]
Don't know how to play Mahjong though. Should I learn it if I want to read Legend of Koizumi?
|
ah that might be it hahah
|
Isn't OreImo 13 due out today?
|
btw I actually watch Nyaru-ani it was.... short and... weird hahaha but I liked the song. The episode is shorter than the OP xD
