http://tenhou.net/ Should work.
By the way something not mentioned in that thread is that japanese mahjong has tenpai, in that you cannot finish your hand with a tile equivalent to one you discarded. I don't think the other variants have that, and it makes stuff really tough.

I really need the rules, but right now it looks like I'm winning. I managed to be tenpai on every draw and now won with a ...
30 fu, 1 fan hand. Oops. I thought I had more points. xD

Hm, use wkipedia and learn by playing
Found where I used to play the game:
http://www.viwawa.com/en_US/game/Wahjong
And I don't know all the rules myself, like what gets you points etc. But I only played with "3 points to win" and it rarely happened that I didn't have enough.

afaik the 'updates' are just the updates from School Days to School Days HQ, the only difference should be translations.

omfg Jun arc. My day is complete.
Saki is good, but I still think that you have to know how to play before you can really appreciate it, much like Akagi. Otherwise, the sheer ridiculousness of some of things they pull off doesn't really register. Still, they usually do a pretty decent job of describing what's going on.
Hisa is the most bm player ever, and because of that, she is awesome. Edit: Reposting because it's too awesome + Show Spoiler +

I don't think the other variants have that, and it makes stuff really tough. Gonna copy paste my post from the Tenhou thread: + Show Spoiler +I'm fairly certain that the first set of rules I played with was Cantonese, and although it's similar to Japanese (being a variant and all), the rules are markedly different. For instance: - There is no organized discard pool in Cantonese
- The concept of furiten does not exist in Cantonese
- Riichi does not exist in Cantonese
- Neither dora or red tiles exist in Cantonese
- There are no flower tiles in Japanese
- The Japanese point system is more complex since score is determined by a combination of fu and han as opposed to just fan. The Japanese system also counts points by hundreds as opposed to powers of two.
- Japanese mahjong has no "chicken" hand (though getting a winning hand still isn't that hard because of open tanyao and yakuhai).
- The list of yaku (possible scoring hands) in Japanese mahjong is larger
- In Japanese, the player that deals out the winning piece pays the entire worth of the hand. In Cantonese, all players must pay the person with the winning hand, although the person that dealt the winning tile must pay more.
That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Basically, the Japanese variant is amazing because defending actually means something for once. The risk/reward of riichi-ing is also pretty interesting, imo.

Pointless Ron u wouldn't get any points for it so you can't ron I'm pretty much losing all the time because of that. :| Some tips:
Aim for a specific yaku when you're building your hand. If you're just doing random chis and pons you're going to be in huge trouble. Always think twice about chis and pons - you should never give up your ability to riichi without a good reason. After all, even if you have no yaku are in tenpai, you can still riichi and hope for some dora/uradora.
When someone else has declared riichi, take a good look at your hand. Is it really worth risking the payout to continue building on it? If not, then start playing it safe and take apart your hand. The tiles in each player's discard pool are very important. Each player cannot declare ron if the winning tile is one that is in their discard pool. This is called furiten. So if you want to defend against a specific player, start dealing out tiles that you can see in their discard pool. In Japanese mahjong, winning is good, but not losing is better.

Oh god, seems like Spazer is a pro. I somehow don't want to play with you anymore And yeah, I'm normally a person who builds random hands and hopes for the best in the end. It works on the beginner's level in non-japanese mahjong.
