Anyone know if Gamers! is good?
I was led to believe it would be a rom-com about awkward nerds, is this accurate?
Or is it one of those shows where they just say it's romance and tag it as romance but really it's "watch these kids fail to confess their feelings for 12 episodes and only at the very end does anything actually happen, btw read the source material if you wanna know what happens next"?
OTOH I thought Tsurezure Children was really nice this season...
Gamers! is amazing. It's an anime about gamers so dont go into it as another SOA or whatever. First and forremost it's a comedy show with romance as the theme/drive. From episode ~3 the anime takes a unique turn and sort of switch the main character. It's not your standard romcom, it's more of a comrom and it delivers exactly that very well.
It's hilarious and cute at the same time. So far the ending is starting to look appearent, unless there's a S2.

I mean I literally said that I am expecting it to be a rom-com with nerds in it, not sure where you draw the SAO comparison from...
But is there actual romance, or just one of those shows where they only get together in the final episode (if that, some "romance" comedies like Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-Kun they don't even have the common courtesy to do that... -_-) ?

There is actual romance between multiple pairs and unlike 99% other romcoms it happen earlier than last/second last episode. The anime really takes off from episode ~3 with the switch/introduction of the new character so I'd suggest you give it more than the initial episodes if you try it out.

Sweet dude, that alone places it above most romance shows that I've seen lol.
I'll give it a shot when it's finished.

If it's justified (e.g. they're nerds so duh) I'm probably gonna be ok with that.

Gamers! is the worst type of romcom with ridiculous bullshit misunderstandings and retarded drama. The actual gaming aspect of the show feels shallow--basically 'oh look at all these different types of games there are' and a blatant attempt to tap into the market of the videogame fanbase. It has guilty gear and p4a though so I can't hate it that much >_<

Hmm... can you go a bit more into detail on the first part?

Without spoiling too much
+ Show Spoiler +although the first two episodes set up the relationships nicely it falls flat on its face after that with ultra dense characters and misunderstandings like people never explaining themselves, thinking their love interest is cheating on them, and too much relationship drama in general. Isn't this supposed to be about games? Why can't we have a cute show like K-on! or Lucky Star which has actual interesting content about things other than middleschool romance? Hope this explains more

It would be better if it was a sports anime
btw I'm still recovering from my romcom PTSD I got from watching nisekoi in 2014

I think Gamers! is a very "either you love it or hate it" show.

From MAL: This is a story that revolves around certain students and one hobby. Amano Keita is our lonely protagonist who has a passion for gaming and is friends with Uehara Tasuku, who is secretly a fellow gamer and is someone who believes his life is perfect. We also have Karen Tendou, the club president of the video games club and Chiaki Hoshinomori, who constantly bickers with Keita. This is a story filled with a non-stop sequence of comedy scenes and misunderstandings. Our chaotic romantic comedy now begins! It's a show about people who play games and their relationships, not the actual games themselves. And unfortunately that there's a ton of stupid misunderstandings that go with it.

Hmm that doesn't sound so good... I mean I've managed to enjoy some shows that did this, but I enjoyed them in spite of this problem rather than because of it. But after seeing a lot of anime like this where they just draw out the inevitable in tedious and frustrating ways with bad writing... idk.
I guess I'll give it a shot still, and if it's not worth it I'll just stop watching partway through.
Thanks everyone for your input.

Beyond the misunderstanding part (which is ultimately irrelevant to my case for instance), would you say that ShruykaN's complaints about the writing of the rom-com itself are accurate?

Yeah that's a lot of complaints about trashy romcoms/harems. Misunderstandings that could easily be solved if the characters actually just talk to each other. But then the show would be over. If ShruykaN wants something like those, Ore Monogatari! is a relatively recent one that's like that, and is a pretty good romcom. It finds the comedy in something other than the misunderstandings.
Since ShruykaN's asking for "Why can't we have a cute show like K-on! or Lucky Star which has actual interesting content about things other than middleschool romance?", that's just a slice of life, not so much a romcom =\.
I had the same issues with Gamers! at first too, then realized and concluded it's about the characters, not the games they play.
My personal opinion on it, it's more on the comedy side rather than romantic. It's pretty amusing the conclusions they come to when they're confiding in friends, or just thinking in their heads, and then see something (unrelated) happen that they feel justifies their hypotheses.

Misunderstandings! would've been a more apt title. I don't know why I've watched it this far considering it's everything I hate about romcoms. + Show Spoiler [Gamers] +It also pisses me off that they pull the whole "I'm falling for Aguri all over again!" bit and proceed to ignore it for the remainder of the show.
Princess Principal ended as expected - with a mediocre plot. The show had some pretty good episodic stuff, but fell absolutely flat on its face with a lot of the actual story. Not much point in pretending everyone's a spy when they're gallivanting about the city half the time. The flashback ep was probably the best of the bunch. Also, Chise is literally Goemon in loli form, for better or for worse.
Dive had some good ideas with terrible execution. These shows don't usually get into the nitty gritty of actual sports, like what athletes have to sacrifice, loss of freedom when the advertising conglomerate exerts their will, etc. Problem is, they show this drama by doing silly stuff like + Show Spoiler [Dive] +literally getting NTR'd by your brother. It was even worse because the girl got around 5 minutes of screentime total before they pulled the twist. You can't make this shit up.
Nana Maru San Batsu was forgettable. The trivia itself was actually pretty good, but the characters sucked.
Bahamut s2 suffers the same fate as s1. A ton of potential ruined by awful plot. A bunch of stuff happened in episode 23, but none of it was executed in a particularly satisfying manner. The romance in the series took up way too much screentime and had minimal payoff. The rest of the cast still give off flashes of brilliance... when they actually get to do things. It's a real shame.
Knights & Magic was okay. I feel nothing for the characters, but the arms war is pretty neat. Some of the fights are good too.
Shoukoku no Altair was not very good in the first cour. Things picked up after Mahmut gathered his crew of merry men, but that took far too long. + Show Spoiler [Altair] +The continued appearance of that masked woman is maddening. Yeah sure, it's handwaved with "Mahmut is a pacifist", but that doesn't even make sense considering he kills other people no problem when fights break out. He's organizing a triple assassination for crying out loud. That said, there's still some potential here. I hope it pays off.
Fate/Apoc continues to be the worst entry in the series. Prilya BDs when.
Ballroom e Youkosou is good... when it's actually animated. Which is rarely. When they're showing stills with speedlines for half the dance, it's incredibly underwhelming. I get that it's not easy adapting something as dynamic as dance, but man, it really kills the mood.
Centaur no Nayami was actually good. Niche as hell though I suppose.
So overall, there's nothing that even comes close to dethroning Made in Abyss as AOTS for me.
|
Princess Principal started okay/average and ended mediocre. The whole underlying plot was obvious by like episode 2/3 so when it hit in like episode 10 it was basically a "wow, really? took this long?" moment.
Ninja loli fighting her dad ninja was cool though.

Probably even from the synopsis before watching the first episode. So it didn't feel like a show that would focus on the games at all to me and I never got into that misunderstanding (hehehe) about what the show is going to be like as ShurykaN did.
I would actually also somewhat agree with Spazer that it is kind of curious as to why we keep watching it. It is usually one of those aspects of the genre that annoys me. And yet Gamers! is somehow making it work really well for me. Take the Game-of-HalfLife episode for an example. I can see how some people might not enjoy that because it's "pointless" and only playing up the misunderstandings further but I was just sitting in my chair laughing like a madman through most of it.
As much as I'm touting New Game!! to be the AoTS for me, Gamers probably takes it if I have to be honest for a second. (aside from Owarimonogatari). The comedy is certainly the main focus of the show and it's just right for me. That being said comedy in particular is hard to recommend imo, so could be really hit or miss for different kind of people.

Why would the show be over? Why not just have good writing that deals with actual real world problems instead of imaginary problems created in their head by insecure teenagers?
By far the biggest reason why I personally love CLANNAD: After Story is that it actually tackles questions such as:
- What happens after you graduate from high school? - Joining the workforce - Getting married and living together - Having a child and others.
Leaving aside personal opinions about the characters of CLANNAD or the emotional gutpunches that the writers employ (because some people love to be contrarian about this) simply touching on those topics to begin with, in a competent way, is enough to make it easily one of the top 5 romance anime I've ever seen.
Somewhat similar would be Honey & Clover which is set in an art university and ends up covering issues like:
- I'm in college and I have no idea what the fuck I want out of life - How do I stop loving this person who clearly turned me down on multiple occasions and move on with my life - How can I get close to the person I love who is much older than me and also happens to carry some very serious emotional baggage from previous relationships and others.
I resent the notion that there cannot be compelling romance or love-fuelled drama without childish misunderstandings.
And for the complete opposite approach, you have Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou (His and Her Circumstances) which is a high school rom-com produced by Gainax in 1999 and wherein the comedy and romance are NEVER at odds with one another, wherein tropes are always quickly and cleverly subverted, and everything feels very natural and expertly executed.
That's a big ass off-topic huh. Sorry for the rant, I'm just very bitter about the lack of excellent romance in anime...
---------------------------------------
If anyone else finds themselves as frustrated as I am at the state of romance anime, maybe check a look at Tsurezure Children which just finished airing earlier this week. It's like they took a bunch of different high school romance stories and only serve you the moneyshots, no tedious excruciating waits for anything to happen, no more suffering from a complete lack of escalation for episodes on end, just full on adorableness and comedy.

@Spazer how does Centaur no Nayami compare to winter season's Demi-chan wa Kataritai? Similar atmosphere? More on the chill side? More on the funny side? Is it as well executed?
