Imaishi's works tend to be polarising and I guess that's also true for his characters. I liked Ryuko but that was probably because I'm a sucker for tomboys + it was refreshing to have a girl that did all the stupid, brutal non-sense without thinking about it first instead of another male dipshit. And she did have her soft side as well.

No i watched a dirty leak
The leak is pretty good (it's a leak of a screening) but obviously not the same as going into the theatres (high quality, but has multiple subs, chinese and english, and also has reference numbers on the top right and a watermarked "screening only" message every now and then)
AMAZING movie. Super feels, CLEARLY the best work/movie that makoto has ever done. Super unexpected and very enjoyable and emotional
Tbh if anything else, i just want to share my excitement at how great it was haha
---
On the downsides, it's not the "deepest" thing in the world (it's just anime, and uses anime plot devices and stuff ofc) but it ranks 10/10 on the enjoyment scale. Don't spoil yourself! The MAL synopsis is actually a good one because it doesn't spoil anything
definitely the kind of film i'd be happy to re-watch with my friends (or a girl :^) ) a few times. Universal appeal though!
if anyone else has actually watched it, feel free to start a spoiler thread

Regalia is finally back on the episode it should be :D.
Hmm I thought this sousei no onmyouji arc is suppose to be 8 episodes but I'm not seeing an end to it anytime soon.

Universal appeal though! if anyone else has actually watched it, feel free to start a spoiler thread I thought it was fine, but nothing special. Visuals were really good (I mean, it's Shinkai). Plotwise, I have my gripes. It's definitely the best film I've seen from Shinkai though.
+ Show Spoiler [Buncha stuff] +Roughly one half of the movie is spent on bodyswap business. This is probably my favorite part of the movie. It gets played up for humor here, but I still prefer when this stuff gets taken more seriously, like in Shishunki Bitter Change (which is never going to get adapated, but I digress). Then the two of them fall in love. Kinda abrupt, but it's a romance film, so whatever, it's fine.
When the body swaps stop happening, it clued me in to the rest of the plot immediately. I can't remember where I've seen it before, but "person talks to another person in a different time without knowledge of this" is no longer novel to me. A fair amount of time is spent fucking around trying to piece together what happened. I wasn't particularly fond of this part.
My main problem with the movie is its insistence on creating needless drama. The whole memory loss thing at the end is a prime example of this. What did this add to the story? Their reunion scene is nice and all, but I feel the impact of the scene wouldn't be negatively affected if they remembered each other. After all, the memory loss takes up a grand total of five minutes.
Similarly, the bomb plan was dumb. First the evacuation worked, then it didn't work, but then we're told it worked in the end? The way it was handled was really strange. Ultimately, I think the entire subplot about Mitsuha's father seemed wholly unnecessary.
tl;dr it was okay. The pacing felt a little weird at times. I'm tempted to say that the story would've worked better as a TV series than as a movie. Overall, I'd say Kimi no na wa is similar in tone/levity to something like Tokyo Godfathers, but the latter is better structured as a movie.

Damn, you guys are temping to watch a leak. Ugh. Must be strong. I think I want to wait and go in with the real deal so the visuals aren't cheapened.

I watch a lot of shit on a netbook that can barely fit a 480p video, so I'm far less picky with video quality these days.

+ Show Spoiler +Yeah i kind of agree on a lot of what you said. That being said, for me enjoyment is the no1 most important factor, where it scores highest for me. There was a lot of needless drama (i think the whole memory loss thing was kinda dumb), but it allowed for a very nice last 10 minutes where they frantically search for someone they are in love with but don't know who they are, it's very heartwarming and cute haha I do think they coulda done it without the memory loss though, or it could be better handled at least. The plan was kind of over the top, all in the name of drama still I think a lot of the drama introduced is necessary because it's fun and kind of what makoto does the best (pulling your feelstrings lmao), and the universal aspects of the film, characters and plot were all done very well so i'm OK with the drama I didn't read any spoilers except for the MAL (i did reas somewhere about a disaster, but i had no idea until the movie made it obvious so i didn't get spoiled) I think it's really really important to watch this show without being spoiled, otherwise the whole 20 minute drama of finding out wtf is going on and then realising shes dead and possibly gone for good doesn't work, and it's also makoto's strength in creating tragic inescapable event haha
oh yeah, and the visuals, music and directing were AMAZING. These all score 10/10 without a doubt. Especially the directing of the movie, so many of the key moments were handled suuuper well with the visuals, music and plot all lining up together and is probably the subtle hero of the whole experience

Well, generally speaking it's not too much of a pain. After all, we managed to live through 144p BW streams. However, for things that are built on their visual appeal, like Shinkai movies, 480p wouldn't be what I wanted.
|
I've never been fussed about quality personally
480p is good, 720p or anything better is perfect for me lol
I guess it's because i've spent so many years in front of my screen that i like it, and i'm just comfortable with my own setup lol
|
I only settle for sub 720p if the show is too old for anything else to be available, to be honest.
I want good visuals for my visual medium.
|
I refuse to watch anime anything outside 4k on a 144hz monitor.

Drama is a valuable tool for creating tension and getting people invested in the story, but it has to be well written, or it comes off as being trite to me.
Going back to the dad subplot, it's pretty clear that he's grown distant from the family. At the end of the evacuation scene, Mitsuha confronts him, and then... nothing? We can assume from future events that they reconciled and actually continued the evacuation, but it doesn't make much sense when he wasn't willing to believe her in the first place. More importantly, where's the payoff? The whole point of having drama like this is the catharsis when things get solved.
I'm getting old and jaded too, so that doesn't help.
The combination of music and visuals was good, but I'd still rate DYRL higher.

It really depends on the size of the monitor though. I got a 19" 5:4 screen. It's perfect for me and I love to play games with this monitor. This also means that 720p is already max resolution for my screen (because of the 16 or 16:10 for shows/movies) and looks as sharp as it can get. I still wouldn't touch a Shinkai movie at 480p. I usually aim for 720p+ for everything. Some of the older, less popular stuff just isn't (easily) available at 720p and then I go for 480p. Genius Party is 480p for example, which is a shame.
|
720p is just fine. iirc the only reason emnjay goes for 1080p (even on HS releases which are all upscaled 720p TV releases) is because that apparently makes the subtitles better for him somehow and nothing else. Probably talking about size or sharpness, idk lol I do go for 1080p for things I really like myself once BDs are out but honestly no idea if it makes a difference.
And I know the 144hz monitor thing was a joke but there's apparently hardly anything that's produced at even 24 frames per second or even at a stable framerate. That's supposedly the reason why CG is so bad for Anime: They look at the cut they're doing and then depending on wether it's a scene that will need a higher framerate like an action scene they'll decide that it will get more attention and other scenes will just be fine with lower framerates. So really the original framerate changes dynamically through an episode of anime or even through a cut with different parts of the cut running at different framerates and software was apparently really really crappy with dealing with those dynamic changes so they're probably (from here it's my interpretation on it) just really behind on it because it was so unpractical for anime. I'd assume it's better by now but who knows.
Or well, at least I read that sometime ago on ANN from the guy who answers questions and all.

720p for modern weekly releases 1080p for BD releases whatever you can get for old stuff

Don't watch much weekly stuff though so mainly the BD releases.
edit: Randomly decided to go rewatch soul eater. Man Bones is so so good. Love the visuals.

I stick to 720p since my laptop resolution is pretty close to that. Looks really sharp and easy to read subtitles.

Ok, so there is still a week until most of the new shows come out and I feel like I'm up for some mystery stuff. Screened my backlog and picked 3 shows: Nijuu Mensou no Musume, UN-GO and xxxHolic. Should I go with a specific one first or just throw a die?
