If you come in here looking for "anime recommendations" then please refer to this chart before posting: Anime Recommendations (as of may 2014). We also have an IRC channel called #tladt where we all hang out. The channel is on Rizon, not QuakeNet! Feel free to check it out. TLADT discord is Discord.gg

I don't know about that. For me it was a really frustrating watch. The whole presentation, as in animation, sound, art-style and so on, was fucking great but the content was lacking for the longest time. For the first 8 episodes I only enjoyed the action bits. The humour was terrible and the conversations and drama boring as fuck. Episodes 9-11 were amazing. The last episode was a bit underwhelming again. I would definitely watch a season 2 in hopes it will be as good as episodes 9-11. If the show had maintained this quality over the whole course of the show it would have been my AotS for sure and maybe even AotY. But as it is it felt kind of weak.

I liked it a ton from start to finish but episode 8-12 were by far the best. I love ONE's writing and characters.

Also neat to see him(ONE) be key animator for the very last bit of the episode.

I had slightly different thoughts. Agree that the last couple of episodes were amazing but I don't think the first 8 were that much different (not as much action packed but they were establishing a lot of stuff at the time as well). The presentation and everything else was amazing though, really enjoyed mob psycho and hope we get a second season!

Pretty much sums up my thoughts on the show. Really lacking unless it was one of the well choreographed/animated fights.

I definitely expected more of a payoff from the last 100%.

It's on Crunchyroll. Also, it starts with a preview that suggests there will be a Sakamoto movie.

Heh. Not a great episode; lots of flashback/clips, and the new stuff was remarkably similar except for the end.

Also, just finished Orange. + Show Spoiler +
Having been someone who, at that age, was strongly suicidal, it hits pretty close. Cultural differences aside, that's quite a look at depression and suicide; something I'm given to understand is only recently being seriously looked at in Japan. I wonder if the movie will show what happens in the new alternate world, with Kakeru alive - or maybe it'll look at how Suwa deals with knowing that he could have had the person he loved and didn't. Seriously, in the entire series, in the new Kakeru-lives world, I can't figure out how Suwa could get through all of that without becoming extremely depressed himself. I was expecting a twist ending with Suwa dying instead of Kakeru.
Pretty heavy but a good anime.

Well, no I didn't know that. Seems a little far fetched to me. I mean, it could certainly be true but sometimes people spin their ideas too far and give the author too much credit.

As for ep13, is was so-so. Wasn't bad but mostly recap and redone jokes, which really wasn't what I was excepting. Especially if you consider that the director (?) said that the ep13 was specifically done for TV release and that he is that it couldn't air and had to be released as OVA. I couldn't spot anything that fits that discription here.

//Master Keaton ep21 was amazing. It's my favourite along with ep14 now. History can be so fascinating when told right, even if fictional. And it was only about the heritage of a single, random soul.

Agreed, it's a top favorite of mine ever since I watched it. You really don't have to particularly like basketball going into it, it turns you and makes you a believer.

watch slam dunk.

Wow, you tricked me into watching an anime that stops when it's supposed to start. So cruel senpai.
I think esports is pretty nice.

I picked up two wecomics on deviantart, written by Wenqing Yan (yuumei). One's called Fisheye Placebo and the other's called Knite (only one chapter). I really enjoyed both of them which surprised me. Fisheye Placebo, while playing in a dystopian world, seems to be a little more light-hearted with well-placed humour here and there. While I was reading those I started asking myself: when there is so much talent out there, why do we mostly get shit anime these days? So unfair.

That is like asking why we get so many shit movies. Same reasons but probably amplified because it doesn't have nearly the amount of money Hollywood does and less ways to generate revenue.

I know the superficial answer to that question of course. My question was more along the lines of: Why is shitty stuff always so popular and spreads like a wildfire while good stuff often remains largely unknown?

Well because taste is subjective. What you find shitty obviously a lot of people did not if its hugely popular, sometimes you agree with the majority sometimes you don't. The industry also just isn't that large and I think you are slightly exaggerating the whole diamond in the rough that no one knows but is really good.

but both bad and good stuff get popular. quality is definitely not the biggest factor of success.

Do you really think I don't know that? Might care to tell me why taste is subjective, why it is subjective in the way it is, how it develops and why it is leaning the way it is? As I said, I wasn't looking for the obvious, superficial answer. Why would I? I know those answers, I'm not stupid, even though it might seem that way at times. It's just that those questions, that don't really have answers yet, pop right into my head and I have to get the emotional impact of my chest by writing them down.

You are right. It just feels like there is way more shit being popular. But that's probably because there is way more shit out there in general, depending on the standards.

Taste tends to be the generic answer which obviously has a lot of truth in it but I think there's more to the story than just that.

One of the things people don't mention is "timing". Most people don't have a lot of free time so what they do with that free time tends to be very selective. People don't stray from their comfort zones during this time generally because a poor result will mean they wasted their limited free time. That's why you see companies stick with things they know works, because people in turn know they are of a certain standard.

Circulation is another key thing. Anime industry is a great example of an industry changing to adopt a more niche market approach in order to survive. The one issue with this approach is that it creates a problem of expansion and circulation. The more they focus on the niche the less likely they are to grab targets outside that niche. A show that's targeted outside that niche may just be discarded by both the general populace as "stuff for that niche" and within the niche itself. So you just land up with something that doesn't sell at all.

Anyway it should be obvious what's the biggest factor for popularity in anime. Girls. Any anime you see hyped up to a certain level almost always has a large part of the hype surrounded by certain female characters in the show. Even if you ignore this you can see by how much anime focuses on supporting female characters. They wouldn't do this if it wasn't for the fact that it's proven to work. Just looking at the last year of anime, what was hyped the most? Boobstring, Rem: Zero, Emo music show, and something else I forget. I should say teenage power fantasy is also a big one along with homoerotic male sports shows. Think the former ties into the girls part though while the latter is just not something I want to mention...

Having said all that I don't think anime has an issue of there being disproportionate amount of bad to the good. All media has this issue. It's just anime is smaller and more focused thus it feels worse. You just don't really get exposed to the mountains of trash that TV/Movies come up with every year.

Yeah Numy, I agree with that completly. Your post is pretty on point. I also never said that other media doesn't produce as much shit. In fact, it does. There is a reason I don't watch TV. For one it's pretty outdated in the age of the internet where it's way easier and comfortable to go with your schedule/be spontaneous. Secondly, there is so much cancer on TV it's just not worth it. I just used anime as an example because the webcomic was manga-esque and we are in an anime thread.

In other news, I have finished up Master Keaton. It was very solid in my opinion. Some stories seemed a bit weaker, especially in the beginning, and some stories were amazing (again, ep14 and ep21 are my favourites) but it always maintained a certain degree of quality throughout, which is a good thing. I'm going to put the OVAs on my ptw.
