I think everything with Domel was the high point of the series, and it all went downhill from there. The finale was very obviously rushed, with a bunch of time spent trying to make the Garmillas Empire more sympathetic. They failed miserably on that point. Overall, it was a fun ride, but I don't think I'd ever rewatch it. The ending was too bad for that. Some plot elements are necessary because this is a remake, Okita's death being one of them. Being such an old series, there's also a lot of weird stuff that they need to work around. For instance, Dessler appears in basically every single Yamato series, so he might actually still be alive in the 2199 universe. Who knows. For this and other reasons, I don't really have much faith in the writing of the 2199 sequels. There's another Yamato movie that's already out, by the way. I haven't gotten around to watching it though. + Show Spoiler + Elk Domel was a good villain, yes. Wolf was also really cool, he just didn't have enough screen time. What felt weird was that they rushed in the end but still had time for that bikini and ice cream crap. I read up on the upcoming Yamato 2202 and apparently it's a remake of Yamato 2. According to MAL Dessler is a main character in Yamato 2, so that means he is still alive in a series that plays 3 years after his death? Amazing. I read through some opinions and the gist of it is that Yamato 2 is the best installment of the universe so I have some hope. Yes, I noticed the movie. Apparently it's a sidestory close before the finale.

@Miragee - Have you seen the female uniforms? Fan service isn't forced, it's literally part of the show! Praise be.

That robot episode was pretty cool yes. I think it was meant to be a homage to a lot of older sci-fi works. At least it had quite a lot of references. There is some forced fan service later on, wait for it. ![]()

Also started Master Keaton. Good first episode. I think I found a MacGyver here. Btw. why do these older seinen anime almost always feel natural while lots of modern seinen feel like clown shows for an immature audience? //Saw this coming up for fall: https://myanimelist.net/news/47655690 Literally toilett humour.

New Game! showed signs of getting its act together last week, and this episode continues that trend of improved execution. Rather than going through the motions and banking on the appeal of its cast, the series is putting in the work to tell entertaining stories and offer the occasional snippet of insight. Last impressions tend to linger the longest in viewers' minds, so this recent uptick in quality may have arrived at just the right time as the season approaches its final stretch. Highest rating out of all the episodes for last week, together with ep3 which got the same rating. I don't particularly mind it since it's quite obvious that I like the show in general, so other people liking an episode I didn't is hardly something bad~ Just curious that it probably was the worst episode for me myself lol

Nene ruins this part of the show for me. Also, not enough salary jokes in recent episode. I'd rather watch shachiku

"entertaining stories" and "snippets of insight" is not how I would sum up New Game! in general and the recent episodes in particular. It is a silly show through and through, from the premise to the characters to the "hardships". It's a show of cute girls doing cute things, that's really all there is to it. + Show Spoiler [New Game! 10] + This episode is a great example of why the show has absolutely no meat to it. It's an empty shell, devoid of any story that is worth telling. To sum it up, the episode was about everyone buying donuts (because they are 50% off), as well as Aoba and Nene having a "fight" because Nene thinks that Aoba works too hard and Aoba says that it's because she has a dream. I am baffled as to why anyone would call this an "entertaining story". I can see why someone who likes to look at cute girls finds enjoyment in this, but calling it an entertaining story is taking it way too far. It's pretending to see greatness where none exists. I also finished Yamato 2199, all that talk about the show made me curious and I had some time to waste. + Show Spoiler [Yamato 2199] + The first half of the show was fairly entertaining, although that entertainment came mostly from the space battles. The 2nd went downhill until it crashed and burned towards the end. There were a lot of small things that bothered me throughout the entire show: -Gamillas are essentially totalitarian human racists that want to conquer galaxies. Their leader is an unsympathetic megalomaniac that is as retarded as his advisers. You cannot paint it more black and white even if you tried to. -A lot of inconsistencies regarding the way Gamillas communicate. It switches between Gamilla and human language at random. They call planets, time and distance with different names, but other things are completely the same. -Their choice of officers seems to be totally random and not based on merit. The same could be said for the tasks assigned to each of them. Apparently Kodai is not just an incredible pilot, but also a good tactics officers AND probably the best soldier for regular combat as well, which is why he has to be at the front line of every conflict in the show. -Is there any reason why the female crew members have to wear tight bodysuits (except for the nurse) aside from fanservice? Sure, it's still better than what most other shows do in terms of female uniforms, but still, somewhat unnecessary. -Ship weapons have come a long way, but pistols still need to be... pulled at their end? And they made those typical "I am readying my pistol" sounds despite being energy weapons. Small things aside, the most glaring problem throughout the show was the amount of "oh, what a lucky coincidence". Gamillas board the ship to look for Mori and find her right away, because she, as an officer, is totally wandering around in some random parts of the ship during combat. They land in a random spot on a random planet to find the one thing that will make their entire journey possible in the first place. When searching for Mori, Kodai flies towards an unknown planet that just so happens to be the prison planet where Mori is being held for a short time. And on the same day they crash on that planet, a riot sparks that allows them to get away and... ah whatever, you get the idea. I didn't really feel like the Yamato was in any danger at all, especially after they managed to break through tens of thousands of enemy ships without sustaining crippling damage. The same could be said for any member of the main cast, which all had amazing plot armor throughout the show. Even the fat traitor managed to survive the exploding prisoner area, only to land on a prison planet, only to be freed and then to be randomly sucked into the riot, only to survive said riot and THEN land on the submarine ship thing that helps out the Yamato in the end. I think his story is a great example of what is so wrong with shows like that. I am not even going to talk about the ending... or Desler... or that general who had to return to his home planet SECONDS before he would've been able to blow up the Yamato. It's a shame that there were so many problems with the plot and characters and stuff, because the art was surprisingly good and there were some solid episodes overall.

I think it is great, but just at what it did for the most part so far: light hearted comedy without much to it. And really cute at that. So imo the last episode was a bit more on the serious side of things, or at least tried to do that and it just felt out of place for me, hence saying that to me it was the worst episode. I wouldn't want a K-ON episode with them having a fall out and getting together again either (inb4 that actually happened and I'm just forgetting about it). I really couldn't care less about "character developement" for the show.

Anyway why are people getting all emotional about some stupid ANN review that is so dam pretentious it's incredible. People need to learn to just call an apple a fucking apple and not pretend it's this golden fruit of enlightenment.

People need to learn to just call an apple a fucking apple and not pretend it's this golden fruit of enlightenment. I am fully aware that it is just that, I even wrote that I know it's just "cute girls doing cute things"... and I am by no means upset about it not being more than that. But people pretending that it is more than that are just silly. The highest rated review on MAL has this as the first line of the review: Do you like an amazingly written plot which actually moves forward very subtly[...]? Then New Game! is the anime for you!

People love to lie to themselves about why they enjoy shit. Can't just accept they love the random panty shots and cute girls doing random stuff. There always has to be some kind of "higher" merit to it all. Just ignore it. Forget about these people. Find someone who has similar tastes and opinions as you as use that as a baseline for "watchablility" of a show.

Find someone who has similar tastes and opinions as you as use that as a baseline for "watchablility" of a show. To be fair, I generally only pay attention to reviews that give a low or lower than average rating. I don't care about fangirls gushing on how amazing something is and seeing incredible things where none exist. Negative reviews, however, usually point out the flaws in the show - and every show has flaws. Looking at those is a much better indicator of whether the show is watchable or not. The 3/10 review for New Game! on MAL is way more useful, for example. It clearly establishes that the show is "cute girls doing cute things" and some light comedy without an overarching story that has any merit. While the review is too negative overall, it helps to spot the faults in the show and tells me what kind of mindset I need to have in order to find enjoyment in it. Whether or not a show is watchable is largely influenced by how much I can tolerate the flaws. Out of the people here, Miragee is probably the closest one in terms of taste. Aside from a few exceptions (LotGH, Monster, Gakkugourashi, Monogatari and Kara no Kyoukai), our ratings on MAL are either the same or very close.
