I also don't get why Luffy is duking it out with regular attacks, wasn't the "penetrating Haki attack" his trump card previously? Big Mom lost but it at least was a serious 2v1 against two very strong opponents. I agree. Also, how dead is bowler hat CP0? Kaido might legit bite off his head then baseball bat it all the way back to Marijois.

I bet he has often contemplated what a fair fight against Oden would have been like. Yes, its disappointment from what I can see. There is kind of an irony for the chapter title and what Kaido says to Luffy. "The victor needs no epithet (or excuse depending on translation)." Kaido says it, but doesn't really believe it. He has doubts about whether he could have beaten Oden, and saw the fight with Luffy as a way to finally defeat a major challenger on Oden's level in a fair fight (none of the other legends he saw behind Luffy in that one scene has ever lost to Kaido in a fight).

Feels like his DF had a ton of attention this arc, so if it's a forbidden fruit maybe it's containing some of joyboy's spirit or something similar?

Edit: re-read the chapter on big screen, the moltenish face with the smirk on the last panel gave me the worst kind of Bleach-like vibes.

Or real person teleported by Kiku's ability as well? There is A LOT to unpack here. + Show Spoiler + As far as we know Joy Boy was a real actual person who lived 800 years ago during the Void Century. He was also very influential because he's mentioned in both Mermen arc and Wano arc. He WROTE the poneglyph at mermaid island... I'm unsure about the others. He and the elephant-island knew each other personally from back then, 800 years ago. Anything that has to do with the Void Century gets the World Government's jimmies rustled HARD. They want to eradicate any public knowledge of it, Luffy was judged somehow a potential danger linked to Joy Boy. In the last panel you see Luffy melting and smiling. I personally think that during his brief "death" (heart stopped) he attained some sort of enlightenment, and can now awaken his devil fruit, hence why he's smiling and giggling to himself. He might also be in some kind of a trance of some sort... his brain unconscious and his body just acting naturally. Kinda like a drunken brawler or something. Also in the last panel the SFX in japanese is "nika" (grin/smile) and entirely (not) coincidentally, Nika is an actual character in the story as well... Nika was a legendary warrior in ages long past (i think older than Joy Boy) who in his time freed slaves and brought joy & happiness to everyone around him. He is usually represented by the sun symbol. The merman former slaves - now pirates - worship this mythological Nika and tattoo a sun over their slave crests. Nika was I believe (IIRC) first mentioned in the Skypeia arc with Enel? He kinda looked like a caricature of luffy, with the rubber arms and legs... might've been foreshadowing a link between them or just a red herring for people to fight over IDK. Nika was also depicted (as a deity) with flaming hair/head like a lot of our world's deities of wisdom in Buddism (I assume?) You can speculate further that because Teach is the "Darkness" then that would make Luffy the "Light" or "Sun". They have been shown over and over again as being polar opposites of each other, and I'm certain their fight will determine the outcome of the pirate era. So... now you've got the Elephant-island saying "Joyboy is back BABYYY" and Luffy grinning and looking like his head/hair is melting... which would connect him to Nika. And this threw wide the floodgates of wild speculation. Is Luffy Joyboy? Is Luffy Nika? Is he a reincarnation? is he possessed? did he inherit their will through his D. ? Are they linked through the Gomu Gomu no Mi fruit? My personal take is Joy Boy was that person's name but due to his achievements it became a title much like Pirate King is a title, not just any person. And whatever the elephant-island saw in the Joy Boy 800 years ago, he can now see in Luffy. Is it determination? rightousness? unyielding spirit? fighting spirit? Whatever it is, I'm betting its a character strong point, not the literal reincarnation (no matter how brief) of a past person(Joy Boy or Nika).

It was a surprise to me that Nika is actually not just another name of Joyboy's. Yeah, I think he was presented during Skypeia, someone also commented this. I checked some threads on reddit and one interesting comment was how Bink's Sake references drums in its lyrics and how the title's of ch. 999 and ch. 1000 are referencing it as well: The Sake I Brewed to Drink With You, Straw Hat Luffy (using here the official titles, I can't find the original thread with the fan translated titles [which fit better] right now).

I don't think it'll be that explicit.... since a lot of One piece is about passing the torch to a new generation and inherited will.
