I dont think its anything inherent to his flesh, Im pretty sure hes just similar to Big Mom in that hes basically a fucking monster, I mean try tried to hurt Big Mom and she was seemed nigh indestructible.

Its probably the same with Kaido, except his physical haki is likely better than Big Mom's.

The powerful in One Piece are almost a different species

Even it being Haki doesn't make sense to me. Haki is willpower and Kaido is actively looking to die. And I don't think it's his fruit either because the effects of his fruit would be negated completely through seawater. So seastone handcuffs and weapons or just the ocean would have made it possible to kill him, as would strong enough poison, electrocution, burning, suffocation or any other non-solid form of execution. Or even something like eating a second devil's fruit which for all we know kills non-Blackbeard people.

Haki would mean Kaido actively trying not to die which is the opposite of how he was introduced. And we have to assume he's survived things that go beyond Haki protection.

Even with Big Mom her crew was worried about the ocean, and we saw what happened to her when she did fall in - she would have died if she hadn't washed ashore.

I disagree Kaido's "immortality" is due to his dragon scales. His intro back in the day pretty much completely went against it. They tried to hang him, but the rope broke. They tried the guillotine, but the blade broke. They tried to impale him like Roger, but the spears broke. And this is all in a sequence where he jumps off of a Sky Island, in human form, and survives just fine. And through all of this sequence, it describes Kaido as someoe who is looking for a place to die, because presumably he hasn't found a way to die yet. If him being able to die was just "don't turn into a dragon so you don't get dragonscales", then he should definitely be dead by now.

Kaido definitely isn't human. He'll probably end up getting classified as an Oni or something. I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out hes the same race as Oars is. Although granted much smaller in size compared to Oars or Little Oars jr., hes still a horned giant.

His scales still exist when he's in human form, they're just not visible. He's a dragon man, just like Luff is a rubber man.

All of it makes sense if he's got impervious dragon scales. Keep in mind this is comic book logic, so if you have impervious skin then nothing can hurt you. Like this scene from Luke Cage for instance:

Notice the emphasis on "skin". Luffy's punching through steel but he can't punch through Kaido's skin. It's clearly illustrated that this is the issue with attacking Kaido. He's impervious.

big moms skin is pretty impervious too and she aint got no dragon fruit

Apparently Oden can go touring the towns to see if everything is all right, but in 5 years he never once checked if ships are being built? Or even checking how exactly is Kaido and his crew even manage to get to the island? Kaido even built a mansion, how can you not notice that? In the first place even with hostages, trusting the word of someone who got their position of power by deception and have openly stated their desire to ruin the country, strikes as ridiculously naive from someone who doubtless killed many as a pirate. And after being betrayed once, he trusts Kaido again with the boiling pot wager.

Where did he get that plank from?
