Wouldn't you still have to understand medicine in order to use the Op Op fruit? I mean, it doesn't do you much good if you have the ability to remove, say, a spleen from a body... but don't know what or where a spleen is.

I assume that you'd have to know the basics of human anatomy at the very least.
But I do think that you're right, unless the fruit somehow provides knowledge.

That's true if he wanted to be a surgeon, that said if he just wanted the fruit so he could, oh, i dont know, make a giant room within which he can pretty much control reality, it would probably be quite a good investment.

Except Corazon said the fruit requires a vast amount of medical knowledge to use effectively. It doesn't appear to be a fruit that just anyone could utilize.

You only need that medical knowledge to use the fruit to be a surgeon; and I since Burgess is going for luffy's fruit, I suspect that he only wants the fruit to be a fighter, so yeah, Burgess is an idiot.

Well it's not like Burgess is 80 years old... It would be difficult for someone with low intelligence but not impossible for them to at least study and learn enough to efficiently use the fruit.. I'd give 10+ years of studying medical knowledge to be able to use one of the most over powered fruits in existence.
Or Oda hinting at Gomu Gomu awakened super over powered or something. And BB some how knows this. Or Burgess is just an idiot.

With all this talk about Awakening and how much control Dofl has with his fruit, he kind of puts Crocodile to shame. Sure, Croc had some control, but compared to what we're seeing now he was at a pretty low tier of control. Kind of funny when Croc boasted so much about how he could control his fruit.

Burgess is a physical fighter, out of the Gomu Gomu, the Ito Ito and the Ope Ope fruits, Luffy's is the one best suited for that.
