How one can complain about the off screen suggested blow jobs is beyond me though.
Nothing wrong with a suggested blow job. I took issue with the sloppy gay blowjob because the scene could have stopped quite happily at the point where his head went below the belt. To then have to watch him pull a porn star getting sucked off face and have to listen to the extremely...accurate sound effects was quite awkward for me...don't know about anyone else.

Well I meant I wasn't going to reply to the specific point of his ad hominem. I didn't mean I wasn't going to poke a mild jab back at him!

Game of Thrones has a lot of unnecessary sex scenes, most definitely. It also has more violence than necessary. Both is part of what it gets it so many viewers, there's no denying that (Hey, it worked for True Blood, right?). And if that's what's necessary to have a show as awesome as this in the first place, I'll happily live with that.
|
Yeah, definitely, only the others watch it for the gratuitous violence and nudity. But you, you're smarter than that, you watch it for the awesome view of politics it contain or something. Obviously.

That was far closer to what I consider acceptable than the sloppy gay blowjob that lasted like 10 seconds I think in season 2 right? So yeah, as I said, seems like they are trying to be a bit more classy about it!! Actually the other thing my gf just mentioned is that it's kind of embarrassing to watch with other people around ie family, on a train, out and about in general. It just adds unnecessary awkwardness. And for all the people saying 'it's realistic to have sex in the show, we all have sex don't we?' that's a retarded argument. We all shit, do you want to spend 5 minutes an episode watching Jaime blast a particularly hefty dookie? Cultural differences really show in this thread. Me and my family give exactly 0 fucks about nudity or sex scenes. We'd rather watch people pleasuring each other then skulls getting crushed to bits and pieces + gore. I really enjoy the show because it is such a 'real' setting. Real stuff happens, envy, lust for power, violence, sex, all part of RL and portrayed superbly in this series. If you're shocked by a tit or 'suggested action' I think you're in for a real shocker when you grow up and venture into the real world. and yeah, as for the Swedish culture. I, as a child no older then 8, enjoyed a movie named 'dunderklumpen' I dont even remember the child nudity in there, I just enjoyed the movie as a kid. Im not scarred for life because of nudity If anything, as you've probably guessed, I'm more open and tolerant towards nudity. I'm going to ignore the ad hominem. I bet you think you're extremely sophisticated by showing how you are not at all bothered by such themes appearing in your show but in my opinion you're unsophisticated if you can't see the class in a show that is able to avoid blatant base nudity-for-the-sake-of-nudity. Seriously, watch I, Claudius. A million times richer and deeper than a show like Spartacus, covering exactly the same subject matter but doing it in a FAR classier and more subtle way. I agree with the people who say that some of the sex/ nudity scenes are acceptably plot-driven, but I think the majority are really just to attract the attention of a certain demographic, ie the male 18-34 target audience. Also, I think the general argument of 'lets be grown up about this' would probably fly a bit more if we saw penises rather than have many scenes where men are fully naked but conveniently their penises are hidden. The one-sidedness of the nudity 'deployment' undermines the arguments. Although I do accept there have been like two penises so far. Still though, quite a few times there has been a strategic existence of a bedsheet or a table or something that obscures the view. Although I don't know about the actual situation with HBO and the censors, have they not shown any vaginas because they specifically want to be a teenage road trip style movie or because the censors disallow such exposition?
And if you want to go through that argument watch "Rome" ... A MILLION time richer and more sophisticated than "I, Claudius" and yet it displays quite a few sex scene because it is just a major part of how and why decisions were made at that time.
Your reasoning would make sense if we were talking about shows taking place nowadays where the taboos around sex made it much more difficult to accept as important part of life. Back in the Antiquity, in Middle Age or even during the Renaissance, it was much more widely known how sexual affairs could impact political events and decisions. I'm not saying people were fucking in the streets but people accepted sex as a natural part of life much more easily.

So let me get this straight corumjhaelen: You don't like the show, I think I once saw you saying you didn't like the genre, but you're sticking around the thread just to troll viewers? Or maybe I'm just wrong?
You seemed like a pretty cool dude in the book thread, but I guess I was wrong lol.

it's not your criticism. it's the implication that people watching it are somehow less refined.

Rome was way way better than Spartacus, but no way was it more sophisticated than I Claudius. It is an example of the fact that you can't make a show as subtle and gripping as I Claudius nowadays without satisfying the lowest common denominator target market's desire for tits everywhere.
I repeat, I Claudius had just as much sex and violence as Rome or Spartacus, but it was implied. So much more rewarding in my opinion. But this is getting quite off topic, and it seems that more than a few people agree with me in that many of the sex scenes and the tits on show are NOT necessary to the advancement of the show. Just like the amount of times we are shown that the fat guy in the Crows is a coward who can't do shit is a little excessive, even if he is really fucking cowardly and the producers want to make sure we didn't miss that aspect of his personality. That doesn't stop GoT from basically being the best show on TV. It's only minor gripes tbh.

Most of my friends watch it, I've told them I think it's a dumb and bad show, sometimes we discussed it a bit, and well, apprently we're still friend. If I'm a bit annoyed about some of the fans of the show, it's because they seem to be persuaded that they're watching the smartest thing ever, and that sort of pretention is in my opinionso ingrained in the geek community that it's one of its worst pitfall (but I don't hate people because they're geek, remember, I'm posting on team liquid).
