I just assumed that the Iron Islanders burnt the city. Using it as a distraction to escape. I do not think the northern army would have made any deal with them. Especially considering the honor for the son leading the attack.

Well, Theon is an Iron Islander, so it makes sense that he just forgot to put out the fire and it burnt down Winterfell.

Can't wait for the next episode tomorrow night. So far the production in season 3 is living up to the hype.

I thought this interview with GRRM was rather good.

I debated with myself which thread to put this in. It presents itself early on as aimed at show watchers and readers alike and it never states a direct spoiler. It seems like it would be interesting to both so I decided it could go here for the broader spectrum of fans, BUT that does mean it comes with a couple warnings:

READ THIS:
There is some discussion of characters who are different in the books and the show around 56 minutes in. Specifically at 56:14-56:55 there are a couple of spoilers through inference.
59:41-59:43 has another spoiler through inference via the name he uses for a future event.

Finally the video, which is spoilered to force an extra action requirement to play it and encourage people to read the above for doing so:

Maybe I shouldn't know yet? lol

This question has intruiged me as well. We know it wasn't the iron-islenders who burned Winterfell, because they betrayed Theon, to "go home", which implies some sort of deal with the northern army (commanded by one of Robbs advisors sons, I belive?). You get Theon, we get to go free. Thus, if we assume this is the case, it would be completely retarded to set Winterfell on fire.

Which means the only remaining option is that the Northerners did it. Seems unreasonable, given that all we've been shown is how popular Robb is, and how devoted all his bannermen is to him, but the simple fact is nothing else is plausible, for me. It wouldn't be a very unexpected twist though. Perhaps there is some old rivalry between the Starks and another northern family, that we don't know about.

Edit: Hrm. I suppose it's possible that Theon's sisters army arrived to defeat the Northern force and re-take Winterfell. But they were far away, weren't they? And why burn it, then?

The ruins Robb "visits" in the middle of this episode aren't Winterfell.

It still stands. There was a slight misidentification earlier in which someone said that burned Winterfell was shown in s3e1, when that was actually Harrenhall. Burned Winterfell was shown in s2e10, and someone had to have burned it.

Maybe Theon just forgot to put out the fire in his fireplace when he left.

I suppose that could be a valid theory. You have to admit it kinda reeks though.

YES. There are some huge spoilers for you non-book readers! Frankly, I'm surprised he said what he said knowing there are a lot of normies who just watch the show there. Kinda funny that GRRM himself is spoiling and not some dude on YouTube

Actually, before Rob sent the men to Winterfell he said "Any ironborn who surrender will be allowed to return safely to their homes, with the exception of Theon Greyjoy."

But I don't think the iron islanders made a deal with the northmen or anything, because prior to them taking out Theon, there was a scene where the Maester told Theon that there are secret passages to escape Winterfell. The iron islanders may have burnt the city then escaped through the secret passages.

This episode wasn't boring , but there's wasn't much going on...

EDIT: Since they're doing the third book in 2 seasons(I believe?),it would make sense that the episodes aren't as loaded as in previous seasons.

Oh damn at the end of episode 2. Gotta admit though, I'm glad the northerners found them. Would be the shittiest trade ever if Brienne actually got Jaime to King's landing, and you know Tywin wasn't going to uphold the deal. He would just say "thanks for my son back, now you die".

I dont think a secret passage would still be obscured when like 100 burst out of it rapidly [fleeing fire and smoke]. Also the army outside would of [probably] started their assault if they heard cries of slaughter.
