It is not a sport where you stand around tapping sticks against each other. They wear leather armor for protection during fights, compare Kendo to Western fencing, which would be better described as a bunch of sissy men prancing around. This is completely inaccurate; shinai are made of hollow bamboo. A hit in the face (really, anywhere) stings like a bitch, but would be hard-pressed to do any actual damage; doubly so when you consider that kendo predominantly revolves around downward swings. So, please, next time you try to talk about kendo, do it to yourself because you are obviously clueless. Quick request to everyone complaining about the show, would you kindly shut up? GRRM wrote the books, and if he is completely happy with the way they have been brought to the screen, then what in Hades are you all going on about??

I have held a bokuto, and I would not want to get hit with that, it is an inch diameter thick of solid wood.

Although she's certainly more than a match for most of the male characters. + Show Spoiler + I'm re-reading AFFC currently and I think Brienne is far from the most skilled fighter. She actually makes makes her first kill in this book, and is quite insecure about doing it. Really no match for a seasoned fighter like Jaime or Ser Barristan. Quite possibly the best female fighter, but not the best overall. Anyways, my vote goes to Strong Belwas - even if he isn't truly the strongest, he does it with style.

Book 3 - + Show Spoiler + If we restrict this discussion to the current time period, I think that the books make it very clear that Jaime is at the top of the heap. Of course, there is an adjustment later.

He lets a guy cut him, then cuts off the guys head, throws it back at his friends, shits in their general direction, and wipes his ass with their champion's cloak. SO BADASS. Its a shame the guy is a Eunich... imagine how much better he'd be if he had balls? The Slavers said it themselves... the Eunichs will never have the strength of a westerosi knight.

Syrio also loses some fighting ability in book 1.

Book 3 - + Show Spoiler + My point is that it seems to me that GRRM's intentions were to paint Jaime as the most skilled swordsman alive, not just the best knight. Otherwise, why the "adjustment" in book 3? There's plenty of formidable fighters in the series. The Clegane duo, Belwas, Brienne, Ned , Barristan, the Dorthaki bodyguards, Bronn, Syrio, Khal Drogo, the Darkstar, Howland Reed, Victarion; you get the point. We can spend all day trying to come up with a list, but I think that it's pretty clear that GRRM considered Jaime the top dog.

I like your use of "adjustment".

For another, she's an American, and this production uses almost exclusively British actors. The only two Americans on the show are Peter Dinklage and Jason Momoa, who play roles that are extremely difficult to cast. Finally, Christina Hendricks refuses to do nudity, which the role of Melisandre requires. I can't deny that it's highly unlikely. The most likely cause of problems is indeed the fact that she is still on the casting list for Mad Men. It was just a sort of dream-cast if i was the supreme ruler of the universe and got to decide everything. I don't think there is even a 1% chance that she will end up getting the role. I just think both acting-ability-wise and looks she matches Melisandre perfectly, in my mind atleast. The actuall odds for her taking on the role are nihil, it's not just unlikely, it's simply not going to happen. It's just my ideal cast for the part, despite it probably never happening. Not that i will hold a grudge over something like that. The casting so far has been spot on for just about every part so i am sure they can find a great Melisandre. I don't even like the Melisandre character that much anyway. My favorite character in all the books is Davos Seaworth so i care more about his casting then any other in season 2. Sadly enough i also have to recognize that Davos could easily be written out of the story since the series doesn't work with PoV.

Who is to say that these characters appear in the same book? Noggin on your head, use it!

Davos is still alive and can thus not be removed as easily as imagined
