Spikes dont do much against the undead. Good luck making a ring of fire in the middle of a snow covered wasteland. Your going to need to use wood and that will be damp and useless for fires 99% of the time. So the Wildlings whole plan was to wait it out and hope the zombies didnt find them?

I dont think the wildlings really had a plan to be honest

Ehm their plan was to break castle black and then flee further south. Those at the camp where waiting for the army to send word no?

You get some wide shots of the defenses, there's a wooden palisade, a gate, and even some areas where archers can stand on the wooden wall for a firing platform, so its not bad. Also remember that most of the real wildling warriors were with Mance, and the people at Hardhome or w/e the name is are largely women, children, old/infirm, and whatever remaining warriors that were floating around. It's not like they had the engineering ability, time, soldiering thought, discipline, and resources to make some mega defenses
and the ones back at the camp were just waiting for the word that the castle had fallen, so it's not like they were just sitting there for no reason
It's also kinda clear that the Wildlings thought they would be under attack sometime in the near future, not like "oh shit here's the magical ice storm" sort of thing that happened out of the blue. theres a difference between knowing about a threat with the whole "winter is coming" shit and getting slapped in the face with an undead army

Generally speaking, the coldest places on earth are also the driest. So not really sure what makes you say the wood would be damp.
Anyway, I think the defences are what they should have been. Given their level of technology, it's on the level of what we'd expect.

June 7th isn't even a holiday? Why wouldn't it be this week

wildlings doesn't really have engineering knowledge and resources for that lol.. and yeah they probably didn't expect the attack is coming that soon.

also their tactic against white walkers is not to stand and fight, but to flee, so it makes sense that the place is lightly defended. It's not made to withstand attacks, it's made to delay them

Near the sea to be able to fish for food? Cliff to be kinda hidden and sheltered?
I agree that the location seems kinda odd for a camp that is waiting for word from the main army that the Wall has fallen.

This is the main army or rather its remnants that fled after being routed in Stannis' attack.

I have a question
White Walker respawn hability has any requirements?
Like, in an all out war that takes hours/days at the wall do they get an extra soldier whenever they kill a crow/wilding ? That seems terribly imbalanced
