I'm astonished noone has established a thread about this show?
After several recommendations, I started watching this show. I'm almost done with season 2 after a few weeks. I just can't stop watching..
Overall, this show is just impeccable. historical accuracy and actors r absolute top notch. By far the greatest TV show I've ever seen. It's a shame HBO can't fund it anymore because noone watched it and it was the biggest budget for a TV show/series of all time
A++

Good show, I saw both seasons, ambitious and authentic, but it's far from being historically accurate. It's an artistic interpretation and pulls some sharp compromises with recorded history.
Biggest achievement is in the show's deviation from shining and sparkle-y HollyRome, which is awesome. Everyone looks smelly lol

i downloaded the show during the Summer (pheer is a g) and I wathced the first 3 episodes loved it but no time lately zzzz

I just finished series 1 (I love a good boxed set ). I found it a refreshing change from other serialized dramas like Heroes and Lost. It seemed to really benefit from being 'written' 2000 years in advance, rather that on the fly, which is how I find some such dramas seem. How does series 2 compare?
What are the main deviations from history dragoon? How significant are they?

I found the first series a little bland but still entertaining. It was the second season that did it for me. Absolutely loved the second.

For example, the character of Atia of the Julii is based historically on the wife of her son Octavian and later Augustus Caesar.
Study a wiki for more deviations.

its owns, well worth watching. 2 thumbs up on my part ~

Very good show! I have also watched both seasons, like 6 months ago.
I think Atia of the Julii is fucking hot

I loved this show so much, finished it last year though. Gotta love how Lepodous(sp?) just kinda vanished when Antony and Octavian got into their conflict.

Hard to imagine this show didn't get a big audience. I downloaded all before it aired. The general audience has no sence of quality. I loved the rude but cunning Antionius.

The show didn't have a big following among people who payed for HBO. If you like an HBO show, first rule of thumb is:
Pay for HBO.
Second:
Watch the damn show when it comes on or on DVR (DVR results are recorded).
That's what my wife and I did. We were doing our part.

Best show ever, to b ad that they cancelled 3rd session.
As for good tv show that some of you may not hear of, Firefly is great.

Let's not talk about Firefly please, for these 2 reasons: 1. This is a thread about Rome 2. Firefly is awful
Back on topic, what you guys think of season 2 compared to the first? I prefered the political parts.. I don't see where they are going with Lucius Vorenus and his kids? I mean honestly noone gives a fuck about those girls and that little boy? Or Titus Pullo and his love story with the slave? ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ I want more of the senate, octavian, brutus, etc They should have introduced other great romans instead of shitty fictional ones
+ Show Spoiler +and the death of cicero sucked. he was by far the best character xD died with a bang tho, well executed--very moving D:
Anyone else think Marcus Antonius is miscast?

After listening to the marathon five and a half hour Hardcore History episode on the fall of the Roman Republic, I decided to rewatch this show from beginning to end. I had watched it back when it first came out, but I was in high school then and did not know much of the history past the famous names. I only vaguely remembered it as a pretty good show; upon the rewatch I love it even more! This show was actually an amazing gem and truly one of the greatest series ever made. I was really struck by how well planned out all the storylines were, and I loved how all the characters' arcs intersected at various junctions.
Those were a fantastic 22 hours with old friends Titus Pullo and Lucius Vorenus, with the charismatic genius Julius Caesar and his cold, calculating and even cleverer heir, Octavian. I enjoyed the savage underhanded war between the she-wolf women, relished the shady politics, delighted in the gang wars and pitched battles, celebrated the triumphs along with the characters, and was absolutely captivated by the war room strategy discussions.
If you haven't watched this show before, and you are interested in the ancient period; in fact, if you enjoy any show of high calibre, with excellent writing, great acting and memorable characters, I cannot heartily enough recommend you watch Rome!

You're a brave man for bumping a four year old thread. And it was a ...
Good decision. Rome fucking rocked socks. That was a great show. Thank you for the podcast link. I haven't heard Hardcore History but I'll check it out!
Edit: Wow it's been four years since 2007 herpty derpty.

Amazing show, only rivaled in awesomeness by the First Band of Brothers and a game of thrones. Even the Wire i feel has nothing on Rome but that is a personal opinion. If i could get one american TV channel over here in Norway it would def be HBO.
|
Too bad they went from 5 seasons to 2 and the second half of the second season was more rushed than recent Activision games...
Still amazing show, really a bummer it went like that for the show.
|
Kind of ironic seeing this thread as I just bought the Season 1 DVD. I wish Bruno Heller would do another series but this time in Egypt perhaps during the New Kingdom plenty of drama and storyline could be covered.
But I figure he is busy working on the Rome film =/
